Vehicles, fast travel, and all things that go wiz in space

SoldarithSoldarith Member Posts: 184

I've been watching a good number of TR videos for a while now and have not seen any player characters traveling via any method except their own two feet. So this got me to thinking about some developer interviews and how they have said each of the planetscapes are vast and filled with exciting things to do and see. Putting these two together I came to a somewhat disappointing possibility that characters may very well have to run through these vast landscapes. So here are my questions and assumptions, so far:

1.) I've read that there will be multiple worlds in which players can visit and interact with - There must be some sort of inter-planetary transportation system that allows this (via space flight or some super powerful Logos travel system - perhaps wormholes).

2.) Has anyone found information that talks about player-owned mounts/vehicles that allow characters to travel faster than run speed? Perhaps a "basic-level" Logos that alters the run speed of a character by 100% or something?

3.) Has anyone found information that talks about a planetary transportation system that allows for fast travel to/from locations on the planet surface? I keep seeing these Bane dropships and would think that the concept (ported to player use) would make an excellent source of a planet transportation system.

4.) Has anyone found information that talks about a "return home" ability a'la "recall" and "hearthstone" (using other MMO terms here) type items or abilities that allow players to return to their bound location? I just dread the thought of having been out exploring deep into a planet's terrain, only to find that I've run out-of-ammo and need a resupply NPC - and the nearest one is the base I left 3 hours ago - and I will need to hump it back to the base via my own two feet.

Odds are it will probably be something along the lines of the hypgriffs(sp) and whatnot of WoW... give or take. You find yourself a shuttle NPC, pay them a certain amount (or just ask for a ride) and are game-loaded onto the next planet's safe-zone. But the story will revolve around something like you suggested with wormholes space-ships and laser beams.

2.) Has anyone found information that talks about player-owned mounts/vehicles that allow characters to travel faster than run speed? Perhaps a "basic-level" Logos that alters the run speed of a character by 100% or something?
I vaguely remember something like this... but it could have been forum-born. I'm sorry i can't provide anything further than that.

Considering most major-storyline and missions will be instanced, odds are you'll be hoofing it around alot more than you think... but starting instances or calling in for reinforcements could resort to being dropped off in some sort of drop-ship as a sort of GW-like intro-sequence..
4.) I've heard nothing of the sort, regardling a 'Hearthstone" or "Recall" ability to return to a bound location. But there is always the possibility.

I'm sorry i can't be any clearer than that. If anyone knows more, feel free to correct me of course.. but thats all i've figured out.. but i'm not in beta either.. and a friend of mine is.. but because of work schedules i have not talked to him in a few days.. and don't even know if his statement of getting into the TR beta is actuality or just a lie.. as i have yet to see him play it.

In terms of your questions regarding surface transportation, as I understand it, there are waypoint beacons that can be travelled to as long as the facilities they are in are under human control.

So, you visit the portal/teleporter/waypoint beacon once, then it is stored as a possible destination for other times when you're travelling using the beacon system.  They are located in contested bases which can be captured and lost.

To the best of my recollection this was gone over in the GDC (Game Developers' Conference?) TR footage which you should be able to dig up in earlier posts.  Its a good clip, lasts about 10-15 minutes of continuous play and commentary.

I don't remember anything about interplanetary transportation though.  I'm assuming some sort of zoning menu or something.

    1) It's a simple "zone here" system right now.
Usable by everyone. Wormhole I believe it's said to be?

    2) Nothing. There's "sprint" which isn't logos-based

    3) None.

    4) None.

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

    Yes right.

1 There are worm holes from planet to planet

2 I heard that the AFS mech will be useable in later patch's(not sure if that is true or not)

3 There are at ever base i have been too a dropship pad so these maybe drop you in middle of a battle like the bane. Other then there are only yeleports to go from base to base atm.

4 A recall of some sort i have not read about yes, And about sprint its in the game right now but you need adrenaline.

    Playing: Everthing
    Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.

Sorry on the 3, it's correct, there's a port in every base.

If I've read CuppaJo's comments correctly, it sounds like the teleporters are very similar to Guild Wars' "map travel" in that once you visit a town you can simply click it to travel there instantly. The catch is that in TR the base must be under AFS control; if the Bane are controlling it you can't go.

Good information! Thank each one of you very much. If anyone else can provide fill-in details, feel free!

NPC Mechs are in game. Vehicles wont be in game at release. But there is talk they will be added later.

1.) The game will ship with 2 planets - Foreas and Arieki. There is a screenshot of a wormhole so I guess thats how you travel between planets. So sort of a Stargate type thing.

     - The game will be shipping with two planets with a promice of more to be added later on. There are several screenshoted areas with spaceport structures with shuttles. So this should be typical interstellar transportation
2.) Has anyone found information that talks about player-owned mounts/vehicles that allow characters to travel faster than run speed? Perhaps a "basic-level" Logos that alters the run speed of a character by 100% or something?
     - Several intervies mention that player-owned vehicles/mounts wouln't make it into the initial release. Apperantly there wouln't be any time to be developed and tested. But they are intended for a later patch. Still undecided wherther you can use them in PvP though.
    - Reqruit class also starts with sprint ability. But this would be more in terms of combat manuver than transportation. Some classes also have recall ability to summon ppl to their location.
3.) Has anyone found information that talks about a planetary transportation system that allows for fast travel to/from locations on the planet surface?      - I remember a screeenshot of a vortex structure, some kind of a portal. This is one type of transportation. An intervie also mentioned that when you enter a new town/base you can visit the shuttle station and use drop ships to travel to already visited camps.
4.)      - No info here. Can only hope they add something like this or it will be mass spam in global: WTB Summon/Portal to Org

Correct yes .. travel will be accomplished via wormhole (fancy word for clicky zoning).. at least at Launch.
2.) Has anyone found information that talks about player-owned mounts/vehicles that allow characters to travel faster than run speed? Perhaps a "basic-level" Logos that alters the run speed of a character by 100% or something?
They said in an interview they do have plans for a wide range of vehicles in the future ..but they don't want the game to be a Planetside or BF style game where infantry are rendered all but obsolete by vehicles and serve as little more then roadkill, so they are working on balancing them and want to take more time then would be feasible to have at launch .. they definatly will be some day ..but not when the game goes gold. I wonder if there will be a power that gives you a speed boost of some sort?

It has something to do with the planetary control system .. as you take new bases both from the bane and other players ..you will be able to transport to them I think via some kinda teleporters. I don't know if there will be player usable drop ships or not ..but would be cool. At least that was my understanding of things.
4.) One can only hope but no mention of it in any of the interviews I watched.
