The 7/5 vanguard update changes everything!

eccotoneccoton Member UncommonPosts: 1,340

I played Vanguard 2 days in beta and a few days when it went live. I hated it. I could not even give the game a chance since the performances was so bad. Low frame rates and many crashes. Account cancelled! I read on Thurs. that Vanguard under went an update and some performance issues were addressed. So against my better judgement I resubscribed and loaded up Vanguard. The 7/5 patch changes everything! I do not mean game play has changed. I mean it changes all the reviews and comments on Vanguard's performance. What ever SOE did to optimize performance worked!!!!

I can acually play the game now. I have settings mostly set higher then balanced and game looks fantastic. So far even in a city I get over 25+ fps out in the wild I get well over 40+ fps. Not a single crash since patch. SOE still has more performance twiks coming too. Any comment about Vanguard's performance before 7/5 mean nothing. That is what I mean by changes everything. I have only played 6 hours since patch and I have not logged into eq2 or LOTRO since the patch. I am having a great time in Vanguard. I can not believe it after my beta experience and all the negative posts. I can not comment on endgame or what happens after level 30 but I can say I am having a great time now. I am now prepared to give Vanguard a new look and a real chance. That is something many could not do but I say give it another try you maybe as suprised as I am. SOE now has a game to build on that is playable.

actully the game has improved alot now i also enjoy it so much and i like sitting on the hills and looking at the scenery it is awsum and the servers are finaly picking up. i got a feeling this time next yr it will be where everquest 2 is right now and that game is very populer.:)

I have heard different posters claim that the low FPS issues are gone, while other claim its still there. It seems that it still depends if Vanguard likes your computer or not. I'm not going to spend 15$ to check, I'm going to need a trial.

Ummm did you read the post? VANboi lmao. I have played 6 hours, stated how I hated the game, not exactly the credentials of a fanboi. Have you read any of my other posts? If any thing I am an EQ2 fanboi. This is my first post on Vanguard and you call me a VANboi? I had nothing for or against the game. Just letting people know the update indeed addresses a lot of performance issues.

Horusra your comment is a thinly vailed insult to charlepayne and a dig at Vanguard. This post was just trying to point out SOE has fixed performance a lot, from a player who did not even like the game. I teach art and am a showing artist. These games have some fantastic art in them. Vanguard has it's share too. So for some it is entertaining to just look at the talent of the artists. It is much the same as appreciating a good painting at a museum.  Something I talk about to my art appreciation students.

Is there any understanding of the overall direction SOE wants to take with the game.  IE...less hard core....change exp curve....crafting changes.....etc etc ?

    Yes the game looks nice.
No, the patch doesn't fix everything.
It helps, and is a start, but I'd wait
6 or more months to make any judgment.
    Server populations are declining, 3/4
of my guild has quit. The remaining ones
are actually waiting for a patch that
    does indeed "change everything"

I picked up VG on a whim on 7/3 though I told myself I'd wait until after the server merges to get the game, if I ever got it at all. But I already have a Station Pass, and VG was in the bargain bin so what the hell... Fraps was giving me 30-40fps in the wilderness, after the 7/5 patch I'm averaging 35-50. I'm still in the noob area obviously so I haven't seen any cities. SOE is apparently still working on the game, I just plan on logging in a couple hours every few weeks for now, although I'll say that VG *appears* less jerky than EQ2, though nowhere near as smoothly as 60+ fps in LOTRO with every setting maxed.

For me, Brad himself was the reason I never got into the VG hype machine. Now that he's out of the picture for the most part, I'm more interested in what the team has in mind.

I played VG in beta and live for several months to play a ranger. I love ranged combat . VG's concept of a ranger is one of being a mele type that pulls with a bow but kills through mele. For me....that not  acceptable. SOE has not changed the rangers mele focus as far as I can see. It would have been quite easy for VG to allow players to choose a mele or archery path for rangers.....and they chose to not allow that to happen.

Sooo...bug fixing and optomizing doesn't do it for me.

I played a Ranger for a while and their bow skills were quite good.  If you could kill the mob from range without it ever hitting you solo it wouldn't require much skill.  your bow does enough damage that you can use it in group and do comparable damage to melee IMO.

  • ArawonArawon Member Posts: 1,108

Guess it depends on your view of what a ranger should be. Mine is that they are/should be archers...killers from range in the same way casters are. Yes they can and should mele...but  in  solo gaming a sword should just finish off the odd creature that excapes death by bow.VG had a chance to offer players a path leading to either a mele oriented ranger or an archery oriented ranger and chose not to offer players that choice.I wish they had.I might still be playing.

From what I experienced casters had to eventually get in melee range too other then the Druid (chain snare), the Psion(snare with cooldown), and the Necromancer(pet).

It was probably a balencening decision.  Considering they are good at both bow/meelee, can heal, and can take hits pretty well they can't deal damage like a clothie from range.  Their bow does a lot of damage though IMO.  There are lots of abilities to use with the bow.  Usually you can have a mob near half dead by the time it gets to you.  If you want to kill if from range you can snare it and run/shoot.

  • ArawonArawon Member Posts: 1,108

In fact thats what I did...I started a druid and he ended up as my primary character because I could snare :-). I pushed hard on wood crafting as well but could never make a bow with the levels I reached. Any know if they have made any substantial changes to crafting to make it more crafter friendly....and can detail any of the positive changes..if any ?

lol i only just got that, im so stupid and im laughing my head off for some reason

anyway on topic, everyone that says SOE should change gameplay and so on, also whats the point of fixing gameplay before performance issues when you cant play? You need to give them time and a chance, VG got off to a really bad start and is still being fixed up by SOE which will take time so be patient.

Exactly.  The game was so borked on release, and has performed so poorly since then, I need to see it for myself.  I'd love to play Vanguard, but I'm not going to shell out my money on a game that may or may not not work.

Because people will play through lag if the game is realy good

I had to have EQ1 on lowest settings for the first year because my 400mhz celeron couldnt handle long clip range and spell graphics.

Still loved every laggy minute of it.

VG is crap though, a giant graphical chat room...with less and less people every day to chat with.

I am all with you here. I love my EQ2 Rnager, who is really a ranged fighter in the sense of the word. The VG ranger is a good class, just he is no Ranger IMO.

I didnt leave VG for bugs or tech probs at all, and I guess A LOT of players who left had MANY other reasons to quit, like the overall boredom and sterile world. Much work to do.

You know, I never understood why people think that "wait 6 months to judge" makes sense, if the game needs 6 more months then I have a judgement right now: its unfinished crap...

Sure maybe they've made the game "playable" in the fps sense, but its still not playable in the "nothing to do after lvl 35", broken/missing crafting/quests/etc

Traditionally a Ranger is not a ranged fighter, they are woodsmen who “Range” far and wide in their defense of the frontiers.

The first fantasy “Ranger” was Aragorn in Lord of the Rings and he fought primarily with a sword. The ranged fighter in LoTR was Legolas, who was certainly not a ranger in LoTR lore.

D&D followed up on this them by making them a fighter with some spells tracking and stealth abilities. They could wear the same armor as any other fighter but were encouraged to use slightly lighter stuff. Later on D&D added the option for them to specialize in either 2h fighting or bows.
