When I was in closed Beta I just accepted the crappy shoulder armor and thought for sure It would get better. Come retail the shoulder armor still sucked, and people in beta said its because the "high res textures" weren't out in beta yet and that they would make the shoulder armor stick out and not look like two pancakes on someones shoulders. This was not the deciding factor that made me quit lotro but man the armor could have been done SO much better in this game, particularly shoulder.

I have also noticed the shoulder armor to be a little lacking. I was thinking though; would it be possible for a user-made skin to be applied in game or is all of the armor rendering done through the servers or something to that extent?

Even though I primarily play a Heavy Armor wearing class, I do carry around a Light Armor shoulder pad. It is the one that looks like a scarf wrapped around your shoulders and neck. I just have it for looks, obviously, as it goes well with the cape. The shoulder armor doesn't really bother me that much though. I thought the capes were much worse, until they introduced crafted ones.
see i didnt think the capes were that bad, it was the shoulder armor that killed me. some pieces really did look like you took two pancakes and glued them to your shoulders.
