I played DAoC from its launch up until ToA and then quit. I've been thinking about coming back to play the Minotaur, but was never real big into the RvR. Are there still any guilds on any server that are friendly to the more casual player that doesn't have the time to dedicate to hardcore RvR? And is the PvE even worth concentrating on at this point? Any info would be appreciated before I shell out the money for the 5 anniversary pack and start over from scratch.

While there is PvE in DAOC and it has certainly improved a lot since ToA, I wouldn't recommend it. I am the exact same person as you sound to be. I was more interested in DAoC's PvE than their RvR when I started playing in 2002. I've played the game on and off since then until this past January. The reason why I won't go back is because of the degradation of the community. While it is possible to find a mature guild in this game that is also casual friendly, the majority of players are interested in powerleveling to 50, getting champion levels, and then PvPing non-stop. The bickering is also unbearable when it comes to this class/spec being better or overpowered than this class/spec.
I would recommend playing EQ2 or WoW. Both are geared towards PvE, both have plenty of mature casual guilds to join, and both offer a variety of gameplay choices. I am playing WoW, because I like the Battlegrounds better than the way EQ2 does PvP and because EQ2 has too many zones. I really do think that WoW quests are boring and mundane and would rather grind in DAoC in a group like old times, but you will see that those times are gone and so is that community. If that community returned, I would go back to DAoC without looking back.
You could try the trial to be sure it is something you want to invest in.

What you just said is what I was afraid of. I played WoW since it's launch till a few months before BC, and quit it because every guild I joined either booted me out because I didn't play enough or was so immature I couldn't take it. If you WoW guild is open to players like myself who can dedicate a handful of hours a week to playing and don't expect every member to go PvP crazy, let me know and maybe I'll hop back on WoW and look you all up. Thx for the info.
And people wonder why DAOC has such a low population . . .
Are there tons of people running around doing PvE all the time? No. Are there people doing PvE - very much so. For example, over the weekend I was doing some crafting on a mentalist and people were wanting help on a ToA encounter. I kept telling them I was busy but eventually gave in and helped them out with a couple of encounters. I was on my animist and people needed help doing a ML raid and since I needed MLXP I went and helped them.
There were groups always forming for dragon raids while I was on. There were a couple of epic zone farming groups there were out there. Hell one dragon raid was going on at 5 am eastern time!
Here is the deal and one of the big reasons why I do not recomend "classic" servers anymore. Because of the lack of ToA, that because the RvR servers and so you will find people there that want to avoid PvE more than the regular servers. There are more people around at the begining levels and you are more likely to group with them, on the other hand, as you get max level everything is about RvR for most players.
The game is far more solo and group friendly now. It is also directed as the casual player. So here is the deal. Servers are now in clusters - that is to say that all of the zones except for housing are shared. If you play a regular server at peak times it is like being what would have been a low pop server the last time you played say a population between 1200-1800. In addition:
1. ToA has been nerfed. Everything is able to be done by a full group or less.
2. There are Champion Levels that you can earn by doing CL quests starting at level 30. Most can be solo/duo but a few require a full group.
3. There are the Camelot Campaigns. Essentially instead of an expansion everyear they are going to have storylines that run 3-4 months with content added every 1-2 weeks. Zones are being remodeled, new items items, new quests are also added. Currently most things are focused on the upper level (it does involve dragons in the Epic Zone) but there are many that are still lower level.
4. New chat tools - there is a looking for group channel, a for sale channel, and a general chat channel.
5. The leveling time is very quick and basically any class, if needed, can solo to 50 in a short amount of play time - far less than in WoW.
6. Many guilds are just happy to have warm bodies. More people in a guild means more people to talk to. It also means (espically on a regular server) that even if a member is not going to RvR, you can have help getting the PvE you want to do done.
I do not know if DAOC is a game for you, but I will say that if you miss it, you should give it another shot. It is better to try things out than to trust a lone poster who may not even be a current player.
Thanks for your input too. As of yesterday, that was the only reply I had on here so I went with it. I'm still thinking about giving the game another whirl. Thanks again for an opinion.
Opinion below:
Classic servers have become the RvR centric servers of the game, everyone rushes to 49 or 50 and RvRs, either in frontiers or the last BG (cathal valley- level 45-49). PvE is very hard to get accomplished when your whole guild is busy RvRing every night. Once you get to 50, people complete their Champ quests up to getting their epic weapon and then move on to RvR. Also note that equipping an alt is as simple as a few items and some crafted gear on classic. Get to 50 and within 24 hours you are sufficiently templated to compete in RvR.
ToA servers have become PvE centric due to the nature of how much needs to be levelled. Yes everything is easier now, but you still need level 50, still need Master Level exp, artifact xp, and champion level experience. Therefore, everyone is in a constant state of levelling. Every alt you make that goes above 35 needs to get it's artifacts and master levels, etc. Lots of Pve. Plus, by the time you get to level 50, ML 10, CL 10, and all artifacts levelled up, you are tired of that toon and move on to another and the process begins again.
I just wanted to follow-up on this thread real quick.
My point of view that I shared with you came from a person that played on the Classic servers on and off peak times. What the other poster said about the Classic servers is true. People do rush to 50, get their Champion Levels and weapons and only RvR after that. Keep in mind that a lot of people roll on the Classic servers in order to be able to have a greater chance of grouping at lower levels. Now, I haven't played on the Normal servers since the Classic servers were introduced a couple years back, so I can't say anything about those servers. However, I did hear of people trying out the normal servers and it being a ghost town between levels 1-20. Different people were able to find guilds and get powerleveled from 1-20 as well. So, it really depends on the community and time of day I guess.
Anyways, if you are still interested in playing WoW or if you do try DAoC and decide not to sub/re-sub, you can give the guild I am in a shot. It sounds like you would be a perfect fit for us. I will leave the link to our website below. At the very least, I would recommend trying the 14 Day free trial on DAoC on whichever server these guys are saying you will have a good experience on. Best of luck to you.
