I may have missed it somewhere but I don't remember him saying he was specifically talking about server lag. He just said lag due to high poly models and such. And he makes a good point on that.
What good are the greatest graphics in the world if it becomes unplayable in normal everyday game playing (pvp battles)? Its unclear at this time how much the system can currently handle, and how much it will be improved by release. BUT again - if the everyday common person can't use it, its like the feature does not even exist.
If you are going to require a high level of hardware to enjoy the game.. that is going to have a drastic impact on subscriptions. Personally, I have an 8800gtx so Im not worried about myself, but its unreasonable to expect all of my friends to have the same.

It's not just the card either, you'll need a very good processor too.
I expect both graphical and server lag actualy, I believe the combat system (if it actualy goes in) will overtax servers when there are large battles.
I mean, even in DAoC -a couple years after launch- there were still occurances of rvr zones crashing because of too many turret pets being put up in one spot.

And its not just the models that are an issue. The visual character customization that AoC has will also be very taxing on the system.
I've seen the demo of the character creation (as most have). All of that customization does not come without a tradeoff. Every visual tweak to your character has to be communicated across the server and to every client so that it displays properly. Whereas other games have to worry about a comparitevely limited number of visual templates to choose from, AoC will need to worry about millions of combinations (every slider is going to impact how long it takes to provide information on your character to others). In addition to of course the equipment your wearing. And thats just a single character!
No.. I do not think people yet see what a problem this will be. But they will...
THIS IS NOT WoW. Yes the majority of people who play this game will NOT be able to play maxed out w/ full AA and AF with 40+fps @ 1600x1200 or greater.
WoW set themselves a low bar with regards to many aspects of but more particular to this topic the graphics. Simply to make as much money as they could by allowing the most people to play it.
using low poly models, little to no shaders rendered in a revamped 5yr old engine (at the time of launch 2004) of course there was going to be little if any client side "lag". AoC will not attempt this. And I applaude them for doing so. WoW did nothing new it brought nothing to the genre (except lots of new money and potential customers). AoC is clearly not trying to topple WoW as evident by their "M" rating they couldnt even if they tried. AoC is and will be a niche game. That said they have allowed themselves to not only try out new ideas and concepts but also push the envelope with regards to graphics aswell.
Well, a lot has been said thus I won't repeat it. Instead I'll call my expectation 'fun'. I hope that I'll return to this thread pleased that I bought it. I hope that I'll hardly want to spend my time posting here because I'm so immersed in the game. I hope I finally find a game after these long years which truely addicts me like the sp games I played in the 90's. I hope it lives up to my expectations. I hope...
Well I dont like making alot of predictions...but.
I have high hopes for AoC, I dont think it will topple the likes of WoW. WoW, I figure, will be whittled away down in playerbase like any MMO with other games coming out, and AoC will be one of those games to put the first dent in it. But realistically, AoC will probably turn out to be a niche game, but a very respected and a very good niche game. I cant see AoC pulling in more than a million subs in the first year.
But it will be a good game. It offers something different that other games dont, not even WoWhammer offers anything really new.
My number one fear is that they're trying to do too much, and they'll do everything "ok" but not "great."
My number two fear is that the animations will look how they do lately when the game is released and Funcom will spend too much time defending the animations, and no time tweaking and changing them.
Number 3 would be that the combat system could get boring rather quickly, but I'll have to read reviews before I can have any real opinion on that.

Kind of late on reviving this. But it's a good time to. I feel like we know don't know as much as we should in almost a years time. Sure, a few updates came out. . .but basically what we knew is all that we seem to know. How is this game turning out for most of you? The october 30th release date has been pushed back, of course, let me know how you feel.
Some of the animations seem to have been lifted since we late met here. . .also the figures look great. Female and male, they look really realistic and move nicely.

What I feel about the state of age of conan I put into this thread two days ago:
Unfortunately it turned into a flamefest for the fanboys who didn't appreciate I spoke my mind. Quite literally you aren't allowed to speak your mind. Of course the padlock police charges in and locked it up.
Anyways long story short: game will be delayed and it will be announced no later than January... also for a game that uses the word "innovative" a lot I have a harder and harder time seeing what is so innovative about it. Instances instances instances. Raids, capture the flag and the "talent" system all seem to derive straigth out of wow. Not to mention standard escort, kill x mob and deliver missions.

Actually your thread Draccan was locked because it went 12 pages of people giving you the answers and links to the questions you had. Even Pharamond took time out and made a post clarifying things in PLAIN English for you. Athelan here on these forums gave you answers.
If I was in your guild I would be thinking WTF are you doing here. Your the type of person who wants every question answered and if you dont get an answer you scream like a baby dropping candy out of a baby buggy. You can't accept the answers because you already had formulated an opinion that was negative on the game and held onto that opinion / train of thought, if only you would open your mind and actually hear what is being told to you.
Its really simple, if you don't like it, express an opinion. You have done that now and got the best answers to your questions you will get. What more? tough luck mate. Can't handle that? then move on and wait till you play the game yourself.
Otherwise, seriously the Whining is becoming tiresome.
gamona:A lot of our readers are concerned that you may not be able fix the problems in time. Will the current release – March 25th 2008 - date be the definite time of shipping? Is it set in stone?
Erling Ellingsen: We are very much on track for the March 25th release, and that’s what we are working towards. We’re really looking forward to bringing you all into the game!
gamona: The MMO community out there is a bit like WoW tired…of course we are setting all our hopes in Age of Conan! But what if you are not be able to handle most above mentioned problems in time: Will you release the game anyway? Any chance for an first day patch?
Erling Ellingsen: We have delayed the game several times now, and it has always been because we wanted to work more on it. Funcom is one hundred percent dedicated to quality – we’re gamers by heart and we live and breathe Age of Conan – so we want to make it ready before it goes out.
But the beauty of massive online games is really that we can continue to update it once the retail box hit the shelves. The game disc itself goes into production quite a few weeks before the game servers goes live, so there will be a lot of work being done on the game in those precious weeks. So yeah, there will most likely be a lunch day patch.
This is really something most massive online games do. It’s a luxury that we have. When you make a single-player game you can’t expect people to patch it when it goes live. This gives us a few extra weeks of work from we deliver the gold disc to players start pouring in.

Agreed.
Draccan, you're just too waded in your own bullshit to believe anything else. The thread was very likely locked because it was becoming repetitive and tiresome. Actually, let me rephrase that: too tiresome because of your own repitition; everything else was fine.
You need to remove the blinkers from your head and get a wider view of the field, because if you truly believe that Age of Conan is not going to be all it's cracked up to be, then you might as well find yourself another game to play - I hear Darkfall is coming along.
P.S. If I was a mod, I would have locked the thread too. Honestly, they do a pretty good job on those forums.
"We are very much on track for the March 25th release, and that’s what we are working towards. We’re really looking forward to bringing you all into the game! "
The same exact thing was said about October 30th.
I mostly agree with Draccan, except for the fact that AoC has finally started some marketing. I've been seeing a lot of banner ads, which gives me hope things that March 25th may be real.
The August delay was easy to call: there was only a very limited beta and there was no marketing.

Whining? Why is it you see the fact I took the time and wrote a long list of thoughts and worries about the game in a thread like it is whining?
I state my opinions as I see them. I have also stated in the same thread further down all the positives about the game. I just have a critical look at things like capture the flags, raids, instances etc. I don't see those aspects as innovative.
Obviously you are the one whining. You just hide behind your fanboyism. You didn't discuss my points at all but just started your personal attacks. And your attitude just ensures I most certainly will continue posting even more.
Don't give me this "98% of the community". Many more people than that believe the info is lacking on the game and that it will be delayed or are worried about capture the flag crap or the amount of instances and raids (and all the many other things I wrote about). Just look at the thread.
Unfortunately you Wexxx and Acidbaron always charges into any critical thread and start spewing your personal attacks dude.
I think the game so far will be a great and most creative addition to the MMO genre. It will bring new comers and burn outers, like myself, back into the swing of things. My fears are:
1. Will combat seems fun( not the fatatlities, cause we know those will be fun)
2. Will the quests and storylines be well written, and make you feel like your in a good story?
3. Will pvp be a big benny hill run around fest? ive seen alot of pvp videos where people are just running around hitting eachother. That looks lame.
4. Will there be tons of things and places to explore
5. Will there be some good chance to Rp? I love RP as much as PVP!
DOOOOMM DOOOOOM!!!! the sky oh my the SKY!!!!! IT IS FALLING AHHHHHHHH!!!
hehe
Oh well always nice to have such people around good laugh now and then gets a bit annoying when they are to persistant but for the rest i'll pretty much ignore him, drama & attention whoring is a pretty sad hobby.
Well, time to bring this baby alive once more. When I started this thread February of 2007 we all were expecting a game in October. Now over a year since this thread was started and we are only weeks away from AoC. So how is everyone feeling so far? This game going to deliver? Was it able to keep your interest since October 30th push back? Still have questions that have not been answered?
Crazy to think it's been a year since I made this thread, seems like yesterday.

I was not even alive (according to the history of AoC when you started the post) so I am unsure what I could add but coming into the game in March and seeing it, I was originally skeptical but as it gets closer and closer to release, I feel it will meet my expectations. I am sure there is going to be things that I wished was in it (like the Lich R.I.P) but hey...
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

The 25th of March is at least plausible.

6. will mounted combat be fun but hard to master?
7. Will it be fun to build yoru cities.
draccan is whining here aswell?
Total time played: 9125 Days, 21 Hours, 29 Minutes, 27 Seconds
Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds
I was not even alive (according to the history of AoC when you started the post) so I am unsure what I could add but coming into the game in March and seeing it, I was originally skeptical but as it gets closer and closer to release, I feel it will meet my expectations. I am sure there is going to be things that I wished was in it (like the Lich R.I.P) but hey...
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
Thats a lot of mammoth dookie to trudge through for those on foot
FUNCOM - putting the FUN in disFUNctional !
