Anything besides combat?

So is anyone looking forward to this game for any other reason besides the combat because from watching many of the videos on youtube, I fail too see anything that catches my attention. One thing I noticed that was completely overdone and just downright disgusting was the amount of blood gushing from the characters. Wow, when they say blood they really mean it... This new combat everyone talks about does not look as good as everyone hypes it up to be. Looks sloppy and boring. I understand its still in beta but by now you would expect alot more then what has been shown. I dunno maybe i'm missing something, so if anyone out there knows what it is pls tell me because I'm pretty lost.

    Um...is that suppose to be fun...cuz like...no...

  • raoulraoul Member Posts: 88

I agree.  I really hope people aren't hyping it off just the combat and gore because I think they'll be disappointed a bit.  I've seen a couple videos and I was definitely surprised at the combat, didn't look too appealing at all.  But maybe I'm missing something, maybe I'll have to play it to know how fun it is...

Oh, there is player controlled cities and stuff like that... but that isn't too special.

We only have words to go by atm so well have to see once it comes out. But if you read along here are somethings im waiting for:

    -yes the combat

    -mounted combat

    -siege warfare

    -formations

    -classes which seem very unique

    -interesting prestige proffesions

    -city building

-their word that the game wont be a major grind

As far as people saying thats its 80 lvs and another 20 pvp lvs im not concerned. Numbers are just that: numbers. Max lv could be 10 and yet be incredibly hard to reach. So by that alone im not stressing things out. Claiming that you have to pve to pvp, again something im not worried about since i can simply pvp to get better pvp gear. That alone makes it different that other games ive played. I like the aspect of siegeing cities with catapults and other siege weapons. I like the idea of building a city in the 1st place. Theres also the good lore that dig into if thats your thing. Im sure it wont please everyone, but well see once it comes out then we can truly judge. For now all you can do is take their word.

    Got anything constructive to say?

funny how you know that you use the word "grind" 3 times and you haven't even played the game.....

Does putting on a different pair of shoes make combat THAT much more interesting???

How about I say "Formation mounted combat" - thats new and innovative. Provides a different tactical approach to laying seige or defending a battlekeep for instance.

Its not a matter of trusting everything the devs tell us. Its a matter that the game hasnt released so we dont knwo how itl really be. If i dont take the devs word then whos will i take? Yours? because tbh its not any better (no offense, but you should get the idea). Either way i wont be pissed if AoC doesnt deliver, its just a game. If it turns out to suck ill simply play something else, and if its awesome ill be there with everyone else having a blast. Just wait till it comes and out then we can all see for ourselves. All this speculation is useles since none of us are devs in this game.

The game seems to be in good shape atm (from what i see in vids and regular site updates) and i like what i see. When i get my hands on it ill take things at face value and then ill decide if its for me or not.

You don't make 80 levels in a game unless it's to slow people down.

But I know, I know, AoC will be different...because it's the bestest, best, bester game evAr! Right?

Oh this is an "MMORPG" you see typically in "MMORPG's" characters have lvls..... But you just presume that in this game its a grind thru the levels right? because your a hater right?

I never said it was the best or best game ever - anywhere! check if you like.

But I do know if you find talking AoC is sure a chore because is obvious from your posts then I have to ask why are you even posting here? Infact it looks to me like you don't even like mmorpgs, because in some way or another you will have to do some grind, no matter how small some will always be present somewhere. Its that repetitive nature that you find gets addictive for some.

I am not a fan of grinding but I not it wont take very long to lvl up in AoC. Even the crafting is no experience based....

So have you really got an interest in the game? or are you as confused as your avatar?

Yes, you're right, levels were just put in so you'd know you're level 80 after naming your charecter

Yes, your constant blind praise and defense of the game could only mean that you're neutral

Well, there is WAR, where the game is designed around you leveling through PvPing from start to finish...and you only grind in PvE if you feel like it. AoC makes you PvE SOLO grind the first 20 levels, then PvE grind the last 60, then 20 more in PvP.

You know this how exactly? Devs told you, and you blindly trusted them?

I thought it sounded realy cool when I read about it in PC Gamer about 4 years ago, but the info released about it has been nothing but disapointing.

Cheers for replying I can tell you just post and troll here looking for a text fight its kinda obvious now.

Its also shows your not well informed about the game, as the first 20 levels aren't solo grind whatsoever.

I praise the game because I am excited for it. I am excited for the concepts it hopes to bring to the genre. Its not a blind following, so forgive me for taking a developers word over you 4 year old PC Gamer article, I would like to think it carried more weight. I tend to look into the factual side of reports evident from the posts I make with links to the press who have played hands on also. There are parts of AoC that im not a huge fan of - but i do have the capacity to look at the bigger picture.

I would put the word "play" where you put the word "grind". I have heard plenty of time it take bout 50 hours to get to level 40, I would hardly call that a grind. Do I believe you, misinformed, an unknown, no credentials and looking for a fight or a developer who is open in talking to the public here on these forums, on other, on IRC and has hands on experience in telling me about AoC?

I forgot to menton that the AoC devs are alot different that the Vanguard ones, I've seen it first hand. Difference is Funcom don't employ Brad McQuaid, EA employ the Vanguard devs now:P

We'll just see when it come out shall we? I have high hopes for it and have been following it closely. I see new generation written all over it, blood, gore, rated "M." What else is out there right now that even comes close to it? There's no way this game is gonna be another grind fest. The mobs look like they'll eat you alive if you don't know what you're doing. Big time survival factor in this one.

Only problem there is you don't need to grind PvE to do well in PvP in AoC, especially when it comes to gear.

And are you having a bad day or is every post I see from you today either trolling or bitching about trolls.

Just goes to show how little he knows about games that arn't EQ grindfests... anyone that post nostalgicly about EQ and then wants to accuse ANY game of being a bigger grind is the epitome of a hypocrite

Seriously people that think AoC is gonna suck and that WAR or any other MMO will be better, go ahead and stick with the games you think will deliver. I see no point in saying that AoC wont deliver and saying not to take the devs word for it when your willing to take another games dev's seriously. We play games for entertainment value. Whats the point in wasting time arguing over games that arent even out?

If you dont like AoC thats cool, if you think it doesnt offer anything decent yet WAR does; thats fine as well. It doesnt mean AoC is gonna suck and WAR is gonna rule or vice versa. Were all gamers people, we stand to benefit if both games end up being good. This bullshit some people carry on about hating a game etc is retarded imo. All we have from all unreleased games are videos and dev journals (that applies to every game not released), you honestly have no choice but to take their word until you can pernonally judge yourself.

EDIT: back to the OP, there is a lot AoC offers to the table besides combat (though it is the focal point) if you truly read the main site.

Ok, I got 2 problems with what you said here.

    1. Do not, under any circumstances, doubt the PvP in WAR, because as far as I'm concerned, compared to AoC PvP, there is no competition... and you know it.

    2. I fail to see why all these AoC fans are saying World of Warhammer. Is it because you hate WoW so much that you must take it out on WAR? Is it because you saw the graphics and assumed it was WoW 2? Is it because you feel so godamn threatened by a game that you feel may be good and may achieve greatness that you must degrade it in an attempt to illustrate your opinion in an unmeaningful and pathetic way? Seriously, PLEASE tell me. You and I both know that WAR will be good and so will AoC. So why must you be so ignorant towards a game that you do not wish to play? Sad really. I look at the WAR forums and don't see any of this Worlf of Conan or AoC sucks garbage. Then you come to this forum and you got arguing and bitching and World of Warhammer crap going around. What the hell kind of community is this?

I personally will not be playing either game but I still like to see what new games are coming. And if this is the type of community to expect in AoC, then I would never like to be part of it. Whatever, do what you like. Remember to make the smart choice

    Humanity

We will always find things to disagree over but now it's getting stupid, MMO's becoming the new religion.

I'll try both games and I think both will be good but both will have their problems for sure.

Anything besides combat? Not sure what you're looking for in an MMO there buddy... intense crafting? Magic-the-Gathering mini-games? New and exciting dance emotes? The difference between this game and many others currently out or in development is that the combat is a lot more dynamic and interactive. It's not the EQ classic 1-2-3 button-push-and-wait-for-cooldown system that lets you play while watching TV, it's something a little more skilful, interactive and tactical (and no, kiting is not tactics). The pace in the promo vids seems slow but I think this is more to allow for reactive gameplay rather than just button-mashing once combat becomes more demanding (ie. during PvP).

One thing I will say about the footage of AoC I've seen so far is that its art direction is superb, and more importantly immersive. This really does seem to be the lynchpin on which games succeed or fail - whether or not an interesting and cohesive style is created. WoW (love it or hate it) did this very well, as did LoTRO. Vanguard largely failed to create this atmosphere, and this became another nail in its coffin. Both AoC and WAR seem to be doing everything they can to ensure the worlds they create feel like living, breathing places... I think that this, as much if not more than the combat system, is the success that Conan is bringing to the table. Neither game will fail, and more importantly neither game needs to fail for the other to succeed. For me AoC's style is a slightly better fit but that's entirely personal, and I'll definitely be giving other titles a try.

It's ok to like more than one thing. And just because you don't like something, doesn't mean you have to hate it.

That could not be more of a quintessential fanboism if it tried...

A: You have never played either do you cannot make such a positive claim

B: WAR is the same Ol' click-to-target-spam-powers bullshit from every other MMO back to EQ/UO.... thats BETTER than ANYTHING how?

Actually I couldn't disagree more. I'd be the first to admit I don't know the real details about WARs PvP, but from what I do know, AoC's is going to be just so much better IMHO. But I'd love a good honest discussion on it. To see why so many poeple think that WARs PvP is going to be so uber. Seriously.

Lol mostly cause it just gets under trolls like the OPs skin. I know WAR isn't WoW 2. Just remember who started this discussion, a WAR fan who spent all day yesterday trolling and flaming in posts like this one.

Take note that THIS websites forums is always this way, on almost all boards. This post has AoC fans sinking lower a bit because it was started to entice, flame and troll us. It's no different then WAR fans on their board when someone starts a flame thread.

The AoC community on the official boards if a fantastic one. Sure you've got your bad apples, but you'll find it's generally full of great people.

As to the smart choice. I'll make that for sure. AoC is beyond my most anticipated, but for good reason. I've looked into it and followed it a lot and it looks to offer the most for the type of MMOG gamer I am. Not to mention it's being made by Funcom. I think it's a possibility that WAR could have grabbed me, but I'm a gamer that loves games that push the boundaries, and WAR doesn't appear to do that much at all. Also I have lost a lot of respect for Mythic over the years that I played DAoC on and off. I just don't really expect them to pull their act together. Still, I do follow the game. I've signed up for beta and will faithfully test the game if I should get in. But my heart is with AoC.

Now, shall we discuss the PvP?

Oh that's great... so now you're judging games when you dont know anything about them. Wow... time has changed. Obviously, seeing how you are a diehard fan of AoC, nothing anyone says or does will ever change your opinion, so this is a very pointless argument. But, I would appreciate it if you would give me some evidence to back up your statement about AoC having better PvP. If you can do this, then WAR sucks, I admit it. What would be the point of playing WAR when you got fantastic PvE and PvP in one game. So yes please show me. Your time starts.......................now.

I didn't want to get into this, but I feel I should speak up now.  From someone that is hyped about WAR and AoC. . .I feel I should input my opinion.   In all honesty we don't really know much about WAR's PvP either.  Sure, we've seen a few videos (we have with AoC too) and WAR, while interesting, doesn't really bring much to the table as far as PvP goes.  They are trying new things like quests in PvP and the whole tier thing, but from what I've seen video wise. . .it looks stale in a way.  Like I've said, we've only seen a few PvP videos in AoC and from what we can tell, at least we have a totally new combat feature instead of your standard click and press 1-0.  But there is really no way to tell which is better or which sucks until we actually play the games.  So every opinion statement from here on until open beta is invalid because we just do not know how either game plays, until we've tried them ourselves.
