In-Game Advertising OR Monthly Fee to play - POLL

ginettiginetti Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 301

Hi there.

I'm sure everyone has their current favourite MMORPG or at least, a favourite one that has either died or changed so much, it's unrecognizable.

Either way, you all have some beautiful memories of playing in that or those partiular MMORPG's, and my question to you is...

Were you happy to pay a Monthly Fee or would you have prefered to have a free account but with In Game Advertising?

As long as the game is good and entertaining I don't care what type of revenue strategy the publisher uses.

I would gladly pay monthly fee if the money I give go to: keep the service top notch, the game bug free and new features and content constantly in production.

Wouln't mind in game advertising either. As long as it is creativly done and doesn't distract form the game itsself.

I'd rather just pay the $15 a month. I don't want advertising ruining the environment of the genre.

It could work in a sci-fi mmorpg...but not in a Fantasy MMORPG...but I would prefer just to pay a monthly fee with no advertising.

Definetely monthly fee, tried some free games with item shop and/or advertising and hated it.

well its not really the advertisement that I dislike, its the immature community that comes with it.

If free to play games would come with a mature community, I would pick in - game advertising.

In-game advertision is a big no-no, except in a racing MMOG for instance where it just would be like the real thing.

  • TriumvirateTriumvirate Member Posts: 156

It would depend on how the advertising worked in game.  If it was in-game ads just for the sake of having them, thrown about throughout the world wherever they figured they could get the most money for them, then no, I wouldn't touch it.  If done right though I would definitely play one, in fact, I'd be interested to see more companies try to make it work.

A few good points were made, especially regarding free games and the community that usually is part of that.

However, as per my example, I’ve been trying out Anarchy Online (not bad, im playing it because its the closest thing i can find to a shadowrun online game lol ) and finding the community to be mature indeed.

This is perhaps due to the appeal of the game, its learning curve (steep imo) and its age.

Either way, the in game advertising in this game does work, as they are billboards in a sci fi world, and i actually take the time to stop and check em out.

It actualy brings the world to more life, makes me feel part of a living breathing environment.

I don’t know how it would work in a game like LOTRO.

Wow look how many people frivously spend their cash...

Sacrifice advertising for a monthly fee of 15 bucks a month? Really sickening. Paying to play a game is so outragous.

Advertising, of course. If I dont have to pay, I would gladly tolerate popups.

As long as the game is good, I would gladly pay double the current rate AND pay for expansions (as long as they were good).

    No to adverts.

I prefer to have in game ads to keep the server running. When I buy a game I don't want to have to pay in order to be able to keep playing. Ads in game don't affect my gameplay and won't cost me any cash, but I refuse to buy a game with monthly fees. That is why I have Guild Wars at least they don't charge me any extra.

I would definately rather pay the monthly fee, I dont want to see Coca Cola commercials in a LotR inn, that would just ruin the game completely. Paying monthly really isnt that big of a deal, if you buy 6 months you end up paying 10 dollars a month, that isnt that much. People who play single player games buy usually a game every month or two and thats alot more than paying 15 dollars a month. I love single player games and love MMORPGs but when im usually into an MMO I dont buy any single player games unless its something that I really really love like Mass Effect or Halo 3.

That's a good point - many people are put off by the monthly aspect of the payment options.

And there are others that find it hard to pay the money, while others would say "how can it be hard to scrounge up 15 - 20 bucks a month"

To some it really is difficult - especialy when you don't get to sit around all the time playing.

I for one have no problems paying the monthly fee, but i have a mate who becuase of his 2 kids and so on really struggles to pay to play (when the kids are at their mums).

But i still voted Pay to play - just wanted to highlight this good point.

You say that, and for the most part, you are probably correct, however as i stated above, i've been playing AO and have yet to witness or see a childish act / message or anything like that.

Maybe i'm running on a lucky streak eh

I'm perfectly fine with ingame advertising as long as it's within the context of the game. For example, while walking through a modern city in an MMO, it would only seem natural to have billboards and screens with advertising on them. It would seem strange without them. A fantasy MMO with an AMD advert in it for example is just wrong. Adverts can contribute to a game if implemented correctly.

I didn't like the sound of advertisements in games until I saw it done in Planetside. It's actually kinda cool and at first I thought... how much did Planetside have to pay to put that Air Force ad in the game?

As long as the ad is done in a way that is consistent with the game genre, it's very appealing I think.

Not to mention, if it means they get advertising money that can apply to more game development or reduced monthly fees, that's a good thing!

Yeah I could see it working in modern type MMO's but not in a fantasy/medieval setting.

I'd rather pay good money to enjoy a game in peace than get spammed by stupid ads.

I voted for monthly payments. I for one do not want any form of advertisement inside the game. If I wanted that I would watch TV. Which I don't except for anime, news, and a few good shows. Also it kinda ensures that you have stable servers and continuous content.

I also thought about how 9 dragons does it. Pay for a piece of clothing that deletes itself after 30 days so i have to buy it again? No thanks.

    Just my two cents.
