Is it worth it?

Judasgoat98Judasgoat98 Member UncommonPosts: 158

I have decided to move on and find a new mmorpg, but I can't really decide just yet. I've been thinking about trying WoW, but I'm not to happy about the monthly fee. I don't think 15 bucks a month is really worth playing it, but I haven't really tried it yet. I think I might try Guild Wars do to the fact that there is no monthly fee, but I really don't want to have to buy the expansions. WAR looks pretty sweet, and if theres no monthly fee, thats probably what I'll be playing. But anyways, I need your guy's advice. Is it worth 15 bucks a month to play WoW?

My personal opinion is, if you aren't willing to pay 15 bucks a month for a MMO, you should leave the MMO scene.

That being said, if you haven't played WoW yet, it IS an excellent game, worth a try. I personally quit after 2+ years of it though. =/

Its fun to level in WoW, but end game is very time consuming and repetitive. I'd have to say wait for the next mmos coming out this fall, that includes Pirates of the Burning Sea (The one i want), Age of Conan (looks very good), and Gods & Heroes.

AoC, and PoTBS are really going to hurt WoW imo. Not to mention WAR which comes around the corner next year made by the devs of the amazing DAoC.

I wish COH/COV didn't have a monthly fee and copied what GW does, COH/COV are great games but they really aren't worth 15$ a month, the game is to much like a action rpg than a mmo i still love it though but they wont be getting my money.

you don't need to buy the expansions to enjoy guild wars.

I started with Factions, and then I got Nightfall. I never even bought the original Guild Wars.

WoW and GW are extremely different mmos though. What game were you previously playing?

And on the monthly WoW fee, i think it's worth it. I would do the free trial first to see if you even like the game before you pay for the game and the fee.

Currently Playing : WAR, UO, RL :p

First of all WoW has a large advantage over most games(and has earned it) with a huge population, the only exceptions to that are the real low pop servers so avoid them. Its very easy to find groups for instances all the way up from lvl 1-70. With the Burning Crusade expansion, Blizzard has made it much easier for small groups of people to continue to upgrade their gear without being 'forced' into a larger raid guild. Eventually if you want to progress then yes you will need to join a powergamers guild to see the real high end stuff but this is months down the road from when you first start.

I've enjoyed WoW but to be honest its not my ideal type of game I'd like to be playing, I'm more of a sandbox style MMO player but there's really nothing out right now that catches my eye. Due to the large availability of groups, content, PvP(lol) and overall game polish WoW probably gets the highest score with a close 2nd to EQ2 and EvE. The latter two games are excellent choices also btw.

And yes, if $15 a month is the deciding factor on whether or not you're going to play the game you should probably find a different job or maybe take on a 2nd job and not worry about MMOs at all.

Almost all the pay-to-play MMOs offer considerably more content than free-to-play games. Hence to anyone earning a decent income, the choice is a no-brainer. Go for a pay-to-play game like WoW.

However if you can't afford to pay this money then your only choice would be a free to play game. Many of these can be quite fun, although would be unlikely to hold your attention for more than a few months.

Some people have already mentioned Guild Wars, and it's definitely one of the better F2P games, particularly if you enjoy pvp, although there are plenty of others around e.g. nine dragons, granada espada etc.

    Can't afford $15?

A job would be a much better use of your time instead of playing *any* MMO.

Id say download both games and try their free trials, then decide. They are both extremely different games, and each has their pros and cons. I personally enjoy them both. 12.99Euros is definitely worth it in my opinion.

ehh i played WoW for iunno a year and a half maybe and i got very very bored of the game i just. all the time i played wasn't straight through i quit many a times and came back due to friends bugging me too, and after playing it a couple times its so boring because all your doing is all the stuff you did before and the pvp is so utterly boring, the only way the pvp stays some what entertaining is world pvp on a pvp server other than that doing the same 5 bgs over and over is cause enough to shoot yourself in the head. Im in the same rut as you looking for a new mmo and as for War sorry but it will most likely have a monthly fee.

Just curious and not to start a flame fest.....You are 26 years old with no job and not even in high school ?

    Waiting on Guild Wars 2

WoW is definitely worth a try.  Seeing that you don't like monthly fees, you probably never played a good MMO.  I would try it out at least to lvl 30 to see how you like it.  GW is a good game, but it's no MMO.  WoW definitely surpasses GW on content.  If you want very little PVE and straight up PvP (also limited to only 6 skills when you battle) try GW.  If you don't like monthly fees it's going to be real hard to find a quality MMO, and that's the truth.  Also, if your friends are playing and want you to roll a certain class.  I wouldn't listen to them.  Just go with what looks fun to you.  If you wanna be on the mostly winning side for battlegrounds (PvP) roll horde.  If you mostly want PvE roll alliance.

It sounds to me like you just want to DL warez from net and then play it and have fun. $15 per month is not worth it? Fine, go play those F2P MMOs with item shops. Since you never played WoW it will offer some of the best fun a person can have outside the bed. And you are too cheap to even pay $15 for it... Pff. You are not worth it, not the game.

Oh and "I don't have $15" ... LMAO! I would ask you if you live in some African country that no one heard of where people make 1 cent per day. Your life must be very sad... But considering you have PC it aint that bad. And I bet it's okay to waste $20 every weekend on drinks and smokes with friends. Even if you are on social support you have extra $15 per month, so don't lie to us.

If he can't afford $15 per month then he has bigger things to worry about then what game he should play...

Every time I read your post, I die a little inside...

Theres enough kids in WOW already, do me a favor and stay far far away ....pleassssssssseee!

On a more serious note, If you cant afford the 15 bucks a month and your parents dont spoil you by paying for everything you want, try guild wars or some other game. If you really want to findo ut for yourself, try the free trials though. Goodluck

I shouldn't have stated I can't AFFORD 15$ a month, its just do I wanna pay that much? I downloaded the free trial (Which took about 8 hours) and then started playing it. It looked ok at first but I kept getting d/c. Prolly cause I'm running on a wireless modem. Point being do I really wanna pay 15 bucks a month for a game?

No I don't live in africa, and sadly I am not 26, but 15.

I'm sorry that I am just getting into real MMO's unlike your self whos probably been playing for a good 5 years. All I am really asking is if this game is worth my attention and money, thank you and please stop flaming. -_-

as you can see, by the idiots posting, this is what the player bass is like, i played for 15 months i think, and have been having problems , with ingame bordom, for about 3 months, i left last month,  its an ok game, yes is a grind, the players are idiots, pvp is rubbish,  but it plays nice and there is plenty to do, and at times it can be fun,

i,m now playing guildwars nightfall,3rd one out, and have also brought the first one as well,

its free, best point of all ,pvp is a real blast, graphics seem good , for a game thats getting on now, player base , seems ok, and a good storyline to fall back on, , if you cant get a group, use hero's or henchmen, free ncp, grouping

just a few things, for you to think about, but good, luck and search the net for free games, although some are not great, its great fun, just playing them for a few days,

  • MasterchiefMMasterchiefM Member Posts: 99

Its all based on what you like and what you want to play, but if you dont like the $15 fee then you might wanna check out Guild Wars, because most MMO's out their require that $15 Monthly fee. I personally played WoW for a good two years and I loved it till the expansion came out, and when it did I completely lost the fun in it, I just didnt enjoy it anymore.

But there is a trial for WoW if you want to try it without buying it first.

  • porkie9porkie9 Member Posts: 22

i liked wow until the expansion. for me it killed th game, more grinding prolly, did,t think the stuff looked that good, and the places seemed, almost like it was chucked together, nothing like it should have done,

wow is about bigger numbers, thats all, some one once said to me, the expansion is great, i can hit 5k, and thats sums up wow,

i,m finding guildwars is about game play, and not, my epic has more dps than yours,

  • tallshortguytallshortguy Member Posts: 92

I personally played GW from launch to last year and trust me, don't let the GW paying model fool you. If you frequent some of the most popular GW forum sites, you'll find that the math has been worked out and, at the current rate of expansion releases(2 expansions a year) it'll end up costing you something like $7 a month, granted you want to keep up with the rest of the population. You can, of courese, just play the original and not buy expansions, but that's your decision. Anyways, other than GW, I've never found any non-required monthly fee MMO to be entertaining for more than a few weeks maybe. So, if you want to browse the free MMO scene, go right ahead. My personal opinion is that paying MMOs 99% of the time are better than free ones.

I hope that helped answer you question

In the end, logic and reason always beat out fanboys.
