So what if games have high hype? Not like it matters to development.

And I am pretty sure if Tabula Rasa lasted only 3 years it wouldn't be a classic MMO or even considered a success. Look at Richard Garriot's first MMO, UO, its going on ten years.

call me fickle, but when someone uses single letters and abbreviations for words that reduce typing by two and three letters it completely turns me off to the post. if someone chooses to type this way in a game because the speed of it is important, then so be it, but in everyday posts and general typing.. it makes me feel icky.

a lot of player over hype is just plain from excitement about SOMETHING.. ANYTHING for that matter, that looks worthy of playing. i mean really.. if you were "promised" everything you were looking for in a new and upcoming game wouldn't you also be singing it's praises as the second coming of christ ? whether the games lives up to it's hype  isn't the players fault, for that you can blame the false promises, as good as their intention may be, of the development teams.

Says the poster who can't be bothers to hit the Shift key for the vast majority of their post.  Stones and glasshouses. :P

On topic - pretty much any new MMO is overhyped I think.  In an increasingly busy and competative market I guess developers have to overhype to get their game noticed.  The worrying thing is unless they have a marketing budget with lots of numbers in it then the chances of getting noticed are decreasing.

Call me lazy then, since I frankly don't feel like typing out Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning every time I wish to discuss the game.

On topic: There doesn't seem to be a middle ground either for hype, it's either hyped like crazy or nearly forgotten.

Fun Factor is what makes or breaks a game, if its not fun just play something else.

Actually technically if a game has too much hype it could have a big impact on development. A CEO could see how popular it is and demand it get released earlier than it should, before the hype goes out and to maximize his profits. Bad in players eyes, good in his.

    Just my two cents.

dude have you seen the developer and inside look at WAR, it's mostly talk but you see some of there plans and that game is gonna be awesome it's what alot of people have been waiting for.  WoW is an instance based game WAR is no way gonna be like WoW.  It's gonna be a real world without that instance garbage.  The last thing I seen on War which I thought was awesome was dwarves getting in barrels and going off a waterfall and assaulting a orc base.   It showed that the base would defend itself and players would be able to battle together with NPC vs npc and players.  This game is taking more from whats it called...... DAOC rvrvr style.

You haven't seen nothing really cause I know I havent' seen much. But i've heard alot and know how to read and understand.  Your just some foo who mad the game you like most is not hyped up..... you are a shallow guy :/

I don't get too excited about MMO releases anymore and probably never will again.  I've been let down too many times.  I also do very little research on them.   For example I plan to try GnH,  AoC, and WAR but I know very little about each of them.   Because if they turn out to be bad I feel I would have wasted my time doing the research on them.  What's written on paper and what's in the game are always gonna be different.

Or maybe it's that I'm afraid I'll be let down again if I get too hyped about it.  Plus I like things to be a surprise when I play them.

Anymore, I'm more interested in the technology side of MMOs than their gameplay aspects. I mean consider the vlog promoting AoC. In one scene, they actually showed some of the tools they use to make the game world. I like the fact they're actually building it "by hand" in that no part of their game is going to be randomly generated like in the days of old. Plus, it looks like, at least to me, AoC will have some fairly decent scale compared to other MMOs currently (EQ2 oddly has a fairly 'large' scale to some zones as well).

As for Tabula Rasa, I think it may be a hit, but not a WoW-killer hit, rather I think it will bring FPSers into the MMO market, instead of treating them like red headed step children (for once). And Warhammer Online... WAAAAAAAAGH! or DAOC 2.0, either way it should be fun for faction/realm focused PVP.

Anyways, I think folks who think MMOs are suppose to be the Second Coming, ought to check their priorities. They should be fun first, and serious later...way later.
