Vatican: Non-Catholics 'wounded' by not recognizing pope

patri0tzpatri0tz Member UncommonPosts: 185

Well I guess if by "wounded" they mean the Vatican's attitude is a pain in the ass, then I agree.

The Vatican on Tuesday said Christian denominations outside the Roman Catholic Church were not full churches of Jesus Christ.

A 16-page document, prepared by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which Pope Benedict used to head, described Christian Orthodox churches as true churches, but suffering from a "wound" since they do not recognize the primacy of the Pope.

But the document said the "wound is still more profound" in the Protestant denominations -- a view likely to further complicate relations with Protestants.
"Despite the fact that this teaching has created no little distress ... it is nevertheless difficult to see how the title of 'Church' could possibly be attributed to them," it said.

*looks around for a reason in the Bible to give a crap about what the Pope has to say

Nope...can't find one, thanks for playing though.

For the record, I'm not hostile towards Catholics, I'm hostile towards Catholicism.

    you see

This is why I was an Anglo-catholic Priest and NOT a Roman Catholic Priest.  They have SO many traditions that aren't even scriptural and yet if we do not recognize that the Pope of Rome we are "wounded."

I could go on for years about this but I'll stop now. I have nothing against Roman Catholics but I long for the day when Roman Catholics and Protestants can share communion together.  Right now, the Roman Catholic church wont do this; but we'll see.

I agree... edited the OP to clarify whose attitude is a pain in the ass.  Anyway, I'm just curious about what the Vatican's trying to accomplish now that they've got a more hard-line pope that's issuing statements to even further alienate Christians.  They're not exactly high on the credibility scale as it is after all the scandals in recent years.  Seems like they'd be more careful about their PR.

three years ago, i offered to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Baltimore my services of the Priesthood. This man was esctatic and more than gloriously happy that I called.  He was in ectasy when I even told him I was n my 20s and not some typical 60 year old. You see, the average age of the Roman Catholic Priest is now 55. If you are a RC Priest, you not only have one church but about 5 to take of.

Then I told him that I was happily married with children.  That's when the crickets started to overwhelm the silence on the phone line.  He was shocked and told me I cannot do this. I explained to him why not? Why cannot a Priest participate in the sancitity of Marriage when he is required to be involved in all the others or fear an eternal life of hell.

He explained to me one scripture: " It is best for a man to preach the word of God without being married. " I simply explained to him the correct version of what that scripture really meant in which the second part of the verse states: "however, if you burn in passion, then marry for it is better to be married than it is to burn."  The Bishop didnt like it when I properly explained that verse which means: If you live a life of ministry it is better to do it single because you do not need to worry about additional finances, burdons, extrinsic things causing you to break your attention but if  you are burning with passion (i.e., horney and need some loving and desired to be loved) then by all means marry!

They havent figured this out even despite the fact that for thousands of years monks and nuns have been having forbidding sex underneath their monastaries and covents in literally every country in Europe and a lot in the US (google it sometime) and the fact that priests are turning their sexual desires towards children who cannot defend themselves.

Well...the Bishop certainly did not like that. You see, they are so caught up in their traditions that they fail to see their leadership is dying.

it sure doesn't.  It talks about elders of the church. Never says we need to bow down to some man in Rome and claim him as the voice piece of God.

That's why the middle ages were horrible in terms of religious tolerance.  The Papacy was a political seat more than a spiritual one. And...well..you know how people in high political status can be; now imagine those who have the power to topple Kings of any country of Europe. Absolute power corrupts absolutely

There are so many doctrines in Roman Catholicism that aren't scripturally based, it's not hard to see why there's such a rift between them and Protestants.  It's the same problem with Jehovah's Witnesses.  Anytime there's a central organization (Vatican, Watchtower, etc.) that has unquestionable control over what their followers are allowed to believe, it ceases to be a Bible-based religion and leans more towards cult status.

Everyone, Christians included, should do their own research and not automatically trust the word of a "higher class" within the religion.  Otherwise, the leaders have no accountability.

Best stated by John Milton: "A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believe things only because his pastor says so, or the assembly so determines, without knowing other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy."

I always tell my mom that I will go back to church when 3 things happen.

    1. Women are allowed to be priests.

    2. Priests are allowed to marry.

    3. When they get rid of the concept of original sin.

Just a bunch of dumbass traditions that are really holding them back.

Also, this pope has turned out to be a complete jackass. He has turned more people against the church than the crusades did.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

There is actually some scriptural base for not allowing women to be priests...though not in the way that the Catholics do it.  My church has female ministry leaders and stuff like that (not nuns in any way, regular women who want to serve) but all of the actual pastors are men.

As far as not being allowed to marry, or confession of sins to a priest, or the pope, or any of the catholic heirarchy for that matter, none of that is scriptural, in fact, the concept of a Pope went against the spirit of what Jesus taught, which was simply to love one another and to not put any man on a pedestol...there is only one high priest of the Christian faith, and it was Jesus, not some guy in a funny hat who lives in a pin prick of a country and drives around in a bullet proof car.

If I so choose to believe in God, then in God shall I place my faith and service. I would not, and will not, bow to some joker in a white robe with his own private little army just because he is supposed to "represent" God on Earth. Unless he can get God on the phone and arrange for a meeting, the pope is just another peon. A man, like us. And I worship no man.

I believe there are passages in the Bilble, in Revelations for one, which speak of false chuches and false prophets, and what happens to them in the end?

IMHO, I hope all the different pope's robes are fire retardent.

I recognise that the pope is a primate! ...or is that not what was meant?

This qoute above is very succinct. It has been characterised with verbal brevity and kind of sums up many of the comments I've read in this thread.

  • olddaddyolddaddy Member Posts: 3,356

I never understood why comments like this from a catholic church official upset anyone. This is just typical.

When I was in grade school a catholic priest told all the young catholic kids that they would go to heaven because they were catholic, and the protestants were damned to hell because they weren't catholic. The catholic kids came to public school the next day and ridiculed the protestent kids with this. The protestant kids went home and told their parents, who told the protestant ministers, who called the catholic priest, who told the protestant ministers that it was true and he would not correct his talk with the catholic kids.

All the community was up in arms, and the catholic priest remained unrepetent.

I just blew the whole thing off as coming from a silly old fart.

    Has anything really changed?

I have a problem with that whole thing.  I'm with Seabass on this one.  I don't see any reason (other than chauvinism) to keep a woman from being a pastor.  To me it's misuse of the religion to suppress the talents and leadership that women can bring.

It's just like a hiring process.  A woman could have made a better pastor, but she's a woman, so we decided to go with the dude instead.  Why?  Well, because he's got a penis and so we just trust that he'll be better.

And this is why I can never be a Catholic. It does not make any sense, when the only person you are supposed to actualy "love" is Jesus, and not some creepy old looking dude that wears a funny hat and white clothing all the time. He's just another human making a profit from Religion that also controls the masses through power of the Church and the whole fear of going to hell if you dont believe.

I should also mention why I feel this would make the church a better place.

    1. Women are allowed to be priests. (This would show that the church believes that everyone is equal under the eyes of God. As it is right now the church says "Yes, we are all equal under the eyes of God. Well, except you women.)

    2. Priests are allowed to marry. (This would allow for many more people to become priests. Also married people would be less likely to rape altar boys/girls to overcome their sexual frustration.)

    3. When they get rid of the concept of original sin. (I have never liked this idea that even before I had a chance to do anything wrong I already did. This stems from Adam and Eve's betrayal of God by eating the apple. Oh, so someone else fucked up and I get blamed for it even though I wasn't around? Thats like blaming me for slavery. Hello I am only 32 years old I wasn't even around then.)

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

I always thought that Jesus wanted everyone to know that thier love is for god, not the church.

The church shouldn't rule over your life.  He wasn't revolting agains the Romans, but the leaders of the Jewish church.

The Pope and the catholic church has set themselves in place of the Jews during the Roman times.  They have concocted enough phony ceremonies and traditions that I think the romans are bordering on worshipping false idols.  They expect christians to serve the pope, and that is the complete oposite of what Jesus wanted.

He preached the spreading of the word of god through faith in him, not a church.

My personal opinion is that muslims still have it worse.

Know any place to find this kind of info?  It would be interesting to see who is disliked the most.
