Yay I'm a newb, but I heard you can get a mount at level one with 100g so I bought some from a goldseller. I'm off to buy my mount! Horrible idea hands down!
It isn't a horrible idea if it's only available to those with lvl.70 chars (or whatever level is max in the future).
Mount at level one is just stupid. Levels 1-10 are designed as tutorial. They slowly introduce you to the game by example. INtroducing new features like grouping, training, talents. You don't need to go to your faction city untill you hit lvl 15. Ico
Um, I believe the OP was referencing people who have at least one max level character already. I seriously doubt that this type of player needs a lvl 1-10 tutorial to introduce grouping, training, or talents. Maybe you should re-read his post.
Now I haven't played WoW in nearly a year, but I comprehend where the OP is coming from.
I feel that the ability to unlock a mount option AFTER you hit, say, 60 or 70 would be a glorious idea. It's extra incentive to lvl up and work hard on one character. Like with CoH and the ability to unlock Peacebringer/Warshade. You hit level 50 and BAM you open up those two options.
In EQ2 you are able to buy mounts as soon as you have the money. I love that feature. Although, I do often wind-up near broke since I insist on buying mounts for near all my toons. Silly me.
In VG, mounts are available at level 10. The nice thing is that you can either be a level 10 adventurer or a level 10 crafter.
I do not see an issue with introducing mounts for lower level characters in WoW. And who care if it takes someone just that bit longer to get somewhere if they do not have a mount. People need to be more understanding, imho.

That is the same as asking for level 70 gear on a level 2 character. No, thank you.
You've got to be joking! Mounts don't really affect your power at all except in PvP. When it comes to fighting mounts don't do ANYTHING for you. This is purely to alleviate the boredom of slow travel. This is my opinion and I don't really care who disagrees with me.
I only read the OP. I hope I am not repeating someone's thought entirely.
Instead of giving every player mounts the game should give players a run speed buff for remaining on paths. This would give players the ability to move quickly from town to town and quest giver to quest giver without the other advantages a mount gives. Players need something besides leveling to keep them occupied. Paths should have a purpose besides just looking different and having less spawns walk over them.

In WoW mounts do affect your power in PvE. The speed at which a player can travel from spawn point to quest giver great changes their leveling speed. Although mobs take the same damage from players with mounts, mounted players can more easily get to places and run directly through monsters to get there. One advantage of having no mount for 40 levels is learning how to negotiate the terrain before being able to ride over it on a mount.
I see your point but jesus, how hard is it to negotiate terrain? If you run through a pack of mobs you'll most likely die...sometimes even on your mount.
While im not sure if people should get mounts at level 1, i'm not against it im not for it. If I had to pick I would say no because before level 30 travel isn't a hassle maybe a tad slow but not a hassle. I think introducing mounts at level one would force a lot more players into Gold Buying. Not everyone has been playing the game for two years and has thousands of gold stockpiled. I've never seen a game that you could obtain something that would be comparable to a mount in WoW that early.
Personally I think with the level cap at 70 and the majority of players being veterans I think level 30 would be reasonable as that is when you really start to need to travel back and forth a lot between zones, before that you can grab 10-20 quests stay out for a while. Also this mark would make it somewhat reasonable for new players to obtain that much gold.
By the time you hit lvl 30 some classes do have a movement speed incraesed skills:
Hunters, Shamans, Druids have travel form, Mages have Teleport, Rouges have sprint (still something). (I believe Warlock summon is also an option though cannot confirm.)
The rest can get speed increesed enchants and speed potions. And while thouse buffs might not be viable for new players, veterans with gold to spare can find it a solutiuon.
Mount at level one is just stupid. Levels 1-10 are designed as tutorial. They slowly introduce you to the game by example. INtroducing new features like grouping, training, talents. You don't need to go to your faction city untill you hit lvl 15. The big distances the zones are to separate one rea from another, not only mob wise but also visualy. It creats the illusion of a life world and helps with the charcter immersion. Not that you care since you are there for the grind, but new players do. "Ok, but we are 'ard core and we have 2+ other maxxed imba powerful other chars. Why should we put up with the tedious travel, or grind, or rep grind, or leveling, or doing instances, till we hit the level and stats we want." Well lucky for you the chinese have found a solution - Cheaper and under 2 weeks only at ... But then again we want to play the game why else we pay for it, we only want to play it on our terms - oneshoting bosses, instatrveing around the map, invincible to player attacks but iba kicking arse to other players, having epics at lvl 1. Hey thats a new one, let's make a lvl 1 quest for giving imba weapons and armor that is mega hard - so you need 2 lvl70 friends to do it. That would fit the game just right. But untill then whenever we are pissed at the game we'll just spamm whine the forums, np. Ico
Disagree 100% and you're post is way exaggerated to what I was trying to say. If anyone is a true new player then they couldn't afford the 100g to buy the mount regardless of level. And for the second time, if you already have a level 70 then why the hell do you need a "tutorial" for your alt character??
But hey buddy, if you enjoy mind numbly boring travel along with endless grinds well I guess that's your thing. But the rest of us want to actually have fun.
I'm glad at least the majority agree with me (from the time of this post).
I actually am going to agree with the above poster. Maybe not with such harsh words, but I think travel should be level restricted. One major reason is the gold farmers, needing lots of money for a mount at lvl 1 opens a huge market.
I see your point but jesus, how hard is it to negotiate terrain? If you run through a pack of mobs you'll most likely die...sometimes even on your mount.
In WoW the change from pre-mount to post-mount is astounding. Although packs of mobs can still kill you if they daze you, most of the time your character has such a large distance it doesn't matter. Mobs in WoW do not follow people to zone lines. Instead, mobs return to their spawn points after a certain distance. Players with mounts can cover this distance much more easily.
Also, you made a point about having a 70 already. Everything you do after your first trip to 70 is rather similar. Quests, areas, mounts, levels, etc are all the same (or very similar). Even opposing factions level up in nearly the same areas. Taking away one trial from players who have a 70 would seem unfair to those who must walk from place to place instead of mounting and skipping the trudge.
Think of it this way. Every character you start is distinctly different from all previous characters. There is no connection expect the mail system. Allowing lower level characters that are alts to have more advantages would make new players feel gimped and less likely to level. Players with alts can already send items, gold, and have knowledge that new players do not have. If you continually give alts advantages new players become discouraged.
I do not see a problem letting those that have characters reach level 40 be able to unlock mounts for lower levels. Of course I can see issues on the PvP of this being unfair so I think this could only be fairly done on PVE servers (but of course then that wouldn't be fair to those that play on PvP servers.. Also the mounts could be disabled in battlegrounds PvP until level 40 to be far to first time low level gamers. That is the first problem I see. The second problem is for low level classes like Hunters, Druids and Shaman as part of the class highlights for each of those classes focuses around speed boost prior to getting mounts at 40.
So personally as much as I would love to see mounts available (after level 10 for vet players) I don't see how it could be fairly done.
Another thought is to offer lower levels mounts but with reduced mount speed. If maybe you had a 15% mount at say 10, at 20 you picked up maybe a 25% mount and then a 45% at 30. This way classes like Druids, Shaman and Hunters would still have the slight class edge that their abilities grant them at the lower levels.
Level 1-9 - OMG is it really that hard to walk around Elwynn for the first hour of your characters life?
Level 10-19 15% mounts for 1 gold and 4 gold for the training.
Level 20-29 25% mounts for 5 gold and 15 for the training.
Level 30-39 45% mounts for 15 gold and 45 for the training.
Level 40 onwards would stay the same.
Just a thought. I hated running around 30-39 with my main (a druid with 40% travel form) and besides one other character I usually reroll alts once I get into that 30ish run around Azeroth mode.
Then again I hate griffin rides. To me they should be optional (at least on PVE servers) I can see why you don't want people having nearly instant travel between any FP in the world on PVP servers but on PVE servers it makes no sense.

It makes perfect sense. If Blizzard allowed players to instantly zap from location to location it would allow players to complete content that much faster. The speed bumps are there to slow players down and extend time it takes to finish content. Imagine being able to fly instant from on side of the world to the other. It would allow players to basically be anywhere quickly and therefore complete quests in minutes that were intended to take an hour or two.
I'm sure there's plenty of reasons for players NOT getting mounts until level 40. This has most likely to do with game balance (especially in the starter zones). If a player could buy a mount at, say, level 1, 10 or 20 for that matter, it would give him/her advantages in forms of getting to certain mobs/herb spawns/ore veins/etc, etc... before all the other players and in that way ruin other players' game experience through "stealing" and so on. I am aware that this can easily be done already by recklessly storming through "noob" areas with a higher level character, but that's another story. Yes, some sort of speed increase for all classes at earlier levels would be nice as some sort of "compensation" for hitting level 60/70 on your main character, but I doubt it's going to happen.
EDIT: ...and then there's the PvP servers / battleground issues, of course.

I'd love to mount up at lvl.1, it would make levelling more pleasant. But only for people with at least one maxed out character.

that's Blizzards fault. There should more to look forward to then getting a stupid mount. The "iconic" feeling could be brought in other ways.
