it's probably sent from somewhere else and loaded with the next big global virus that'll shut down the internet, and it'll be all your fault for quitting wow.

Aggressive marketing. Not a show of desperation, but of having a smart marketing team.

I just got a coupon for a free milkshake at Chick-fil-a. They must be so desperate to send coupons in the mail.  Oh wait marketing lol.

No, they just can afford it instead of sending you a mail.
It's one of the best types of marketing apart from word of mouth advertising and viral advertising.

So, nope nope, nothing desperate, just rich enough.

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Its not called being desprate its called smart marketing. they send it out to anyone that has a WoW account(as far as i know) and make them think there getting a great deal. Im sure many games would do the same thing if they had the money to do it. stop trolling it doesnt help ya that much.

How about unbanning accounts 6 months after they  were perma-banned for account sharing and closed?  Does that raise any flags that WoW might be losing subscriptions?  Especially when in the email that they are reinstating the account they still state that you broke the rules and that you have been changed to a final warning.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

And kudos to the LOTRO quickjab.. I really believe that if someone has:

a)Not really played an MMO before

b)Played WoW and likes it, but wonders if there could be more?

Then they should try out LOTRO.  If there was no WOW, LOTRO would be the WOW :)

Your argument would be good if LOTRO actually did have more then wow.  But for all intents and purposes it does not.  There are a few differences of course, but there is nothing groundbreaking in LOTRO at all.  The crafting is crap like wow.  The gameplay is just like wow.  No, pvp but monster play which is close enough.  Raids.  Smaller dungeons.  It's all the same.  Just a different setting.

I should clarify.. my B) should read:

B)Played WoW, likes it, and wonders if there is something similar, but newer =P

They aren't desperate because they haven't sent me a free 30 day trail to come back and play.

the only sign that i need is if wow has merged any servers, have they? nope

its funny, people have been saying wow is losing subs for quite some time and yet there is still no proof of that to this day, only speculation.

sure they probably are slowly losing subs, it is to be expected with a 2 1/2 year old game but i know it cant be all that much since they have not merged one server, at least not any of the US servers, not sure about the others.

Indeed Blizzard is starting to become desperate. They have no idea what to do with the kabillion dollars they earned with selling WoW. And the worste thing is, with Starcraft 2 coming up there will be even more kabillions of dollars streaming into their bank account.

Soon, they will not just send you the game, they will also send you a complete computer to make sure you can actually play it.

  • psyconiuspsyconius Member Posts: 272

Yeah.. it isn't so much a question of being desperate, but as to how bored Blizzard becomes having so much money..  Not that I don't respect starcraft and diablo... but Blizzard could make a game that simulates standing in line at the DMV and it would sell a million copies :/

ye like everyone says, it's called marketing, no biggy

I'm thinking blizzard got some nice moves up their sleeves come AoC and especially WAR coz even tho none of those games will be even remotely close to 8mil subs, losing 500k-1mil subs or so is never fun

I dont play WoW myself, but it's gonna be sweet to see blizz bring out the big guns.

Yes, Blizzard is desperate.  With a paltry $1b a year income from WoW, they are obviously seriously hurting for money.  They are quaking in their boots, and are bleeding cash now in a futile attempt to make up for that initial $30m investment.  WoW turned out to be the biggest failure ever for Blizzard, and one of the biggest failed MMO's in history.  The company's future is in serious jeopardy.

ROFL you win this thread lol.

I dont play WoW, never did never will (just not my thing) but god to think people are looking so deep into what Blizzard does to make up "WoW is dying" threads is ridiculous. Like it or not WoW is the behemoth of the genre and even if LoTR/WAR/AoC get 2m subs by Q1 08 WoW will keep going. Its hard to MMOs to die off (jesus just look at Dark and Light) and i doubt WoW will be out of the picture anytime soon. Blizzard is smart, and sending people their product is a good way to market yourself.

Game is like a single player game you get what the game gives you .

You have no controll on nothing in the game just like every mmo out today.

Now when we start puting stats where we want and wear what we want do what we want then the games may be diff.

copying a cd and sending it to people costs blizzard close to nothing, so why not do it

If Blizzard was desperate then they wouldn't be sending out BC disks to people. What they would do is, create a brand new game engine that's superior to the engine used for WoW in every way and create a brand new MMO. Then they would still have millions playing WoW and a lot of those people would probably have an account for the new game as well. People who got tired of  WoW would at least be curious about what Blizzard would do if they created their own engine and put out a game that didn't copy the EQ mold.

That's really what they should be doing whether they're desperate or not. They finally made a Starcraft 2 and I'm sure a lot of people would have liked to have seen that be Blizzard's next MMORPG instead of making it another RTS game. But now that they have finished Starcraft 2, I think that they need to focus on creating a new MMO game engine and put out a new MMO. It's better that they start now instead of waiting until WoW's popularity fades. It may not be anytime soon, but eventually WoW's popularity will fade because there will be something that comes along that captures everyone's interest and makes them forget about WoW. Sort of like when Nintendo dominated the console market for several years and then the Playstation came out and later on the X-Box and all of a sudden Nintendo found themselves a distant third. They've made a strong comeback with the Wii but they obviously took their success for granted for a while and paid the price. Blizzard shouldn't take the success of WoW for granted. If they want to continue to be on top then they need to continue to move foward and develop the next great MMO instead of riding the wave of WoW.
