My relationship with WoW is like my relationship with my girlfriend

It's a love/hate thing.

I've quit WoW three times.. maybe four... I'm still waiting for the game that will allow me to leave it behind for good.

I want to find something more fulfilling but every time I think I see the "perfect one" it turns out even worse then the one I've got and I eventually go back.  The good features make others pale by comparison, but  the lack of depth drives me nuts!

WoW has changed the whole genre, a few things for the better, but lots of things for the worse.  I hate WoW for having nothing to do but grind...... I want freestanding player housing, a crafting system that is an entire game in itself, player ships and an ocean to explore....   I want more classes....  more freedom.....

But the industry is all drooling over WoW's immense success so they just try to carbon copy Blizz's recipe instead of making us a game with depth.

The worst part is, after each new release turns out to be no better and lets me down.... I go back to WoW because if I'm going to play a game with no depth I'm at least going to play the BEST game with no depth!!!!

If my girlfriend were dating 8 million other people, there would be no love in our love/hate relationship.

I would sooner play no MMO than WoW; something which I've been doing for the last 7 months. MMO gaming can be an expensive habit, and if the game isn't worth your time, it certainly isn't worth your money.

lol MMO's can be expensive? Thats the cheapest entertainment around counting the comptuer off the equation. Still you can have a cheapo computer that runs WoW or any other low graphics mmo very easily.

14.99$ for a popcorn and a movie that lasts one hour and a half or 14.99$ for a month of gameplay... c'mon... whats cheaper...

Has for the OP... yeah I have the same feeling with WoW. What I miss the most was the open world pvp pre-honor and pre-battlegrounds. It keeps getting uglier and uglier every patches... grinding ... factions...  I bet I would have been very happy in DAoC.

Honestly, I don't think it's that hard to understand.  People log an insane number of hours playing these MMORPG's.  It makes perfect sense that you eventually grow tired and bored and want something new.  It makes perfect sense that you'll become increasingly dissatisfied with the game.

The addictive nature of the gameplay contributes to this behavior.  There are very few things in life that are as simple as a videogame.  In WOW, you know exactly what you need to do to get the next reward.  There are quite a lot of people who feel really blah about WOW, but keep playing because of the positive reinforcement.

If you invested a healthy amount of time into this game, and balanced it with other games as well as other aspects of your life, it would be a totally different situation.

You can even extend the analogy into relationships.  WOW and other MMORPG's are like girlfriends who are good for a while, but lack the depth to really inspire a commitment.  You'll eventually grow bored and start look at other options.

So let's say someone has played WoW for 2 years running. That's roughly $60 for WoW plus BC, and $359.76 for the subscription totaling up to $419.76. What's cheaper? 2 words my friend.........Guild Wars. Sorry just had to be said.

We're all Geniuses. Most of us just don't know it.

But you have to admit that 419.76$ for 2 years of entertainment is still very cheap. But I know... I asked for it... good old GW.

Yeah, WoW is way better than a girlfriend, except when it comes to sex, then you need a girlfriend for that.

Yeah I'm like this with Everquest 1. Its what brought me to the genre i just think the grind to max level is dull with everything to do in the game now is at max level.
I want to find something more fulfilling but every time I think I see the "perfect one" it turns out even worse then the one I've got and I eventually go back.  The good features make others pale by comparison, but  the lack of depth drives me nuts!

Now i don't see where you see that WoW changed the genre. If anything it just made the genre greedy and they put out crappy games to try and be like WoW. WoW had nothing new in the game that wasn't already in another MMO. And EQ2 already had the quest system first seeing as it was released first.
But the industry is all drooling over WoW's immense success so they just try to carbon copy Blizz's recipe instead of making us a game with depth.
Agreed, but IMO WoW success is Asian based. With the Asian countries loving warcraft its not uncommon to see them loving WoW. And seeing as they have to pay more to play then us because of time cards Blizzard is making a killing off those countries. US has 1.5 to 2 million subs last time i checked and the asian comunitty have 3.5 - 4 million players.

I don't know but it sounds like WoW is your first MMO you enjoyed. Unfortunetly that curse will never leave you. I still try and go back to EQ now and then knowin its going no where.

If I were thinking economically, I would rather spend $15 a month on WoW than on a girlfriend, but honestly what girl only makes you spend $15 a month.  Weighing the price verses how much I care, WoW wins.

    But I was thinking...

If your relationship with WoW is like a relationship with a girlfriend then wouldn't it be fair to call people who pay for other MMOs on the side while still paying for WoW, MMO players.

     WoW that was corny.

    ^^^^ And so was that.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

That doesn't work 'cause your girlfriend usually steals your (better) computer to play WoW and since she's always logged on you never have sex so you lose both...

She does, and we do.  =)  That doesnt change my love/hate relationship with either!

She has also played EQ2 (she liked it more then I did), Vanguard (she hated it more then I did), CoV (we both hated it), and a tiny taste of L2.  We are currently back to playing WoW together with a bunch of our old WoW buddies... yet again.

You have pretty much described my relationship with City of Heroes/Villains as well. I played it from early Beta through Feb of 2005 (about 1 year). Then I quit, having been bored out of my skull for  months by the repetitiveness. I played SWG but they CU'ed and then NGE'ed that, and by the time I quit SWG in Nov 2005 and had tried and not liked other games, I just went back to COH. It's shallow and repetitive, but it's got a damn good combat engine and it's easy to group up and so on. I played COH again for another year, from Nov 05 to 06. I started getting bored in late summer... tried Ryzom, but the company went bankrupt and my guild disbanded so I quit that. Tried Vanguard, GW, other games... and here I am with no MMOs to play (having quit them all.

And just this week I've been toying with going back to COH/V for the third time. In fact, I'd be installing the patches/updates for it right now if not for the fact that I am about to move across country in 2 weeks, and going to be without my computer for half a month -- thus making it rather silly to subscribe until after that's all over with. But my guess is in late August I will probably re-up COH yet again... even though a large part of me rally doesn't want to. There is just nothing else out there that I want to play.

And what makes it doubly or triply annoying is, there isn't anything on the horizon that looks interesting either. I'd been keeping an eye on Hero's Journey for a wihle but so far that looks like vaporware... and most of the other games coming out just do not appeal... So I have the feeling I am going to be stuck like you are with WOW, going back to COH, giving up, going back, giving up, even more than I already have. COH has no depth, but like you say of WOW (that's one I have not tried, for reasons I won't go into here), it's a GOOD game without depth.. whereas most of the others have no depth and are BAD games.

To the OP: You described you are wanting things in MMORPG only one game had - so it seems like you are SWG refugee, like me. Pre-CU, those were the good times!

When was the last time you played EQ2?  TONS of things have been added and changed since launch, and I actually feel it rivals WoW in terms of quality and fun now.  Again, one persons opinion who managed to pull himself off of the WoW bandwagon.

For instance: crafting is a minigame and not just a matter of waiting down a timer as the item is made.  PvP is balanced for the end game (though it makes leveling up on a pvp server frustrating early on depending on class).  The raids are not the 6-10 hour snoozefests like they are in EQ1 and WoW either.  Oh, and you have to love their introduction to raiding through the guild quests!  Lastly, there is no worrying about using the same 1 or 2 specs as everyone else.  With 100 AAs to choose from, and a ton of classes, you can actually feel unique for a change.

I am about to play Everquest 2 the original, i am really looking forward to it as the reviews are very good and i did play it for about a month a couple of years ago  (due to issues i had to stop playing it) now i have several mates willing to play EQ2 and it should be good, why dont you play EQ2 in my opinion it has to be better than WoW ( i have also played WoW for like over a year)

I reckon Everquest 2 is the solution of breaking free of WoW, in WoW you must get bored sometime or other..

Im pretty sure that is how most people feel about world of warcraft.  You want to play a new game, but you want it to be a better WoW.  So, I know how you feel it sucks.  I honestly cant wait to quit WoW myself for a better WoW

What we all need is a sandbox MMORPG.  I can guarantee you that won't be getting boring anytime soon.  However there are few titles on the horizon that fit this description.  Eve is a great game but has some flaws that for many are impossible to get over.  Those of us that are really hungry for a new game need to band together and help change the industry.  Maybe one day we will all be playing in a virtual world where things are the way they should be......in that we as players control the face of the terrain and the world itself.  Until players are allowed to be the primary driving force for in game content, we will always be sorely dissapointed with the mainstream.

The problem is like you guys mentioned developers are just feeding you regular content so you keep paying.  It really isn't a game (World of Warcraft) if you think about it.  It is more like a trail of cookies that you follow until you run out of cookies to eat.  Then you realize there is nothing left to do.  WoW is only a grind because a grind is what keeps subscriptions active.

The great thing about the sandbox style world though is that also keeps subscriptions active, but it keeps them active for a different reason.  It keeps them active because the players have a vested interest in the world.  It is their world and they shape it in their own image.  Trust me when I say we can tell an infinitely more epic story with these tools than any developer can.

Sounds like you want pre-cu SWG. It had all those things (well, except the ships on the ocean, but it had space ships)

For me, SWG was my first mmo, it was what brought me into the genre, and I have been looking for a good replacement ever since. I've played tons of others (WoW, WISH, Roma Victor, EQII, UO, AO, Horizons, and I am forgetting a few as well) and other than WISH, which was cancelled before going gold, none of them gave me the fun that I had in the good ole days of SWG. You are lucky in that you can go back to the game that got you to MMO's, and relive some of your fun.

Until some company has the balls to make a game with only adults in mind (sorry AOC isn't going to be it) we will always have these lame ass games you see now, because kids want easy and fast, so they can say "I Pwnd you!"

I love how people KNOW ALL about a game before it's even available...
