Hi, Ive played Anarchy Online, Astonia3, Dark Age of Camelot, and now im playing the old Ultima Online <i like it, because its old-school RPG >
Well i always wanted to play AC2, but.....hell i dont know.............Is this game good? good enough to leave my beloved UO? I wanna know all details ´bout AC2, is t true that the world changes monthly? <cuz thats new for me>. Thanks, convince me to play this game
Comments
Uh the question is why not? It's free a free trial with no credit card required.
Though if your more fan of the "old school," AC1 would probably be better for you. Sadly AC1 doesn't have a free trial you would have to spend $12.95 to play it for month. In my opinion AC1 is better in almost every way except graphicaly but don't get me wrong AC2 is still a good game that's worth a try.
All I can say is, I like AC2
You heard right, the world does change every month. We're not talking sweeping changes, but new content (Quests, story progressions, etc.) is added each month. Each story Arc lasts about 10 months. As Real World Northern Hemisphere winter approaches, the ground begins to get covered in snow on Osteth (the lvl 1-15 continent, the one whos climate is normally most like the US NE), and as Spring sets in, the snow melts away (AC1 also does this).
There is a unique "Heros of Dereth" system after level 45, and the only way to level past 50 is to become a Hero. Heros get new skills and can use special "Hero Only" loot that requires higher Arcane Lore to use better items. The much anticipated New Crafting system is being put in this month, and from what I hear it's going to be fantastic, and a lot of people are looking forward to it.
But the best advice is to install it and give it a whirl. I play on Thistledown as Simb Lackus, so if you ever need a hand, give me a /tell
Definately give it a try. As others have said, what have you got to lose? 14 days Free is a nice thing.
Me, I've been playing since release and have enjoyed every minute of it. Unforutnately it was released with quite a few problems but Turbine has since improved the game greatly over what it used to be. Getting Microsoft out of the picture is the best thing that has happened to the game.
Just to give you an idea, in the past I have played UO, EQ, DAoC, SWG, FFXI, and CoH and this is the game I keep on coming back to. Though UO was the MMORPG I played the longest, for about 2 after release, AC2 is soon going to be beating that record for me. The developers really do listen to the players' input when it comes to the game and I don't think I've seen so much effort go into an MMORPG's developement after release. Their new crafting system, being released on Wednesday, is a testament to that.
I have downloaded the free trial and i'm currently enjoying playing it. It looks really nice and if you like the idea of a skills based system like UO, rather than just levels, then give it a try. Unlike UO, you won't be able to craft everything in game, or own a house (although most mmorpgs seem to be moving away from that now). I've also played DAoC, EQ, UO, CoH, SWG, Horizons, and others. The only problems with the game are the lack of a massive community, completely empty towns (even empty of npcs unfortunately) and the avatars don't live up to the graphics of the scenery. Plus points are the skills system and the questing system.
AC2 reminds me alot of Horizons, but looks better, and if it had a bigger community and a more RPG environment i would play forever.

Housing is also a long range goal - although goals change.
As to crafting everything . . .
You can do that - just do't plan to get much else done; and even if you become the dreaded 'omni crafter' you will either have to level up some (to obtain your own butchered traits) or buy trait from another person. If you are going to buy one thing, you might as well buy many; and specialize in the one or two things that give you greatest pleasure (or in greatest demand).
Also, as someone else mentioned, the free trial requires no #CC - not many games do that; and you can easily convert your free account to full membership (no having to start over with a new account).
I have to make another Hotmail account or something... it says my 15 days free trail is already used. . .
Odd...
What will he do next?
Turbine is in the process of taking over the billing system from Microsoft. For now, if you create a Hotmail account to use with the free trial then you must keep that Hotmail account active in case you decide you'd like to subscribe. Some people have had problems with their AC2 logins when the Hotmail account they use for AC2 becomes 'inactive.'
Though apparently there are ways that this problem can be solved, it's much much easier to avoid them entirely. Hopefully the billing transfer will be completed this summer and this will become a thing of the past.
Someone mentioned housing, to be honest, I've played other mmorpgs, housing in SWG ended up being just storage (remember that chest from Diablo II, well that's about as accurate a description of housing in SWG could be), housing in DAoC ended up being trophy display and a place for your guild to gather, one good thing about housing in SWG and DAoC though was that you could use em as shops with vendor. Other than that I love AC2, it's a very FUN game, it may not be the best in one particular field but the overall experience is, to me, better than the other mmorpgs I've played. Oh and btw, NPC vendors for your crafted items are planned for release by October/November 2004.
Hi all,
I've just spent 2 days downloading the trial, however when i come to install it asks for a CD key? I didnt get one, i didnt get any email when i signed in during the install either, any advice?

yes! try it! it still is the best MMORPG out there!
Yes, definately try it. There have been a lot of new players lately asking how they missed it. It had a rough time starting off, but is now a great game
P.S. They are completely replacing the crappy crafting system that we have had since launch today. The new system looks great and lots of people are excited. It probably means you'll get lots of free armor and weapons also
This is the second time I've downloaded Asheron's Call 2 and it's asking me to put the serial number in.
Yes I'm double clicking on the "FREE trial", yes I've made several different Hotmail accounts to sign in... it just doesn't like me.
Is anyone else having this annoying issue?
What will he do next?
Just been playing for an hour and must say, first impressions are not good. Yeah there's great graphics, nice sound, good quests, but what on earth were they thinking of when they wrote that UI?
You cant move + resize most of the windows, the examine box wont close half the time, no way to change fonts in chat window, no tabs, it's just messy. The windows you are forced to keep open take up far too much screen space and cannot be moved
IT's a shame, since the UI has been woefully neglected by the developers and since this as important as the game world when it comes to playing then i cant see me getting past 1 day of play with this UI let alone the 2 week trial

AC2 is the most underappreciated mmorpg on the market. It has superb gameplay once you realize how much quest and content driven the gameplay really is. The crafting just got a big overhaul today and it simply is amazing! The graphics still top notch after two years and I experience no lag whatsoever.
The community is very nice and people are helpful. I would say this is one of the best mmorpg I have played and I have tried it all. Lots of dungeons, loot and treasures to be found. Definitely try it, very very nice game!
I'm sure the game's content is very nice indeed, however if you have to grapple with such a dreadfull UI to get to play any of it then it's pretty much counter-productive. Also, the EU serers have like < 100 people on each one, that's just crazy, hardly a good sign for a thriving community
If they changed the UI i'd certainly give it another go, I liked what I saw, but not enough to put up with such a dreadfull interface.

You don't like AC2's UI? Geez picky aren't we. I find it to be pretty good especially coming from AC1.
lol, I don't think i'm particulary picky, just find it the most annoying UI i've used in any mmorpg, i mean, why oh why are there fixed obtrusive windows on there you just cannot move?? I thought perhaps i was missing something until i googled around and found 100's of other people with the same issue with the bad UI.
If they just let you move + close any window on the screen i'd be happy, but as it is, being forced to have them open and in the positions they are in, and being so big, taking up so much screen space, even at 1280x1024 isn't acceptible.

Maybye I just caught it on a bad day, but that examine window just wouldnt close about 30% of the time for me, really annoyed me taht did. And how does mouselook work on the thing? It said button2 was mouselook, so in a DAoC style i expected to keep finger on right mouse and get mouselook, but that didnt work. so i tried picking the DAOC style config, still the same
and just stuff like not being ablet o choose the font as the default i thought was way too big
and no way to do a /who to find users
and the fact there were only about 30 people on the server )

I've never had an issue with the examine window. Click the "x" and it's gone till you right click the mouse or hit the hotkey for it.
I assigned mouselook to the mousewheel click. Click it once, it's on. Click again and it's off. The only thing that annoyed me about it (though I'm used to it set that way now and cant imagine using it any other way) is that right mouse is hardcoded as "examine" and can't be changed.
Font size is adjustable on a per window basis under the "Options->Chat" tab.
"/who" is "/friend status" in AC2, or you can create an alias "/alias ;who /friend status" (or ;fs if your a lazy typer like me )
If there were only 30 ppl, you were probably on the PK server, the "normal" servers hardly ever drop below 200 minimum. PK servers/games usually have much lower populations for one reason or another.
