3rd time is a charm, but getting lag >.<

I'm trying Eve for the 3rd time, and this time I'm actually enjoying it.

The only problem is that I'm getting lag spikes every once in a while.. my screen just freezes for a second or two.

I have a 2.4 gig processor, 1 gig of ram, and a 256meg geforce fx 5500.

I've looked in the graphics options but there isn't many options for tweaking the graphics.

Does anyone have any suggestions for improving my system performance?

Erm... interesting Nick you have there:p

    @topic:
Lucky you if it happens just for one or two seconds. Also most options to (really) tweak the graphics are not in the menu, at least by default.

    Also.

Does this happen everywhere you are or just in certain solar systems? Are you doing any specific task, or will is it random (at last as far as you can tell). Are there over 100 people in local when it happens, or does this occur in nearly empty systems too? Try to give as much info as possible, then there is a better chance to see what may be wrong, though don't count on a possible solution. You may have to live with those lagspikes.

Sounds a bit like a firewall is interfearing. Also that graphics card is a bit old.

Biggest Best thing you can do to improve client side performance:

Go to the EVECACHESettings folder  (usually found under my documents now)

    Find:  prefs.ini

In there is a line for cache size (usually lists at 84k)

Set this value to HALF your ram size...

this will drastically improve eve's performance on systems with good ammts of ram.

NOTE: If your system has 512mb of RAM or less be careful... you probably won't want to go with half your ram... more like 1/3.....  And on a 256mb machine don't mess with it at all.  (Though you really seriously  need to think about upgrading if your gaming rig only has 256mb of Ram).

There are some other nice tweaks but I can't remember all of them at the moment and don't feel like looking them up :)

I don't know but when reading on the official forum it seems that there are alot more lag and unscheduled down-times than normal (even for a patch time) and there is alot of whining about lag in general.

Ofcourse while I where playing the game I really did not noticed much lag at all, only once I can remember I had quite abit of lag and then I went through a noobsystem.

Even those few times I where in Jita I did not experience so much lag ...

Also if you run windows Vista you might want not set the value a little less than half your ram. Because if the total ram amount that EVE + Vista take will be more than your ram your computer will start swapping and that will only lower the performance.

I wouldn't assume to instruct you on your computer, but are all your drivers up to date?

There have been a few evenings Eve has had problems.  I think back on the 11th around 9pm eastern US time there was 10-30 second chat, module, and inventory lag.  I gave up logged after a half hour.

Getting away from the trade hubs like Jita and Rens, or Caldari space in general helps.  Amarr space is quiet.  100 people running missions and buying/selling in your system or nearby systems will slow the server down.

Though prolly not related to your problem, I noticed Eve and BF2142 were running like crap for me earlier in the week.   Windows XP had an update, then an update to the update.  Long ago I turned off automatic updates and check it myself so it won't kill me in the middle of a fight.  Even still,  my copy of Windows XP seems to just know there is an update, and acts like a whiny dog who wants a treat and wont obey until you update.

my personal suggestion.  +1gig of ram and upgrade to a 6600+.

well i have the exact same problem on my 2.5Ghz AMD with 2 Gigs and ATI 1900. I tried the prefs.ini tweak (set to 512 MB and even 1024 MB) but it did not solve the problem. Restarting the game client on the other hand seems to help for the next 1-2 hours.
