First off, start by reading through the 103294823798473908715230 other threads in this forum on the same topic.  Then spend the $20 for 44 days of play and decide for yourself.

Or just try the completely free, no credit card required, free trial.

I didn't elaborate there but the $20 for 44 days includes the 14 day trial.  I just don't believe that 14 days is enough time and I also believe 44 days is well worth $20.

MMMM... if you don't get enough of a feel for it after 1 trial just download another.  Email addresses are a dime a trillion nowadays.   No need to buy if you're not sure.  Get sure... then buy or don't.  If during the trial you come across things you'd LIKE to try but can't then you've alredy discovered that it's worth paying for and should buy it at that point :)

    • Eve will not hold your hand after you do the tutorial
    • Players can and will kill you everywhere, high sec space isn't safe
    • If you lose your ship and had valuable stuff in it, its gone forever
    • No direction for character development in game mechanics, you're on your own

    Best

    • Your only limit is what you want to do, just don't break the EULA
    • Solid community, just don't be a jerk to them, this goes for enemies you make too
    • You can take another players months of hard work, and steal or destroy it in a few minutes
    • You succeed or fail on your own merits, not artificial game mechanics

    Good n' bad.

    It's hardcore.. SO hardcore.
And that's both the good and the bad to be honest.
I couldn't handle it, I'm here for entertainment.. EVE is more than just entertainment.

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

This is where you go wrong I think. Eve is not a game, its another life  Flying around the universe running missions, hunting down pirates etc... its more like another job than entertainment. I have to admit though, I have played and quit 3 times now. Eve has something that keeps calling you back. You want to love it, but its just... not for me I guess. Only I wish it was kinda.

Good: Very open ended. You can do pretty much anything you want.

Bad: It's full of some of the most childish, epeen-swinging, low-life, social rejects I've ever met in an online game and the devs encourage that kind of behaviour.

Compared to games like WoW and Lotro and such... I'd say it's pretty decent.
I'm yet to find another game where I can have discussions about things like the speed of light, mass versus mass and other more 'academic' discussions.

Compared to WoW where "Uuh I like pwned you so badly ull find ur pants in the tenth century" is common....

Best thing about EVE (and perhaps the worst depending on your point of view)  There are no levels, it is a skill based game.  This allows you complete freedom to customize your character towards whatever activities you most enjoy.  You can fly large capitol ships like Battleships, Carriers, Titans..... or train to run stealth bomber runs, or tackle entire fleets to prevent them from escaping from your corp mates.

Or, a more non-violent approach, you can become a miner that  can make 100 million isk an hour, or a trader, or an inventor ...... the choice is yours....given enough time, you can do all of these things..... but that's the key, it will take time.....

EVE is not a game for those looking for instant gratification.  Those skills I mentioned?  They do not train up as you exercise them (as is common for most skill based games) they only train up in real time.  You don't even have to be playing the game to train them....

This is a huge benefit for time challenged folks like me....I can train my skills at the same pace as every other player, (I'm doing so now while I'm at work) even if they play 12 hours a day to my 3.   I can even catch up to veterans eventually, sure, not in total skills trained, but on a task by task (or ship by ship) basis there is a maximum number of skills you need to master, and once you reach it you will be on par with almost any other player in terms of competitiveness....

There are many other good and bad features about EVE...too numerous to list in one post...but this one aspect of EVE makes it unique in the MMO world. (I don't believe any other game has a real time skill system like this one)

It's fun, and can be played for a few months without a problem. But the bad is that you - as a newbie, will never be able to experience the full drama of the game unless you connect with a high power corporation or alliance. To do that will require about a year of work to bring your character/ship to a level they will respect enough to bring onboard.

As a loner, the game can only be enjoyed for a short time without becoming redundant and tired.

I think you just have to try it.  It is definately not the MMO for everyone.  The 14 day trial should give you an idea if it's for you or not.  I have cancelled and renewed my subscriptions three seperate times, and am thinking of renewing again.  When I started I played two accounts at once, and now can never decide which one I like the best so I keep renewing both every time I get back into it.  I have tried a lot of MMO's but Eve is the only one I have gone back to after cancelling my account.  That says something for the game, I am just not sure what.

Bad: Horrible skill system, god awful travel times, lag, very boring fights, and boy do I mean boring.

Good: In depth, very customizable, players control almost everything.

Personally, I couldn't get over the boring fights, lag, and insanely long travel times.

While i respect your personall opinions i would be interested to know the reason you think the skill system is as you say horrible. I personally find the skill system very good as it means i can actuall lead a normall life while leveling my charecter. As for the fights being boring i dont know what fights you ahve had but the idea that i can enter a battle and lose my expensive ship permanently is definatly exiting [and i know this because my hear is really pounding at the end].

Have you tried out Corp V Corp wars? I can tell you these can be a lot of fun. Once in the early days of my corp before RED MOON RISING we were mining in a nice 0.4 system full of Jaspet. We were largly on ower own and the only mining corp there. Then one day a small 3 man corp [we had 7 people] were as bold as brass mining OWER jaspet [] So after ahviing a quick chat with the CEO he gave permission for me and 2 others in ower battleship to politfully ask them to either stop mining or leave the system [there were minig with 2 megathrons]. In the end they said go away you dont own this bel and after a semi-strained conveersation in local my CEO gave me permission for us to attack them.

They were not fitted for fighting one Battleship let alone two so it was i admit a gank but under my orders we let there pods go. Never saw them again too.

Been playing for 2 weeks now.

This is all too true.  It is alot of learning(mostly the hardway) after tutorial.  It leaves you hanging at times.  Thank god for forums and other gaming experience..*Grins*

I like the open ended aspect of the game.  You can fly anywhere.  Do anything.  Just know there are consequences.  That is not the case in most mmo's.

The game is very open ended and there is nothing out in the MMO universe quite like it. Other games like WoW remain easy grind fests where any one can become the best on the server if you spend all your time into it, which takes all the challenge away. Eve on the other hand is more geared towards tactics and knowledge of your equipment rather than how much time you invested into play. I sadly had to quit Eve because I couldn't stAnd its anoying leveling up system. Time based games are just not fun when you start a couple years behind the rest. It makes it impossible to catch up to the top level characters no matter what you do. Basicly, if you are interested in playing, be sure you know what faction and what ship you are going to invest all your time into training, because it can sometimes take months just to learn how to pilot a worthy ship for (good) pvp combat use against the farther ahead players, and theres nothing you can do to quicken that learning time. Although it is possible to perform pvp in early stages, just don't think you can destroy a battleship in a tech 1 frigate (wait the boring long months before you can pilot a better ship).

I've played the trial 2-3 times...

I can never really decide, i like the universe and feel of it but.... you always need to be well prepared for where you go ect, if you wanna hunt some juicy pirates you have to check the space area for ship destruction ect ect. so you don't fall into a trap by some scumbag whose just there to grief you....

The game has it's good sides and i'm sorta getting close to finally just buy it, since the lack of space mmorpgs.

But i always wondered if you could ever achieve anything just by hunting pirates and in the end see if you can hunt other players... is it only possible in high tech interceptors or can large battleships muster the drill aswell?

When it comes to information, i think Eve has too much, so much it'll blow you away unless you take it piece by piece sometimes, thus you'll also have to learn about your mistakes and correct them (getting trashed because you didn't have a nos and so on)....
