I am just wondering if anyone plays MMOs on their laptops and do you ever have to worry about it overheating? I am thinking about getting one and then playing Lineage 2 on it, but I am afraid that if I leave L2 on afk in shop mode that laptop would overheat after a while even if being charged. Does anyone have any experience with laptops and MMOs that could help me out?

They overheat fast. If you do you might want to set up a fan nearby. perhaps several.
I'm sure you can custom build a gaming computer for the price of a dell laptop.
Why go with a laptop when you can just get a regular PC?
You'll probably triple your performance on a PC, and yes, they do overheat tremendously fast. Mine overheats when I'm browsing the internet and it's relatively new.
If a laptop is absolutely necessary , then why not try a game that's a little outdated, but still has good gameplay? Try Diablo 2, it has multiplayer and an option for single player. Not an MMORPG, but it has similar traits.
Im playing Lineage 2 on my laptop and it doesnt overheat too much so i can leave it afk shopping over night.
I played L2 on my current gaming laptop, one of the original Dell Inspiron's. It handles most older MMORPG's fine, but it has an AGP video card that's too outdated to handle the latest games...
That said, overheating isn't an issue, but it has 2 big fans in it to help cool it down..I just have to make sure I keep them clean, as they suck up lots of dirt....
As to why play on a laptop instead of a desktop? well, they are generally quieter when you are sitting on the sofa next to your wife "watching TV" with her..... while actually playing mmo's.... (just have to know when to say ..uh huh...)
Also, when dragged out of town on business or family vacations, great to take the laptop and keep on gaming during the slow times...

Well if you want the best quality you should build your own PC.
But I assume you don't have the knowledge. If you want to waste your money on a gaming laptop, then I have to tell you it is a "waste."
Soon your gaming laptop will be outdated and won't be able to play the latest games, but a PC is more powerful and will last longer. If you wan't a portable computer than you can just buy a LAN backpack for you PC. (to go over friends or lug it along for vacations.) But if your planning to play in a library or something, then the internet speed will probably be fairly slow, so what's the point of a laptop if your just going to play MMORPG's at home? If you need a laptop for school then I don't suggest a gaming laptop.
Dell's are also made with low quality parts so Dell can get as much of a profit as possible, so upgrading a Dell is pretty hard unless your willing to buy new parts and work in the Dell case.
And laptops may be quiet, but you can purchase quiet PC parts.
A PC is your best bet, but if your going with a gaming laptop go ahead, I just have to warn you Laptops become outdated fast, faster than PC's.
i play world war II online, star wars galaxies and counter-strike: source all the time on my laptop and never have any problems.

Well... I play WoW and LOTRO on a very expensive Dell XPS M170. After 9 months the screan fizzled and did funny things that I recognized as a graphics card problem. Took it to my technician, and he said I would have to get a new graphics card. $500 later and it works like a charm again.
The cause was over heating due to the fan and exhaust areas of the laptop not being cleaned and completely covered with dust. I should have known because the area above my keyboard got so hot you could barely touch it. I was advised to bring in the laptop to get cleaned out every 6 months now. Cost $20.
Also, don't play with the laptop directly on you legs. Put it up on a LAPINATOR or something similar to help with the airflow.

Yeah. Laptops get hot real fast. And if it doesn't have good ventilation you could possibly ruin a laptop if you block off the vents that cool the laptop. There are little platforms that you can buy that have cooling fans to cool off your laptop. You place your laptop on top of it and the fans blow up into your laptop's cooling vents. Cooling a laptop is a pretty serious thing and every owner should invest in some cooling tech. Check out the page below to see what I'm talking about:

I've found that I like gaming on my laptop a lot better these days. My other PC is a lot more powerful but I like being able to set the laptop on my (you guessed it!) lap. So I can play an MMO and watch TV at the same time.
Also, make sure your laptop has all the RAM it can use. At least 1 gig of RAM. Laptops are a bit slower than PC's and having the maximum amount of RAM helps its performance drastically.

I have only laptop and I'm doing everything on it (which means play games mostly). No problems. Some of modern laptops have great performance andare made expecially for games. And you'll never encounter any problems with that.
I have an HP and it overheats in like 10 seconds if I rev up the CPU and HD all the way
I put it on 25-50% and I have plenty of CPU to play any two games simultaeneously! ((Not kidding... like VG:SoH amd SupCom)) indefinantly

I play a large assortment of games on my Inspiron 9300, for long periods of time, and I've had no problems whatsoever. However, this might not be true for other laptops. I guess just try and see, and then take necessary cooling action should it indeed overheat.
I ve been playing mmos on my laptop for the last 3 years , eversince they came up with nvidia cards ....
I buy one laptop almost every year ,,, and i can tell you the latest laptops with intel duo procesors and latest nvidia graphic gards do not overheat at all , and will run any game beautifully,,while my old laptop with an intel pentium 4 procesor does gets so hot that you could boil an egg on it

Well I want a laptop because my computer now is used by others a lot and this laptop is going to be for personal use (ie playing games lol while doing work
). All the newer laptops right now are better than my current desktop anyway so even if I do not play games on it, it will still be worth it. Thanks for the replies
