Woke up this mourning and i had a huge hankering for some old school EQ gameplay

I love PVP im even a old school UO Player  but i woke up this mourning and said man i could really play some old school EQ gameplay, seeing different areas everywhere, and conversing with different people along my travels, there were no insta travels etc. It was just a fun game meeting new people and exploring new lands etc. Theres no game like that today, they tried it with vanguard and for some reason they got graphic horny and stopped concentrating on the rest of the game.

I wish SOE would release another old school EQ server but a perma old school server.

Weird coincidence...one of the first things I did after getting up this morning was to go onto direct2drive.com and download the 10th anniversary edition of EQ.

Its been probably...five or six years since I've played that game, but every other MMO out there right now bores the hell out of me, so I'll just let my curiosity take the helm.

I am playing the free version of shadowbane.  And it is really reminding me of EQ1.  Vast open maps.  Hardcore gameplay.  I am getting my ass handed to me but it is ok.. I am not crying in a corner.  I am still having fun.

It maks me wish I had played it in its heyday.

That's like the first time high, you can never get that fun back. I remember playing EQOA, yeah yeah i know kiddie EQ. Yet, it was pretty damn fun when I played it and I've never gotten that back. Even if I was horrible at the game it was fun, I'm looking for that old style as well.

EQOA was my first too, and I completely agree. How I miss that game...

How long has it been since you last played? After nearly three years of community posting SOE finally allowed old school players like me to have a server where we could reminiscence and enjoy the game. It was awesome, sadly it only lasted a few weeks as the raider guilds were plowing through the game to unlock the expansions. This defeated the whole purpose and I never bought SOE's excuse that they didn't anticipate raider guilds wanting to play on the server.

I don't have any issues with how people chose to play as long as they play within  the rules, its just sad that with all effort that went into getting the combine server for it to be ruined by over zealous players.

The thing that amazes me is that this topic is brought up daily (not trying to flame you or anything) I would play an EQ classic server in a heartbeat. Its insane that they don't even TRY this.. imo they could profit off this very much (thats all they give a fuck about anyway.) so why not? Is it because of no profit from expansions or they just don't want to admit EQ went to shit after luclin?

Its not about a first time high. EQ was compelling, it had depth, character, risk vs reward, consequence's, a sense of belongingness, community, interdependence and a respectable economic system that hadn't been effected by gold farmers or account power levelers. It was innovative and kept people coming back for more. MMO's are missing a lot of these elements because they don't want to fatigue players, particularly those with shorter attention spans.

Exactly. There may have been a lot of bad things that needed to be improved upon in EQ1, but there was a whole lot more good including what you stated. It was a much harder game than others are today and I have never felt the "fear factor" in other games like I did in EQ1. You couldn't see in the dark very well, which made you run into things you didn't want to. There were no maps that led you by the hand to where you needed to go, which allowed for better adventuring. I know a lot of people like things that make it easier and faster, but I don't. I would love an original EQ1 server, pre-Kunark even.

You're just scratching the surface. Did you ever lose your hard earned items in a sewing kit? This was the first of the changes that caused EQ to spiral downward, they started dumbing down the game. When you died it was costly and there was a sense of urgency to loot your corpse, not to mention if you didn't bind near by you could expect a long haul back to your corpse. This of course leads to travel, the EQ world was huge and boat rides were a luxury. It took a while before Druids and Wizards could group port,  not to mention hell levels to keep people from PLing up to max level.

It was not uncommon to be grouped in Oasis with a Barbarian who died and had to make the haul all the way back from Halas, you think any new game player would want to wait that long, we did. You earned your way in EQ and you felt as though you accomplished something, most of what you did felt worth while. Crafting was the only element that I think could have been better, but it was so enjoyable.

There are so many little nuances and details that made EQ a truly memorial game. In my opinion EQ was the best MMO out there. Its a shame Brad couldn't rekindle these formulas in Vanguard, because that was part of the appeal of waiting to play Vanguard. Verant had made an incredible game.

This  statement points to SOE's cluelessness more than anything I have heard in a long time, and there are so many other examples, but this one takes the cake. Everyone knew this was going to happen, all you had to do was visit some of the uberguild website forums. All the non uber guild players, which outnumber the guildies, were begging SOE to commit to fixed time length expansion additions to prevent uberguilds from racing thru content and destroying the aspect of a true classic server experience for all the other players. But SOE shows how stupid they are once again, by catering to uberguilds. The result was more players qutting and SOE losing more subscription fees than the uberguilds provided. The uberguilds are almost done now unlocking every expansion, and will be leaving soon themselves since that's all they care about.

EQOA was also my first game, and no game since has even come close to the feeling I got when I first slew Vox, went LFG at Highpass, or even just went exploring by myself.  What an amazing and completely underrated world.  Complete shame not enough people thought so as well.

You know guys, with a little Googling, there's no telling what kind of old-school EQ1 adventure you might turn up. *COUGH*emulator*COUGH*

Emulators are never the same as a live server. It just doesnt feel right imo. SOE already seen what a pre luclan server can do, it will be booming, when i first logged into the progression server when it first started, there must of been 400 players in each area, it brought back great memories, the graphics were crap but with a game like EQ you dont even think about the graphics twice. Thats the problem developers these days concentrate more time in graphics then actual game play. I want a pre luclan EQ back SOE saw this can be successful so why are they taking so long doing it?!

Speaking of boat rides, I would love when the boat "crashed" and you had to swim you way to an island and wait for another one to come along. (This happened quite often in beta. The boat would spin in circles and then you were suddenly in the ocean). This may be frustrating for newer players but it was something we accepted as a risk of easier travel.

This is the most compelling statement about EQ1 that I can think of and is what is missing from current MMOs. It is too easy to earn something and though some may feel they earned there way, it was nothing compared to the work you had to do in EQ1.

Interesting how people have fond memories of EQOA. I did think they were completely different games but maybe they had more in common than I thought. I might have to try that someday.

Im about to re-sub to EQ.  Im so bored as of late.  No good MMOs out.  Been craving a good MMO fix.  Wish i could go back in time to the good ole days.  Leveling my rogue in HHK, pickpocketing the nobles.  Such good times.

I play Rubies of Eventide now, serious, give it a try. If you like Role Play, go to the RP server.. has the best community.

Just curious, I played rubies of eventide like 1 1/2 ago and the server seemed so damn dead.. like maybe 50 ppl on it max, it did seem like a really cool mmo (definitly reminded me of old EQ with a twist) how is the population now? I mean.. you say it has a great community but how many people not just the die hard players?

Yeah, everyone says that but when SOE actually comes out with the "classic" servers, they have to merge them in a few weeks.

I suspect because most people's memories of how great ancient EQ was are totally flawed and they forgot all the bad parts.
