Ok, I first off I am really looking forward to Warhammer online even though it lacks some of the features I look for in an MMO. I really feel that this is going to be a good game, and that while it won't be the game that so many homeless players here on MMORPG.com are waiting for, I believe it will please the masses and be a success.
That being said, I am growing tired of the WAR snob responses to questions posted on these forums. It seems the standard answer to any question asking about depth etc. is "This is WAR, its about WAR not about "whatever you posted asking about".
The other thing driving me nuts is all the Warhammer tabletop fans posting either that this game is nothing like the tabletop game (well.. duh.. the tabletop game is a tactics game, and this is an online RPG simply set in that world), and declaring to the world that they are superior because they are more familiar with the IP then you are.
I like the graphics, I like the proposed PvP setup, I like the IP, and I like Mythic........
While this game is (so far) missing some things I'd really like to have (such as player cities, flying mounts, and ships/naval warfare), I fear that to some degree this snotty attitude from many members of the community might be the most aggravating thing I have to put up with when I play... and make no mistake none of these things will deter me.

Don't mind them. They're only a small community of WAR followers that are tense because they aren't in beta yet, along with being sick of defending WAR as being a WoW clone. Like you said, just enjoy the game Mythic is developing and ignore those who try to ruin the experience.
Now see here.....
War a WOW clone ...I dont think so and to the op you actually should send that toward the WOW homeless on here..They grip the most! ..... Remember the saying WOW = Waiting On Warhammer!
(For history lesson for those who dont know)... Warhammer was out way before Wow was even thought of.
No Clone here!
Don't worry about them, after a couple of months of real advertising pre-launch the majority of players in WAR will probably never have heard of the tabletop game. The pnp-RPG is better than the tabletop anyway, and likely to be a better source of lore and stories for the MMORPG anyway; the tabletop give the iconic units and armies people expect to see, but the pnp-rpg has the details game builders want to see.
It's funny in WoW to see "purists" talking about the wider Warcraft world and assuming people know what they are on about - and other players respond with things like "Blizzard they make another warcraft game?" / "A straergy game?; oh, I didn't know that. Is it any good?"
People can go on and on as much as they like about what is "right" or not; the day the game launches everyone else will only care if it's fun or not. Besides, what is "right" for the cannon-nuts also follows questions like which edition ... the tabletop game changed many times over the years, "lore" is as squishy there as it should be anywhere else - it's a game, if it's not fun then it needs to change. And it has, many times, so WAR will be different again, as it ought to be.
umm... nobody here said WAR is a WoW clone....... read before you reply please

It's unfortunate that some are using that argument. The problem is that they hear the developers say things like 'If you don't like war, then don't play' and they think that applies to everything in the game.
It's much like people throwing the Mythic slogan of 'War is everywhere' as a reason for FFA PvP. It's a misunderstanding that ignores many of the other things the Devs have said.
WAR is going to be focused game, make no mistake, and Mythic has said that they intend the game to concentrate on the RvR/PvP conflict. But at the same time Mythic has said that they will have Auction Houses, they will have Crafting and they will have many other features that are expected in a modern MMORPG.
If Mythic choses to leave out certain elements (like player housing or naval combat) it's because they are making a game that focuses on an evolution of the RvR concepts that they established in DAOC and they do not have unlimited time and resources. Like any development company they need to decide what where they will expend their resources and what needs the attention to get into the game to make their basic goals work.
There are rational reasons for their exclusions of certain things - like player cities. Apart from the logistical problems seen in games like SWG, WAR is about everyone fighting on the same side in an RvR conflict that encourages community cooperation and interaction. You are a soldier in an army fighting for the survival of your race, not an architect. Player-made cities could also result in competition between guilds on the same side when they should be focusing on killing the opposing side.
Simply responding that 'X isn't in the game because it doesn't focus on war' is not a legitmate response. Mythic has done an amazing job with interviews and coverage of the development of their game. The reasons are out there, you just have to take the effort to find them.
The IP is squishy. In fact, its so squishy I had to revise my entire WE army layout when the new Army Book was released. Hell, my beastmen army wasnt anything but chapter approved untill recently.
So basicly the real reason GW is making sure the IP "fits" is to make sure that mythic takes the Warhammer world where they want it to go. Their also making sure that current standing WHFB vets are not alienated when it launches, because they do make a killing on their TT game, as well as its extensions. I mean, if I where playing and I saw a black orc not bossing the littler ones around, I would be upset.
But EVERYTHING I have seen has been fantastic. Hell, the game looks so good my CS:CZ clan will be starting it on launch.
But as I said it looks so ill be starting it.
And to the op, cheers mate.
I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, The dreams in which I'm dieing are the best I've ever had.
Without having read too much details about the game , i always thought it was based upon the RPG Warhammer game , and not the Warhammer Battle game.
So have the devs stated that it is based off the 'Battle' game ?
Not that it makes any difference to me , i'll still be buying it once it releases.
The game is based on the enitre Warhammer IP, not any one thing specifically. So Mythic can pull from the PnP, the books, and the TT game. Also the game is sort of in its own little black hole of time so they can add known heroes and such from different eras and different mediums into the game.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
Dont be concerned about not knowing anything about the Warhammer IP. THe Tome OF Knowledge wil help you fill in the blanks as you play.
I played wow and didnt know anything about the warcraft IP (Well anything aside from warcraft 2) and it didnt really alter my enjoyment of the game - tho TBH i really didnt care about any of the lore stuff in that game but I was still able to get 3 60's (pre BC)
Not all of us Old Table TOp players are opposed to adding stuff to the game - so long as the IP doesn't get smashed to bits. On the other hand GW has a history of changing the IP on a whim tho so any changes to it should not come as a suprise.
You can't go anywhere on these forums without some viper tearing you a new a-hole.
Cheers.
Umm, naval Warfare is said to be in the game. Basically two NPC Ships that shoot each other, and Players on top of 'em who duke it out...sortof...
But apart from that: Flying Mounts will never make it in-game. Flying Mounts are VERY elite in Warhammer, only the best of Bosses, the strongest of the strong get to ride one, so to speak. They are really REALLY rare.
And many of the "Why aren't there Neutral Acution houses" or "Why aren't there Churches to marry" or "Why can't I wear a Tuxedo"-Questions are basically translated to: "Why doesn't WAR batantly break all prior IP restrictions to make it mainstream, like WoW?"-Questions for many Warhammer Fans, so they respond with anger...basically they fear that Mythic gets bad ideas from reading that...
Warcraft was a watered down Warhammer since it's invention (and Starcraft a watered down Warhammer 40k), and I guess many people fear that their beloved dark, grim, evil Warhammer becomes a second Warcraft in order to make it more mainstream...
Just ignore 'em, and read on one of the many WAR Fansite-Forums about every single Topic you can think of, trust me, it's already discussed to death
I hope the storyline quests set it apart from the mindless grinding of WoW.
Just wondering how long it will take to complete a storyline and whether there are enough stories to adventure in, not just 1 per char.

I think you're over-egging the pudding a little there Elgareth. Flying mounts are not entirely out of the question in the sense of "OMG NEVAR!", but, like WoW, the gameworld is being designed with the assumption that there will not be any flying mounts (certainly not on unrestricted flight paths) - this, I suspect is a more important reason that "lore", which is vary malleable.
As for "why aren't there churches to marry", how the hell does that in any way "violate Warhammer IP"? I guess the answer is that it doesn't, and you just chucked it in there without thinking. There are certainly religious structures in the Warhammer world, and I'm sure they'll be present in WAR. If people want to get a player to perform a marriage ceremony, that's up to them, same as most other MMORPGs. Thank god for no hideous tuxedos, though, that would be a horrible IP-break, it's bad enough in WoW's garish universe!
It's like Mythic likes to say: WAR is Batman!
You have the comic book Batman (classic) , the Warner Brother animated Batman (awesome), the '60 campy Batman (good for a chuckle), the Tim Burton Batman (bleah) and the new series of Batman movies (cool).
They're all Batman but each is different and unique and has its own take on the Batman IP.
WAR will be the same way, which is probably why Mythic likes using Batman as an example
you wont get flying mounts... but then again thats just wow fluff anyways so who really wants that in a war game. We want to have the ability to attack anybody at any time and not have them fly away.
Housing? no fluff.. just war.
But you dont think they will have naval combat? After the cool naval siege engines that came around for daoc and as huge and zany as the machines of war are in the warhammer IP... I would expect the naval ships to come. perhaps not at release, but we all know mythic will make additions and drastic changes to improve/balance a game. if anything we know that.
