If only Age of Conan Played like this...

I've seen quite a number of AoC vids and they appear to be the same old MMO combat with the Conan IP slapped on. I could probably be more excited about AoC if the gameplay was more like this. <sigh> Guess it'll be another ten years before an MMORPG will be able to that though....

What? Reskinned God of War 2?

Oh yea that is a good combat system but like you say its not really possable with todays technology. Yet i feel that today top of the range computers couldahdle it if that was the average for PC's. so id give it 6 years at the most.

What company is doing this game? Cause 99% of it looks just like God of War 2 and the dragon boss is like a combination of the first boss in GoW 1 and GoW 2.

THQ, Nihilistic are doing the game, http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/conan/images.html

I wouldn't want AoC a mmorpg to look like this. Its fine for a single player game. But there are huge oversized weapons in this game and that put me off straight away. There is too much weapon lighting going on in animation. True console style.

    Thanks Avery.

I don't see what you think is so amazing about that combat style and do something like that they'd just force people to do button mashing which gets old pretty damn fast.

If that's really all they were doing, then yeah. However, if the controls had a little bit more to do with timing your moves and blocks correctly, then I could see it as being as compelling as Virtua Fighter 4 or Soul Calibur 3. To be fair, mashing the same sequence of hotkeys over and over again in an MMORPG is just as boring as mindlessly mashing buttons on a control pad. The trick is to make it so that button mashers get pwn'd by those that really know and work the system.

And yes, the game looks incredibly like God of War. In the interview the guy said that they'd been playing the combat system for over a year now and that kind of gives away the fact that they're working with an outside game engine. I stand by what I said though, I'd love to see realtime, arcade combat in an MMORPG.

BTW, it's not the computers that make this kind of combat in an MMORPG impossible at the moment, it's the limit of bandwidth. If the pipes to the internet were three or four times as fat as they are, this would probably be very possible. Not that there still wouldn't be some latency, of course.

I feel you man, I was expecting something similar to that as well.  Though I havent seen the videos for conan yet to be completely let down.  Anyways I would give up the mmorpg status and play in diablo 2 settings to get gameplay like that, any idea if theres any multiplayer games like that coming out that arent mmo..

Yeah, the trailer to Conan was fairly disappointing in regards to the combat. It looked more like Phantasy Star than anything really revolutionary, with you just getting in the enemy and mashing the 5 hit combo of choice without a ton of strategy or skill, as it didn't look like there was much of a defensive system in place to go with the offense.

Probably my favorite type of Combat I've played in an online rpg has been in Monster Hunter, though there wasn't a ton of combo'n going on (Usually only 3-5 ways to attack with each weapon), you did have to dodge and block the monster attacks. Really gave the feel that you were fighting something much larger than yourself, instead of the standard Our stats vs. the enemy stats with the graphic just there for show. I know it wasn't a MMO, but it still had a very cool take on combat. Would be spiffy to take something like that and put it in a game with a grander goal than just 12 or so boss fights in 5 different stages. (Which was what the game really was at it's core.)

The game does a good job of giving a system for multiple people fighting something larger than themselves, though I doubt it would be very hot if used for something more like Human on Human. While I think it'd be cool to play an MMO with combat like SoCal or VF, it'd be hard to work for in an MMO environment as they are really made for  1v1. It wouldn't really gel if the odds weren't even, as it'd be near impossible to get any moves off with two people attacking you. Of course, they'd probably do some heavy revisions to try to make it work, but it wouldn't really be the same. Would still be better than the Auto Attack+Macro of most MMO, or the the Hack'n'slash of most Dungeon Crawlers though.

God and heroes will have combat simaler to god of war, very simaler. Especcially jumping on some ones shoulders and stabbing them in the chest or twisting their neck.

The strange thing is that all the Class previews they have shown so far talked about special abilities that you gain as you level up, none of which we've seen in melee combat. There actually IS more to it then the 6-way button mash combos.

cool video.  age of conan does have unique combat system to it.  though i do wish it had no calculations to it though. we just gotta be thankful it isnt the same ol wow combat at least.

Search for "monster hunter frontiers", it seems they actually have an mmorpg of it already in japan.

Yea, they don't show a whole lot on the defensive side, but there is!! You have to look through the right vids to find that there is strafing, jump back and probably other things that will be devensive. The only thing stopping them from adding real time blocking is lag.

The latency over the internet is exactly why this won't work.  Not until the vast majority of users have in-home fiber and gigabit connections anyway.

The entire system is twitch-based.  One little moment of lag and you're dead... it's bad enough playing the standardized MMO's, even the fastest connection speeds wouldn't be able to keep up with console-style hack and slash.  (Which is exactly why there is a niche for console games.)

That really is how all MMO's should look, how good would that be? If only. :(

  • LionexxLionexx Member UncommonPosts: 680

    Yeah that will be cool.

    Playing: Everthing
    Played: DAoC,AC2,EvE,SWG,WAR,MXO,CoX,EQ2,L2,LOTRO,SB,UO,WoW.
I have played every MMO that has ever come out.

  • LilfurbalLilfurbal Member Posts: 115

Even compared to that video, that still doesn't make the combat system of AoC look anything like other MMOs.  Actually to me it  points out more in comparison to how similar AoC is to that combat style rather than other MMOs.  So, I'm not really sure what it is you're really trying to get at.

    AoC's combat looks amazing.  :)

It's "Prince of Persia/God of War" console style button smashing in a linear and scripted game.

I can't seriously believe the op thinks that a MMO should be that scripted, linear and mindless.

On another note I will admit the combat animations are very nice and that is what MMO's should strife for in terms of combat melee animations. Everything else though would not work in a MMO.

Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:

    GW2 (+LoL and BF3)

I'm withholding judgement for AoCs combat system until I've given it a try myself.
