    Hi there.

Personally, first I'd buy another 1gb of RAM they are pretty dirt cheap at the moment, then I would try and look to buy an nVidia 8800 GTS the 320MB version. Depending on what your motherboard supports I would look lastly for a dual core chip as an upgrade.

But if i was you i'd go:

    1. another 1gb of ram

    2. An 8800 GTS 320mb if not an 8600 GTS

    3. possible chip upgrade to dual core.

I have not read much about the new ATI cards but you should look them up. They are rather cheap, and supports DirectX10 wich you really should have if you are planning to upgrade your computer for conan.  The ATI cards  are all at 512mb and should be better then the 8800 cards with 320mb.

Also some more RAM would not hur in your case. But i would wait to upgrade the processor. AMD is going to release a new motherboard in the end of the year. And with that new processors. I think you'll manage conan with your current one, unless you plan to multitask.

Edit: it's the 2900 series of ati cards i'm talking about.

Unfortunately your CPU doesn't meet minimum specs. That may change by October, specs for beta are usually higher then launch specs. Your 9800 isn't the best but it meets minimum specs, and I doubt they will drop below 256 mb on the graphics. I'd suggest an upgrade to both. You may have to change motherboards to do it.

You probably want at least another gig of Ram. As for the X1650Pro, thats the card I have and I can run VG and many others in High performance mode. Also the 1650Pro can be overclocked, can get around 650 MHZ on the GPU and around 600MHZ  on the graphics memory. Its a good card to me andthe cost is not bad.

why 320.? You can get a 8800 GTS 640MB for under $350. Getting a 320MB video card for this game is a complete waste of cash. I've heard from Funcom developers in various interviews I've read that you'll need a minumum of 512 to avoid occasional client side lag. If you plan to pvp it will be absolutely essential for big fights.

Get a pair of 1GB DDR2's and sell the 512's on ebay. It's nearly twice as fast that way. 2 sticks, remember it. Using 4 sticks doubles the number of clock ticks for a column access strobe, in effect halving your memory addressing speed. Without getting too technical, using 4 sticks sucks a big one. Run some memory speed benchmark tests with 4 sticks then 2. It will open your eyes.

The only point in this post I completely agree with is #3. Dual core pwns.

Im guessing he isnt playing on really high resolutions therefore on a 17 or 19inch monitor a 320MB GTS is just the same as the 640MB as shown in various game forums - you are wrong in your assumption you will need a minimum of 512mb graphics memory, that has not been stated anywhere that its mandatory. One developer Athelan plays on his laptop that has 512mb of GPU memory and he plays at 1900 x 1200 - he just said the game plays well with this. The bigger buffer mainly comes into effect when playing at higher resolutions 16 x 10 and up.

Going from 1GB of Ram to 2GB of System Memory will help more in Client Side Lag then Video Card Memory and the price/ performance ratio is better. Hence the reason I suggest another 1GB System RAM. At the second he reaches his maximum physical memory, the game will start writing to the swap or virtual memory. Virtual RAM is hundreds of times slower than any physical RAM. As soon as it hits the spot, prepare for massive uber-lag. You can usually see this by the machine starting to write long bursts of data to the hard disk, everything slowing down to an almost halt, and occasional crashes. This is the #1 cause for heavy lag. Client Side lag can be helped by having faster hard drives too speeding up the read times.

I was taking cost into consideration more considering the guy is only 16. 8800 GTS 320MB + 1GB system RAM = same price and just the 640mb 8800 GTS.
