MYST ONLINE (URU LIVE)
My girlfriend and I both got this game. Paid $19.95 each.
We can play 'offline' but not 'online' (or 'live'). (stuck on the Uru Setup stage forever until program is not responsive.)
So... I look around and see there's a $1/month account for online play. I sign up for that on gametap but it doesn't look related to Myst at all. So did I just waste $19.95 for a game that can't be played online and $1/month for a subscription to 900 arcade games that have nothing to do with Myst at all?

I don't know that you got "ripped off" exactly. But you certainly may not have got the type of game you were looking/hoping for.

We can't even log on to see whether or not we like the game.
To add insult to injury, the gametap account can only be closed by calling them during business hours. AND... the fine print says it's $.99 for the first month and $10 every month after!
This is a rip. Don't get this game.

Reading comprehension is a key skill in life.
This is fact. It is a shame more people don't look into things before they spend cash on them. These are the same people that cause us to have warnings on toasters about not putting forks in them.
Some people.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."

Would it kill anyone to be specific?
"This is fact. It is a shame more people don't look into things before they spend cash on them. These are the same people that cause us to have warning on toasters about not putting forks in them."
Did I just read that correctly?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
Yes you did, though I should have said "warnings."
It's a grammar thing.
But yes, those people are the same sort of people. They don't think before they act; they buy things without thinking about what it is they are buying. They stick forks into toasters to pull stuff out (that's a cliche way to be electrocuted, by the by).
For the guy asking the question, this information is readily available with a quick Google search. Uru is a single player game with a multiplayer component that you can get via the Gametap service (I think, offhand memory is not 100%, but one of those online game things). You can play the single player game if you buy the box, but to play the multiplayer you have to have gametap service. They do charge one dollar for the first month and ten for each month after, but that is less than most MMOs, so I don't understand the complaint in that respect. It says you need gametap, and gametap tells you their billing plan. Like I said before, if you got this without knowing this, it is your own fault if you are unhappy with the game.
EDIT:
I don't even know why I helped you just now. You shouldn't be rude to people when asking for help. That's just...obvious, I think.
Audience + Anonymity = Jerk.

Dude, I gave you your answers. Seriously. What else do you want to know? That's all there is.
EDIT:
You might be talking about the fact that URU is nothing like the old Myst games, but then, URU is like two years old, so most people know that by now. It died and gametap ressurected it. There would be no servers at all otherwise.
There is still a puzzle component, but the game handles differently. I don't see where you are confused.

Your post didn't help at all. If you can help with the problem the OP posted about ("stuck on the Uru Setup stage forever until program is not responsive."), you will be helping. There is no helpful information on how to fix this problem anywhere, I've looked on multiple sites.
The problem isn't the subscription fee, it's the fact that we cannot access the online game we just paid for and there's no support available, which is why we posted here...but that's apparently of no use either.
I'll try the number tomorrow but was hoping to play tonight. I also tried forums on various sites, some people posted about the same issue but none of them got help. Thanks for posting something helpful, seems to be a rarity here!

Use your gametap account to login.
I don't know how much more explicit I can be. URU has a login screen. You paid for a gametap account.
Are you getting this?
Here are some links you might try if this is really too complicated.

In the course of doing your rather easy homework for you (I was bored and you annoyed me) I found out that you can actually play URU live for free right now. So I don't know what that says about you in addition to not knowing how to login, but I might actually try the game now that they have brought it back.
At any rate, that should provide you with whatever information you are lacking to log in. I was unsure from your posts what it was you didn't know, but that should be everything. You'll use a TapID to login.

I think I see the confusion here. The original URU was supposed to have an online component, but through one thing or another it fell through. I'm fairly sure that's what you bought. GameTap came along and decided to help open the online service through themselves, and that is what costs the dollar monthly.
URU is in the GameTap directory, I know. I played the trial while dabbling with GameTap's normal service. Unfortunately, I think that copy of URU you bought is single player only right now, and the working online version is through GameTap.
Correct to play the online part you need to download it through GameTap. I subscribed to check out that game. Was a pain to cancel when I got bored 2 days later.

MYST always has and will always be a crap game that sells boatloads because of a pretty box and tons of features listed on the box. I am sorry you got suckered.
P.S. I used to work for a company that produced/published MYST.
Oh, now don't go trying to spin this topic off into another debate that ultimately goes nowhere. Myst has its merits, just like any other game. It's great for a game that involves no combat, and I had a good time solving many of the puzzles. While what you say may hold true for some of the sales, many bought it because they actually enjoyed the gameplay.
In all hounesty, you really seem to have rushed into buying this thing. Calling the MMORPG people kids doesn't help either.
It's quite shocking, but when you observe these forums daily, you see a lot of people saying things, because they're terribly badly informed. In fact, they usually are not informed at all. You seem to belong to the last category.
It's pretty natural to get angry when confronted with your(multiple) own stupidity, but it's quite obvious that expressing that anger will only make matters worse.
For example, in my search for a new MMO, I've been trying to get a free trial to Neocron. However, during this search , I found out that their Paypal rights had been canceled. Which doesn't by default mean anything, but when a company scraps another company off their list, they do it for a reason. Hence, no Neocron for me.
That's what you should do too, open your eyes,do your research.
About how you can fix this issue you have now, I guess you gave the answer yourselves, call them and cancel.
Nancy (Lucas Arts) complained SWG involved too much reading and used it as 1 of her excuses to change the game. This was an example of the type of customer she was looking for!
Phos, I can help you out directly. You can private message me if you wish, or send an email to pcalexand@gmail.com
A lot of kids and teenagers read these forums, and you can expect an immature attitude from them. That is why it is better to join a more mature community if you want straight answers with no B.S.
To the rest of you, grow up. When somebody asks for help, there is no need to put them down. Help them out and don't be asshats.
Ciao
You seem to mistake forums for helpdesks. A Forum is a place where people share thoughts and opinions, hence the unbiased opinions, most of them welplaced and having hardly any immature behavior.
You can play the righteous helper of the forums, fact remains, when you post things on a forum ,you get opinions too, not just answers.
I beta'd the Myst Online Uru game, through gametap. I loved it, but had to let it go for my other games. But I will definitely go back.
Basically you go and get the Gametap service, which is a buck (99 cents) for the first month. Then, you can play the online Myst game. It's cool, you get a house to customize, an avatar that has pretty good customization, (which they say will get a lot more options soon) and can meet all sorts of people.
It IS a single player game in the fact that you go through these "puzzles" or "ages" that you have to solve by physically turning switches and activating gears and symbols. You can go to public areas to meet people to help you solve them, to have roleplay or to participate in roleplay events with employees of the game. Other players can come to your house or to your puzzle age to halp you solve them, give you clues or to outright tell you how to solve the thing.
If you bought a game box, I think you did indeed get the other retail version, not the Gametap version. I wouldn't let it damper you though, go to your gametap screen and get the Myst game through them. Log in and be blown away by the graphics. Since alot of the game is instanced, they do wonders with the graphics. If you dont have a beefy computer, the outside areas might be laggy for you. For me it was downright gorgeous. It's worth it.
As far as canceling, it does suck to have to call them, but take a lunch break and call them. That's how I canceled it. I will go back sometime..there's some interesting developments there.

I cant agree more.
This thread is amusing.
The OP is a tad hostile and impatient. When you ask for advice and help you shouldn't whine so much.
To anyone who posts on these forums and insults the MMORPG.com community, well guess what Sherlock, you are a member if you are here.
I would have quoted people, but there were too many.
I find it ironic that those of you who agree with the reading comprehension post don't actually understand the problem.
We researched the game. We bought the game. We have a gametap account. The Live portion will not update, we can go no further than that. So what I want to know from all the genius posters who think we aren't going through gametap and seem to think that we didn't do any reasearch before buying the game, what exactly about this problem are YOU not comprehending?
Oh, and forums not being here for help? Please...how many posts do you see about just talking for enjoyment and sharing ideas and stroking each others' epeens in addition to the number of posts you see asking for help, whether it be advice on what game to play or technical advice. Plenty of people come here for help, and most of the time they get it. Every now and then you come across a thread like this.
