ISO Medieval MMORPG!

MongooseMongoose Member UncommonPosts: 86

It troubles me dearly, for I have searched for awhile and found nothing. The only games I've ever seen which involve true medieval game play are RTS games which involve controlling mass armies or building cities.

My question is why has nobody every made an MMORPG that involves kingdoms and open war. A medieval game that is weapon and combat based. NOT A GAME WITH WIZARDS AND MAGIC OR MONSTERS which EVERY single MMORPG on earth that is based on a medieval setting contains. All these mmorpg games with swords have to have wands in them. And instead of fighting for land and for your country, you fight monsters and grind endlessly. I cant stand every game that has hand to hand combat having to have wizards shooting lightning bolts and fire balls.

If I could make a game I would, for I have an extreme amount of mmorpg history and I know what would make a good game. I've played at least 10 different mmorpgs and they are all basically the same.  Why not have something where if you die....you actually die. For example, in a Medieval game you can have a family, and lets say your main char, the father dies in combat, well, your gear and such would be passed down like an inheritance to your sons and then you would have to build them up to be warriors and rinse and repeat the process. Not just endless dieing without consequence. And that way if you are truly skilled and survive many battles, you can be a veteran or even considered a hero.

And all these levels, all games like these are level based. Why not start the game as a young child and grow up, and instead of levels, gain age. And threw ages aquire more responsabilities as well as different abilities and tactics. Like horse back riding or the ability to fight for the military. And even if combat does not suit you, maybe be a blacksmith and make a successful buisness in the city, or a farmer to sell crops to the kingdom or just make enough for your family to survive. A skilled hunter even, instead of fighting monsters I think shooting and hunting a deer would be much more exciting then finding endless monsters in a game to kill which takes no skill what so ever.  I mean I have thought a lot into this and when I look for a game like this, I find wizards and dragons.

And for us players who crave PVP, talk about a skill based game. Let players control different land masses and the ability to either fight for new ones or try to take control over each others. Let them set sail for new worlds and try to expand there kingdoms with each other and rule in different ways, either a democracy or a monarchy.

I know that there is not a game out there like this but if you know of one, please let me know. I'd pay 20$ a month easily for something like this, something that stands out from every other mmorpg out there and even the first mmo's were based on medieval times, thou...at the same time they too were filled with magic and monsters.  I know I'm not alone here, so if you have any negative or positive feedback please let me hear it.

It sounds good on paper, but implementing something like that would be very difficult.  I don't think the current hardware could handle massive armies with hundreds or thousands of people.  I'm not a hardware expert though.

As for the magic, LotRO rarely uses it, and it's very boring, but maybe it's not fair to compare that game with a medieval game, since it's restricted by the books and didn't have fun combat in the first place.

If you've ever read A Song of Ice and Fire series, something like that could work as a medieval MMORPG.  It's kind of medieval fantasy, and only certain main characters use magic.  It's also got famous swords that were passed down to their children.  The series actually have children too that start out young, and age as more books are released.  There's also major land and ship battles.  Damn, I better stop now, because I know it will never be an MMORPG.

A non-fantasy medieval MMORPG would be good too, but it would be subject to restrictions also.  All those history buffs out there would get pretty upset if it's not accurate.

I guess all we can do is dream until one comes out.

Iso no longer sells, You could probally find games like lineage but even they have magic.

Thats the problem, if it's iso it better be manga/anime influenced otherwise good luck on getting players.

Terrible game idea, riddled with massive problems. It would be interesting for a dozen people and take years to play. Horrible candidate for MMO gaming.

Not sure if our ISO's are the same, but my gaming back grounds defines ISO as "In Search Of"

And ianubisi , Thank you for the honest input but I feel even if it doesn't sell well, at least its not the same as everything else that sells. Just because it sells doesn't mean I want to play it, other wise I'd be playing WoW and would have never made this thread :-)

I don't think that PvP is the answer.

PvP, although appealing to a significant portion of gamers, isn't the mainstream.  You want peoples to pay monthly to keep coming.  Medieval with no fantasy can definitely work, and PvP can indeed be extremely well developped.

    - But you definitely needs PvE.  You can fight for your country in PvE.

    - It would definitely needs a historic setting IMO.  Don't create zobwagtheland, use England, France and the like, and try to be somewhat realistic...inspired by realism, not driven by it.

    - Levels and class progression works.

    - Control rather then combat should be the focus, so you have social classes, and physical classes...together they can group to control an area, to inspire fear, submission, faith or whatever else.  Thinks of a RPG approach on the usual wargames concepts.

    - "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren

And I know it would be difficult, but the PvE would be great if the enviorment was NPC enemies. Not every warrior has to be a player controlled character. Raiding outpost and taking control against NPCs beats any normal PvE. Even having a basic training to prepare for battle and recruiting for your guild/faction/whatever you wanna call it would rock.

But like I  said before, this game isn't for everyone. And just like the fantasy games, there not for me. Thats probably another reason why most games are 90% normal servers and 10% player killer for not everyone enjoys an all out blood bath.

I remember an old Microprose RPG I played back in the 80's called 'Darklands' which covered this period (Europe in the Dark Ages). The last boss mob quest was so bugged I never could finish the game, but I did enjoy it nevertheless. The artwork was inspired by the works of Albrecht Durer, and the game would switch to a turn based 2D map when combat occurred. Quite unusual.

wurm.  it has town building and junk, pvp with those towns, and a ignored magic system(that's hardly worth useing except for a very small part of it)

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

UO almost got it right, even with the over use of magic (and magical items), only because if you ever played a pre-UO:R private shard, you would find magic doesn't really come out on top (if they balanced it against tank-mages, which some have succeeded in doing), and that your best sword is only as good as your sword fighting skill (plus anatomy and tactics). :)

Basically, what you're looking for on the combat side isn't impossible. As for character progression from youth to old age, it's not impossible as some of the posters believe (as most here don't even have simple programming experience). They say it's impossible, because they never considered how to code it (if they could even figure out the basics of coding based on ADTs [hint to other posters: I won't explain what an ADT, if you already know it, then you know where I'm heading.]). As for a title that totally encaspulates your wishes, there is none to my knowledge, but I do believe a handful of MUDs have succeeded in this, but I will have to find the url's for them (many of them are *very* hard to progress in alone, so remember to be on your best behavior amongst other players on these MUDs or expect that you'll taste your first perma-death in a game... ;) ) and post them here for you.

It's single player, but its amazing in my opinion considering it was created by a team of 2. It should give you what you need, without the multiplayer though.
