In all the screen shots and videos that I've seen the graphics in Fallen Earth look thoroughly sub par. Any ideas on this, or does anyone know what engine it's being built on?

Sub par? Compared to what? And I believe it's a heavily modified unreal engine, but not sure. but I seriously cannot see where you get the graphics being sub par.
If you take a look at the screenshots on their website you can clearly see graphical improvements between the older screens and the newer ones. So it might be still a work in progress, or maybe they are finished with it by now. But it's most definitely not sub par.
Either way, i'm very pleased with the looks of this game. Can't wait to start playing
if you were to put up a 'par' onto games and how their graphics are, Fallen Earth's just keep getting better as you have said above... FE would be above any 'par' that may get set.
The game looks good enough to me. I don't expect to be wow'd by graphics in an mmo, I just want a good game experience and graphics that give me enough customization that I can set my self apart from others. From what I have seen this far, FE has what I'm looking for.
Well the graphics may be one that just might wow you. The only factor we still need is for beta or alpha testing to begin so we can truly the ingame play and graphics. Because from all the new AI NPC's and all the things they have for char customization, this game has given me a wow face because all other games have started to repeat themselves.
Let me clarify. I expected the graphics and character animations to be on par with Half Life 2 episode 1.

You want to call FE graphics sub-par, then show me the mmorpg they are inferior to.
because there is no mmorpg with Half Life 2 graphics, and won't be until server/bandwidth technology improves.
Dont even compair the graphics to WoW, cuz those just suck. They only look good because (as a 3d modeler myself) i knowthey add a slight shine to everything thus making them somehow look more appealing.
Half Life 2, as you just stated nice isnt really a game you can compair to as said before. Read Zorvans reply.
So in the long run (just stating.. thats all) theres really no game. I will though actually give you props if you can link me to a game that has better graphics though
Fallen Earth is built using the Icarus Studios RAD Tool Suite. They're basically designing their own MMO dev toolkit from the ground up (with some licensed tech built into it as well). But they needed a game to showcase the kit, so Icarus formed Falled Earth LLC to build the Fallen Earth game.
I gotta say, if they keep going the way there past media of the game/engine have shown, they should have no problem at all marketing the toolkit. Depending upon it's user friendliness, of course.
After having seen some of the newer stuff released about FE I think the only qualm I have are the animations, but I wouldn't be surprised if those were fixed too.
This is the only mmo I am looking forward to.
It's the closest thing to a fallout mmo I'll be seeing in my life time, I wouldn't care if the graphics were akin to fallout 2 at this point.
Need more postal games damnit.
Bandwidth isn't an issue in some aspects. Does it take more bandwidth to have models that have higher polygon counts? that do subsurface rendering, or utilize high dynamic range? no. It's purely based on the local machine's performance, which has greatly improved.
I'd dare say the graphics are worse than Planetside, which is from 2003, and was a MMOFPS. I remember flying over a battlefield of 80 people fighting, and my FPS would drop a bit, but I wouldn't get lag (well lower FPS is inheritly 'latency' to my eyes, but not network packet loss). I was blown away how well the servers performed for it.
But reading about how the game is built, I"ll still play it twitch style combat, factions, crafting, mutations... drool It sounds like they are doing something different yet doing it right.
The trick in Planetside and a lot of other MMOs that allow *tons* of players in a single area is that they only have a couple models to render. Everyone looks pretty much like everyone else. Whereas running into a crowded city in WoW and probably EQ2 there are more models, more textures, everyone looks differently, and you'll lag from the network sending all that data, your hdd loading everything in, then your framerate will drop once it's all rendered.
I'll reserve my opinion of EQ2 graphics until I get my motherboard repaired, but so far I'm only impressed by the character graphics themselves. The terrain and mobs in the noob isle and the little I saw of Freeport once I left the isle were pretty poor. I'm hoping the rest of the world makes a better impression.
I will be honest with you, the graphics arent nothing new and groundbreaking. heck you only have to look at the latest video to see this. When the guy gets to the shack to get the quest to kill those worms, look at the rifles on their back. The rifles kinda break the polygons and it looks goofy.
That being said what attract me to this game isnt the graphics. Heck i played Operation Flashpoint and the graphics in there look similar to the ones in FE. Yet i really like Flashpoint, graphics are kinda nice but they dont make a game! What really is gona be the main draw of this game is the gameplay and the genre for me.
The graphics look quite good. That being said, FE is in danger of having outdated graphics if they don't have any significant progress in the game's development.
And it hasn't progressed in a while: no beta, no scheduled launch date, no recent press releases or invitations to alpha or beta testing.
As much as I am looking forward to this game coming out, it seems to have all the attributes of vaporware.
Hopefully I'm wrong.
WoW graphics really arn't that great. WoW is more cartoonie then anything in its graphics.
A game that's been recently shown at, among others, GenCon and DragonCon and has regular updates and info posted is vaporware?

While I'm firmly in the Gameplay > Graphics camp, it's also 2007 and I do expect to be wowed (not WoWed) by graphics in an MMO these days. I like to explore the world and I want to find gorgeous vistas and exotic locales that make me just stop my travels and look around, maybe snap some screenshots. Eventually you reach a point where you just can't go back to EQ/AC/UO visuals even if you think they had better gameplay than the current batch of MMOs.
Granted, FE is set in an arid, barren post-Apocalyptic Arizona so plenty of bland browns there. Not sure if we'll get to see any really cool stuff simply due to the setting. It seems the graphics engine itself can crank out some quality stuff, just a matter of the individual dev team's art and design.

I was at dragoncon and the game did look quite bad. At least you really do get to aim at things though so I guess that is better.
Critique the graphics on release day; for now, they are meaningless and will change.

I'd say that the graphics from the screenshots have improved quite a bit. Also they don't test the game on high graphic settings, the lighting isn't yet properly implemented, and the foliage is all temporary until they get the flora engine running right. All in all it's going to be one complex and awesome game.
City of Heroes/Villians and FFXI. Icarus has a long way to go before they can ceompare to the quality of these two games that came out 3 or 4 years ago.
Look at the figures in FE, big heads, generic outfis, the landscape is nothing special at all (granted it's supposed to be a wasteland but it should be more appealing) and the worm the guy fights is nothing special with no special effects to intrigue me. The animations suck, watch him fire his gun or the dunebuggys suspension as it drives across the desert. It doesn't look natural. The game looks like it was made in the late 90's. Anyone can make a MMORPG now; just look at how many are out there. In this flooded market, you'd better wow me with something more that just the story setting. The story is the only thing this game has going for it.
