Just trying the 2week trial, lag?!

sakersaker Member RarePosts: 1,458
I just decided to download the trial, thought I'd see how/if things had changed since beta (was in the end  2 months of beta, horrendous unplayable lag then, I was not pleased). Only thing I've noticed so far is horendous lag! Every minute or so my character gets frozen! This at least is as I remembered the beta... Is this regular? I've got a pretty decent system, and am on cable modem, I don't think for a second that this is a issue with my system.  Thinking of deleting it already

I have a decent video card, tried lowering hard just to see if anything would change, well it didn't. No change didn't think it had anything to do with my system

Have you checked what servers you are connecting to ? The Default connects you to the European servers.

In my opinion the AC2 engine sucks. It looks good... as long as you don't try to move. It's like it was made for taking screenshots. I tried playing beta and it lagged at any graphics setting but I figured it was probably just my computer at the time, a 1.7ghz P4 / GeForce 3. However, even when I upgraded to a newer computer, a 3ghz P4 / GeForce FX 5900, the graphics still were not smooth at any graphics settings. The engine performs poorly at all levels and it has lead to me quitting two times now. AC2 itself isn't a bad game, I just can't get over the performance issues. Sorry if anyone disagrees with me but I think the AC1 engine spoiled me. Even when I first started playing AC1 on a 500ghz / Voodoo 3, I had to run the game it's lower settings but it didn't jump around and perform nearly as bad as AC2 does. I expected AC2 to be the same way when I first started playing it but I was wrong. AC2 is jumpy and slow. I'm starting to think it my be like that on any computer, even in the future, assuming Turbine doesn't do anything.

Must be your Internet Connection.. if its not that then it Sure is Your System or your "Decent" Video Card..

I agree with you Jaguar.. i have the same problem. (have a good computer) Even at VERY LOW setting it lag almost as much as Medium or High even Very high. I am on very fast cable modem too. So yes, i'm pretty confident to say that their engine is not good at all. Your computer is just fine. :D

This is NOT TRUE! There's no major lag in general (I'm not saying original poster is lying, don't know his personal case, but those "I tried it at beta (2 yrs ago) and it was lagging" posts piss me off).

There's no lag besides real lag produced by your video card or connection lag.

And it's nowhere close to BETA time. It was horrible at beta, but I used to play it normally (on very low graphics settings though) on PIII 733/Geforce3. Now on P4 2.8 I'm able dual-log on same machine and play just fine.

Thanks Zakor. It will be interesting to see how the engine performs in MEO and D&DO.

BloodOfMyths, are you running the game at lower settings or what? I mean I could play lag/jump-free if I toned down the graphics but AC2 graphics are horrendous when they are set a medium or low. I'm not really a graphics whore but since AC2 lacks a tad in game play for me, the eye candy needs to make up for it. Plus like I've said before I prefer AC1 graphics at full than AC2 at settings other than high (which is where it performance gets choppy).

    Hi Jaguar

When i was playing, the configuration tool of AC2 recommanded me to play at High. So i was like, okay to make sure i get no lag i'll put it to Medium... i was WRONG.. it was choppy. Then i tried it to Low, was still choppy, and then at Very low.. was running better but was STILL choppy. I don't get it. image

Oh yeah, when i tried to put it on High and Very High... and there was not much difference of perfomance from Very low to Very High... look like it's really their engine.

Me too, i'm not a graphics whore and here again Jaguar i have to agree with you that the game play is lacking a bit, so i was expecting to see some nice graphics, or at least lag-free.

I play with low settings. 128mb Nvidia 5700fx ultra, and I still lag. Couldn't even move with it on high which is recommended. This game isn't fun anyways. Once you hit ~18 soloing is hard, unless you like fighting the same mobs you fought at lvl 13. Crafting is so hard its insane. You have to collect trophies just to craft. I spent 4 hours trying to get a reedshark spike and never got it. Not to mention when you need an upgrade the lvl of mobs you are fighting don't drop the lvl of traits you need. No groups to be had to try to take higher lvl critters. A few changes and this could be the top mmorpg. Since there is not a high population soloing needs to be more effective. Crafting needs a major overhaul(ie. no trophies), drops need a major overhaul so you can actually get the items you need for your upgrade. Something needs to be done about the lag issue.

I've tried bringing up AC2's crappy performance over on the AC2 official tech boards. But it seems no one over there seems to notice, I wonder why. Oh I know because the only people left playing AC2 are hardcore fanbois.

It looks like this whole lag thread about the game was being posted around the same time that there were some issues coming up amongst players because of a net cable that was cut a while back, at the end of May, causing some players' internet route to the game to change. There was a post on the official Turbine game forums about it. Not sure if that was what was causing the issues but it's a possibility. I know that I have not experienced any real lag issues in game any time recently. (at least none that I haven't experienced in any other MMORPGs)

I experience very little to no lag when I play. I dont have that great of a system, I run custom graphics settings with some on high & others on low. The only time I lag is when I am running a quest with a large group and I'm pretty sure thats just on my end due to that my roommate(with a better computer) does not experience this.

One thing that improves performance is to defrag... Good idea to do after every patch.

I know a couple people who would complain about the "Lag" they were experiencing... I told them to upgrade their ram... made a world of difference, maybe some of you are on the low end of the required ram... On that note, the game really should say that it needs 512Mb RAM.... image

I didn't experience any lag during the trail.  I actually played the game for 6 months after release.  It is one of the most underated games to date.  The graphics surpass many games released after it.  The FvF + PvP were much fun also.  Many of the changes they are focused on now sound really good, but the problem (and partial reason I quit) is that some changes listed now where listed over a year ago.  The game was great, but they started playing God making major changes.  Nerf this class, buff this class....  I got tired of the phases where my character was balanced, then trash, then too good....etc.  During this time they also let people completly untrain all skills, retrain with no penalty.  This allowed people to retrain as the current best class.

    - Great terrain + maping

    - Unique races + storyline to fit

    - Descent weapon selection + /w mods

    - Great quest + epic quest /w rewards

    - Crafting system, but lacking some elements needed by communtiy for crafting to work better

    - Nice graphics, but alters based on machine running it

    * For those that experienced performance problems. RAM means alot for this game.  The easy way to test it is just using portals.  If you have enough RAM the port will take maybe 1 sec.  If not will take longer, but during that time you'll be visable and attackable by others while all you see is the portal of death...:(

*** It's really great that turbine holds the future to the game now, but I only wish they would have had the power from the start.  I'm afraid it's far to late now as the community lacks people.  If not for the shortage of players I would return to play.

    Hey Krityc,

They are planning & putting in motion new promotions for AC2 once the crafting rewrite is heavily tested. They have also made reference to an expansion. Nothing set in stone yet tho.

Hopefully the new marketing will bring life back to the game. Not that 700 people is that bad in the evening, but it certainly is lower than it used to be.

its turbines engine, and if u try playing on the american servers there is minimal lag, but apparently dawnsong gets HORRIBLE lag

  • KonarKonar Member Posts: 19

I have a great idea on how to get the server pops back up there fro yah krityc. Come back! ::::35:: That'll at least bring them up by one. And the new crafting system being put in on the 30th is much much better than what they had before. As said before, a marketing push is also in the works and has been started to some extent. If all goes well we will start to see the pop numbers rise pretty soon, especially when some people see that the game is definatetly better than some people give it credit for. Except for one class all balancing is basically over, thank god. ::::31::

I play the game on the highest settings with no lag. Of course, when you enter a zone with new art, it has to be loaded into memory. If you have not enough memory, this happens often. That's why the most important piece of hardware for AC2 performance is RAM. Go from 512MB to 1GB and notice a world of difference.

Another common cause of lag is Software sound or bad soundcards. Try turning the sound off, see if that makes a big difference.

This is an issue with the server, not everyone's PCs. I have 1gig of RAM and a Geforce FX5200 graphics card. I play on the highest setting and everything is ok, but i get occasional frame jumps, or my avatar leaps back a few frames. I wont turn down the settings, but this is obviously not a PC problem considering the numbers of mails on the subject. Devs need to patch this.

    Matt
