MMO Vet - never played AC

HocheteHochete Member CommonPosts: 1,210

I've played pretty much everything out there, with a few exceptions, especially the older MMO's which have been around for a while. The only one I have never experienced is AC. I chose the DAoC route when AC and DAoC were in their prime, which is why I guess I've never tried it out.

I'm currently bored out of my skull with nothing to play and I'm considering checking AC out. Is it worthwhile doing? What's good about it? Has it been completely ruined like oh so many other of the older MMO's? Is there PvP? Any information you guys can supply would be appreciated.

Hello. Asheron's Call is the best mmorpg ever made in my opinion. It was better in its peak years from 1999 thru 2003 or so mainly because it had many more players and not all of them were uber-high level yet.

These days, the game is still great and well worth your time, but there are buffbots on all the PvE servers that will buff pretty much anyone with full level 7 buffs that basically make even a newb like superman. Buffs in AC are very powerful, especially the level 7s which almost everyone has all of nowdays.

PvP is on the Darktide server only, and is very ruthless. There is NO safe zones at all. These days, expect to get 1 hit killed often by many level 200+ characters with nothing better to do then whack a noob.

If you play, talk to some of the veteran players. Most will talk to you if you approach them with respect and don't talk smack right off the bat. They will more then likely help you out or maybe even invite you to a guild that will help you level up so you can better compete and join them in raids and dungeon crawls, etc.

You can try it for FREE with their 14 free trial. It is located HERE

There is item drop on death as well as what can sometimes be a crippling vitae penalty which lowers all your stats by 5% for each death. The VP (vitae penalty) is worked off by acquiring more experience. VP at level 10 or so can rise as high as 40% if you keep dying too often without working off your VP. Items dropped are the most valuable of each category of items in your inventory (weps, armor, jewelry, etc). You can cover losing your most valuable items by keeping a good supply of "death items" (DI's) on hand. These items are just basically junk that has high values. So instead of selling that really high value junk you can't use, keep the lighter weight stuff that has high value so that you drop it on your corpse instead of your mighty frost sword or cool armor you found!

For good info on AC, do a google search under "Maggie the jackcat". Maggies website is packed full of useful information on everything to do with AC from quests and rewards and exactly how to do them to how to tinker your armor and weapons into very valuable hand crafted items.

AC is still a solid game and well worth checking out, especially for FREE!

Have fun and be sure you talk to some veteran players. Ask them why they have played AC for so long and I'm sure you'll get a million reasons as to why AC is still a great game.

Great response, thanks Zaxtor. So I'm guessing it'd be a bad idea for a newbie to start on a PVP server? I do want to do PVP.. Can you do any PVP at all if you're on a PVE server?

  • ElapsedElapsed Member UncommonPosts: 2,329

You can try starting on the PvP server, Darktide, but don't expect anyone to help or be nice. Also expect to die many times to people way above your level. It's probably best to start on a regular server and move to Darktide later.

Yes, there is PvP on the regular servers. You can PvP at anytime by typing /pklite

My advice, don't start playing on Verdantine unless you like playing alone, it's the deadest server.

2 forms of PVP on regular servers. And AC PVP is intense.  The first kind, which people refer to as "Going Pink" is player killer lite "PKLite" and its basically a safe way to fight without loosing items and no death penalty. The other form on regular servers, and the dark tide PVP server is known as "Going Red". And its the same PVP in the darktide server. But not only if you die can you loose items, but you get a death penalty as well. I would recommend a white server "Any other server than darktide the red server". Thus going White means, your back to normal and cannot fight anyone :-)

Hope that helps, I come from Verdatine and its a dead server so I dont recommend it. But any other questions about AC and you can PM me for I've been playing sense 2000.

so what if you die and lose items and have a death penalty? This makes PVP worth something. This is why Darktide is the best server ever made in MMO history. Go out there and die and sacrifice items and have fun. This is why PVP is intense and you get a rush out of it. Its boring if there is no consequences to it. Play Darktide and fight for your life!!!

WoW seems to be doing just fine with no penalty for death. I like PKL. I wish there was a all PKL server. I must be crazy, but I don't enjoy item drop or vitae.

  • don't worry, not missing anything. AC sucks in my opinion, crappy graphics and gameplay does not make up for them no matter whan anyone says. there's nothing that really makes this game stand out among others and it shouldn't have even reached the popularity level that it did... it's a snooze, believe me

    You're right... not.

AC has no strict classes, a monthly evolving storylines, and an open world. AC is unique and was ahead of its time.

This is your opinion from what experience? When the first thing someone mentions on a game that came out in 1999 is graphics it usually leads me to believe that they are young.  So a quick check on your profile....17yo....  I'm guessing you think UO and EQ1 have crappy graphics too..... So what was it about the gameplay you had a problem with?  Was there a problem with people being able to actually dodge your incomming arrows and spells?  Something that hasn't been done since with any success if i recall correctly. Age of Conan is actually supposed to be putting this much beloved PVP feature back in the MMO game  I really hope they can.  Is it an issue with spellcasting? I remember when it first came out and everyone had to burn through reagent and taper combinations ad infinitum until they hit the right combo... only to find they just learned poison self IV .  Now things have changed quite a bit and of course the game is showing its age, but your OPINION brings nothing to the table but vague unfounded statements that have nothing to back them up.

AC was a game way ahead of its time....all the gameplay of the game and lore is amazing. With all the new games coming out I will still play AC. Age of Conan shows some promising PVP and could match AC. Regardless I started playing AC in the end and I will finish playing AC until it dies. No loot or death penalty in PVP? You must have been raised with a golden spoon. Long live Darktide and all the AC players for sticking to there roots.

LoL, just a quick comment. I'm not so sure I agree with the AC was ahead of its time and here is why.

To be ahead of its time means everything else is moving to catch up to it eventually. MMO's are clearly de-evolving into pre-chewed, pre-set goals, safe, no community impact, no risk, bubblegum arcade games. They are NOT moving to improve the direction of the older first generation games. They share the same genre title but thats about were it ends.

Games like AC and UO were pioneers or even one of a kind. They have never been successfully advanced or even duplicated.

OP, give it a try, you have nothing to loose with a free trial. Nothing was like AC back in its prime. The scope of play makes games like WoW look like " Winnie the Pooh's Big Adventure".

Its really to bad Turbine kicked the game to the curb years ago to pursue the making and wrecking of so many other trash MMO titles. They should have just stuck with AC. These companies like SOE and Turbine are not learning anything, they just keep flinging crap at the wall hoping something will stick all thinking they are going to somehow outdo Blizzard or gobble up some of their pie by emulating the game mechanics.

There isn't anything like AC on the market.

Asheron's Call is still a great game, I've tried others and they sucked.  AC has better graphics now, Not AS GOOD as they should be, but better. I don't care i have it turned down to the lowest setting.. I usually run two accounts.

    AC:ToD

  • lol, whatever i don't like the game... so many other better options out there now. DAoC, LotRO, etc etc... not to mention the games that are about to come out like Tabula Rasa, Darkfall, AoC... just so many better things out there

Better graphics for sure, but gameplay wise, I've yet to see another MMO that can hold my attention for 4+ years.   Monthly updates and fun gameplay really  were what kept AC alive for me as long as it did.   The world was huge and seemless.  The game was ahead of its time when it first came out.

I would still love to see a similar game with 2007-8 graphics.   Not the same game, but definitely one that held true to what made AC great.

Probably some o.0 that couldn't hack it.  Go back to frostfell no0b!

    you're so right.

mmorpgs are not moving in the direction of AC or UO or any first generation MMORPG pioneers.

    they are making mindless games

  • wow, you're smart... AoC is better combat-wise than AC could've ever been, read up on your crap before you start dissing every mmo out there. i bet you're basing what you just said on WoW and the 10 other copier's out there when there are like a hundred mmo's... you truly are a noob

    LOL

Let's see.  I've played AC, AO, AA, CoH, DDO, DAoC, EVE, Guild Wars, Horizons, LOTR, Matrix , UO, WW2, and WoW.  I've also played a few text based games before Graphic MMO's came along (Defiance was the best).  I'd put Asheron's call's gameplay above all of these.

    And your still a no0b.

  • haha, you see... the funny thing is i don't really know that you played these games, and to tell you the truth i don't care... that just means you have way too much time on your hands. but i will stick by my statement that AC should just die, turbine should put their devotement to one of their other games at this point.

LOL.  Learn how to have a discussion before making rediculous statements then no0b.  I have played all of those looking for a replacement to ac in all but uo which I played before ac.  Well, your statement is an uninformed childish one at best, and should be treated as such and mocked by those who know better.  Now go play wow like the rest of the no0bs.

    Greetings,

It's been a long time since i've played AC, mostly because i played it in 2001-2003 while i was living in the US and it is to this day the best game i have ever played. The community is great, combat is fantastic(the fact that you can actually dodge projectiles is just awesome), and has the best possible skills setup and you arnt "defined" as one class through the entire game.

Norwegian here btw, been thinking about joining the AC community again for quite some time now, seeing that the new MMOs just don't have what it takes to make it as a legendary MMO. I would definetly recommend this to anyone who wants to play a game with mostly mature players, graphics shouldnt be such a concern if you want to actually PLAY this game, not just sit back and watch the gameplay, but actually interact in some humanoid way.

To any "veterans" of AC, is it really worth lvling up a new character? Cant seem to find my gamebox or the info i need to login, had a 74 BM before i left on Harvestgain. Tried Darktide to around lvl 30-40ish too see what it was like and it was awesome. But if i want to start over again ill probably make myself a Defensive archer(are they still as imba as they were? cant remember names of the skills but you had high armor and archery).

Thanks for all constructive replies, and good luck on your adventures!

  • lol wow eh? that's funny because i despise that game... but to tell you the truth i played AC back when the cap was 100 and loved the game, it got way out of hand when they took the cap into the 200's. sry if i offended you :P but i just think that for a person starting at way low lvl it wouldn't even be worth it anymore. like galaxies and many other's this game should be remembered for it's prime and be let go, that is my opinion of course.

You can get your old characters back if it's important to you. You have to contact Turbine support and you need to know your Zone name, character name, and the server you played on. Also it will cost $20 to get your old characters back, but that also includes a free month.

If you start over it is extremely easy to level up now, you should have no problems getting back to where you were.

Archers are good if not the best now. The game is much more balanced now. I have a maxed out mage and I usually get out killed by melees and archers.

Darktide is by far the most populated server, double the others. If you have any interest in PK still, you should definetly start there.

The level cap was never 100.  It was, however, 126 for a period of time.  Also, LOTRO is....terrible.   No penalty for dying.  Oh wait, YOU CAN'T EVEN DIE in that game.  I hate that game so much.
