Long story short. Got an Intel mac. apple4life. Just need to install windows to play some MMORPGs. BUT.
I heard Vista isn't worth getting yet. I assume Vista can run DX9 games though. (backwards compatible?)
But, I hate to blow $200 on XP when it will be phased out before too long.
If I get Vista, I'll wait for the next OSX update coming this fall. (The current Boot Camp for Vista is in Beta)
If I get XP, I'll start gaming now. But yah. Obsoleteness will be knocking on my door.
Thoughts from the PC peeps? XP? VIsta? or LOL AppLEZ teh SUXorsszzsz u noob?

LOL AppLEZ teh SUXorsszzsz u noob
seriously.
Personally, if I wasn't a serious gamer and/or fell for apple's anti-MS Propaganda, landing me with the choice you have to make now.... I'd wait and check out how vista is running for other mac users. I agree with you 100% that spending the money on xp right now just isn't a good idea. It's impossible to futureproof, but it is possible to gimp yourself for the future.
VISTA wont ever be worth getting imo, by the time its worth it Vienna will be released. Vista will basically be a skipped over OS and a lot of software developers wont even make drivers for Vista.
go with xp
XP, definitely. Either that, or wait for Vista to reach SP1.
Currently there would be no reason to get Vista, its buggy, slow and just plain bad for gaming.
I doubt XP will be phased out anytime soon since its still the most used OS for the PC platform, and it runs games a ton better than Vista at the moment. And vista is only really good if you have a direct X 10 g-card and a swag of direct x 10 games.
I think you should get XP and i think you can get it cheaper than 200 bucks, shop around for a bit.
XP for sure.
I have a Macbook, and XP is the best on it. I don't play many games because of the onboard graphics, but as far as stability (funny to say that in the same breath as windows) XP is the best choice between the two.
Note that current DX10 cards have a hard time running DX10 games.
I say XP, only because Vista may or may not have issues with acceleration with Parallels for the Mac, where as XP is very solid under Parallels (I've seen games played under it with no fps loss). Plus, XP is a much leaner beast so it's footprint on your HDD won't be as bad either.

I have 1 windows computer using XP, and 3 using Vista. I have no problems whatsoever with Vista, but it didn't work out of the box.
I painstakingly went through all the motions to change Vista into something I felt was usable, stable, and enjoyable. Most negative reviews are for people who expect Vista to work straight out of the box, a feat that even XP does not do very well.
I use Vista because XP64 just blows chunks in comparison. Make sure you turn off Aero, it's completely useless and the "Hog" that everybody complains about. I ensured when I got all my Hardware that it was all Vista and 64b compatible, and I've had no problems.
The choice is yours, but I went with Vista... and I'll never go back. I'd base your decision on whether or not your Apple has a DX10 compliant Graphics Card, if it does not then you have nothing to gain from either OS over the other.
...course I'm dual-booting with Ubuntu...

Thanks for the info everyone. CaesarsGhost, besides turning off Aero, what other things should be done to get VIsta "usable, stable, and enjoyable."?
XP seems to be the most popular recommendation, but if there's a way to do Vista right, I'm interested in knowing more. If its tedious to type, perhaps someone could recommend a website where they talk about tweaking Vista to make it smooth.
Keep in mind, the ONLY thing I will ever do with windows is gaming. Other programs or downloads won't fit into the stability equation.

1) Turn off Aero.
You don't need to see through the edge of the screen's transparency and rotating a 3D window has no actual purpose to date.
2) Permanently Activate XP Compatibility Mode.
this is something most people overlook. Vista has a nifty little feature called XP Compatibility Mode, it makes any program you use with it run exactly like XP. I googled abit and found some places explaining how to keep it on for all programs so it defaults to XP Mode instead of crashing in Vista.
3) Have 2 or more Gigs of memory.
I cannot stress this enough. Vista, even after a few fixes, still requires 1G to run the OS in general, 2 or more for games.
4) Go for the Gusto: 64Bit
I see no reason to use a 32bit operating system... hell, MS isn't even releasing them (32bit OSs) anymore as of next year. 64bit installs are slightly harder to find then the 32bit ones, normally Microcenter or Fry's has them. All Ultimate Editions have them.
5) Install all the updates from WinUpdate before you do any extra drivers!!!
There have been TONS of fixes for the 64b version ( I know nothing about the 32, I refuse to use it). Most of which brings the system up to spec and cleans up alot of the pipe.
6) last one: before you make the leap - Make sure your Video Card has drivers.
if you can't figure this one out you should bail on switching RIGHT NOW! Just go to the Manufacturer (ATI / nVidia) website and check... seriously... takes seconds. Make sure the drivers are 64b if you're doing that one.
Good luck. :-)

I'm guessing by your post that you've obviously never used Vista
