If I had the skills I'd personally do it, but I'm still in the beginphaseof my education. Currently working with asp.net, but not very far developed.

And as an answer, I know people that can, I also know these people get payed 45-100 Euro's per hour :P

Cool congrats w/learning ASP - I'd like to if I ever had the time, lol.

Yea, that's the problem: my entire team is working for free (donating their time) so things take longer and I have to do a lot more myself.  All things considered, however, I'm happy with what we've produced!

    I have one question:

How much will you compromise as soon as you get money to develop the game?

I mean, just look at other games(Dark and Light, Vanguard)... They were shit games, had shit features just because a huge corporation donated money to them and made them rush through the creation of the game.

How will it be like with your game... How much will you compromise when you get money in your hands?

Not asking if you will compromise or wont compromise... Because you _WILL_ compromise, im just interested in knowing how much you will compromise :)

I started developing this game because it's something that *I* want to play.  If I had cared about the money, I would've sold it to one of the few offerers I've had over the years.  I don't want to lose complete creative control, though, so I am still running the project myself, for free.  Of course, I'm not stupid - if some company offered me enough money that I wouldn't have to work again I'd sell out.  I don't see that happening, though, so I'm not too "worried" about it.

I am very stingy about the Playable Races and Main Game Mechanics.  Minor things (the max players in a party, etc.) don't bother me as much to change - mostly because I expect to change them as the game evolves to pursue 'balance'.

So, I guess the short answer to your question is: Not much.

As a side note: Horizons also made me very sad - they had all these wonderful aspirations but lost funding (and more) and had to cut the game down to the sorry thing it is today [I still think it's great though!].

EDIT: Oh yea, I'll NEVER give ANYTHING to SOE.  They've ruined enough of my favorite games, they have horrible support, they're just money-grubbers, and I hate them. /rant

Only thing i cant see in this game so far, is roleplaying.

Most MMO's today have a deep story they derive from... You have two paraphrases.

If this is not something you can work on, you wont have all the features of every MMO.

Sorry im sceptical, but you may know the situation on the last few MMO's released, and its not a great picture.

Ive always wanted to make a MMO, and i admire you for your efforts :)

Well, even if it's a pure player made game, I think it has potential and I can only wish you the best of luck on the project. The arts are pretty stunning and that's a good start.

EQ2 concepts arts sucked compared to what you have on your site so that's really a good thing!

    Keep us posted :)

Yea.  That's just a quick backstory to give you an idea of how the game world came to be.  I'm going to hire writers to make something GOOD later on.  For now, though, it's not one of my top priorities.

Thanks.  It's not really supposed to be player-made; rather, player-suggestions will actually be taken into account.  The cities, etc. will largely be player-made in a manner similar to how The Sims Online beta testers created the "cities" that persisted in the final release.

I'll let me artists know that their hard work is impressing more and more people, though! =)

UPDATE 3: Fixed menu on alatheya.com.  Also had to change the forum software so please re-register for access.  I'm getting ready to update all the Gameplay info and am in the process of making the Playable Races pages (the Rigi are done) look nicer.  Lastly, I'm working to get an alpha build (engine test) demo ready for public access so stay tuned!

Sci-fi mixed with medieval fantasy can be tricky to execute well, but I suppose George Lucas was able to pull it off, so it's not impossible. Best of luck with this project! Hopefully all the whiny naysayers on forums like this don't make you just wanna turn you back on the MMORPG community and make it an FPS or something, though.

(Did I already explain this earlier in the post?) Anyway, the game is basically medieval; but, there will be sci-fi elements in that u can enhance yourself with synthetic implants, etc.  There will also be crash sites where robots call home.

Thx again for the support!  My game has actually been around for about a year - off-and-on - publicly and so far most people are pleased.  I did get flamed a lot back when I was less professional (and had less content to offer) in my posts, though! Heh.  We're definitely not changing to a FPS, though; in fact, my 2nd game project (areios.jonhonline.com) is for the MMOFPS crowd.

    Hey,

The concept is great, but u gotta think of a few things.  In the concept vs graphics, concept wins. We can see that by the fact that UO is still around, and Vanguard is dead, being revived by SOE atm...but graphics play a big part on it, and that, your game is lacking, from what i have seen.

I make the words of jack welch, the former CEO of General Electric, my words:

" If becoming number 1 or number 2 in your industry is not a possibility with your resources.....you should get out, and focus your resources in an industry where becoming number 1 or number 2 is possible"

Best of luck though, with a decent strategy, everyone has a shot.

We're using the Multiverse engine - head to www.multiverse.net and check it out.  I think the graphics are pretty good.  If you're talking about the Alpha 1 screenshot then you're looking at year-old graphics with a totally different (we've since upgraded) engine.  So, poor graphics shouldn't be an issue. =)

The last step is graphics, building the great inners first is or should be the first . Making all the quests first, making the skill tree/point system/ or what ever first , really think people try so hard atone end of a game they leave the other bits left unfinished.

Forget graphics right , and concentrate on content , I think when you have content it will shape the world for you and creating land maps and level layou outs will wrap around the world you already knows exists through the content.

As you Art directions takes shape through the content thenn slowly  wrap the  concepts with 3d modeling.

Also read as many tutoorials as you can on world editing and atmospheric techniques to get the fullest out of multiverse, which i might add is pretty neat tool set. I dabbled with it abd found it pretty easy to create.  Soon i am going to learn to make my own land maps so I can place building on them

That's about what we're going for.  I'm taking a lot of time to plan out all the game mechanics and main content, areas, etc.  The engine takes care of the basic graphics (I have modelers to customize things of course).  Some of the region ideas I have are things that have never been seen in a MMO: I'm trying to stray away from the boring old "forest, desert, ocean, snow" stuff and have more alien terrain like "liquid hydrogen lakes."  Places like the Magma Volcanoes and Rainforests will be over-the-top (i.e. it isn't just some lava flows and a mountain - it's magma explosions, earthquakes, and evolving lava rivers).  I want to make beautiful areas even more beautiful by making the flowers more colorful, the water clearer, etc.  Players will actually be rewarded for exploring (if you discover a point of interest first, you can name it) and I want to encourage players to do more than just hack-and-slash.

All of this is going to take a lot of time and attention to detail; so, the first public alpha will probably be a quick city just to test the engine and server load.  As you can see, though, we have big plans. =)

Somehow we were popular enough to be hacked.  This stupid kid from France exploited a bug in our old Gallery - I've since changed and updated a new one.  Anyway: things are fixed now so everyone is welcome back!

Also: if you'd like to get info on the hacker, it's posted in the www.alatheya.com Forums. ;)
