Relics, documents, amulets and scrying stones all give status (just examine them and you will see what items that gives status). Otherwise there is only guild writs, these you get from quest givers in all 4 class areas (warrior, priest, rogue and wizards) they vary with your level. There is also guild raids that gives quite a lot of status, your guild may or may not do them but they are fun too.

You can also do crafting writs that are a bit quicker to do than the normal writs, though I don't think they give quite as much status for their reward. But if you like to craft, it's a great way to earn SP.

correct me if i'm wrong (i'd love to be wrong actually)

but no matter how many status points you have you can't use them to get yourself a really good mount unless you are in a guild

at least this is what i've come to understand

Heritage quests give the most SP's.  Do those.

You are not wrong.  You have to be in a high level guild to buy the best mounts.  If you are guild level 60, you can buy a 50% mount.  The best non guilded mount is bought after doing some quests in Loping Planes.  However, you can't use SP to buy it.
