gear has nothing to do with it. if 1 of them suck the other will win. Gear only matters when both of the players know how to play thier classes well.

I say it depends on the player who's playing and how he does combo's and shit, The gear might have a little advantage tho..

I hope the arcane mage wins, because I hate shadow priests. Might convince them to respec. I'm not to familiar with either. I dont find many arcane mages. Most 70s are usually fire or Ice. Priests should be holy. Nobody wants to be affiliated with shadow priests. they might be good, but if they suck at healing then people could care less about them. Sorry shadow priests, but to many of y'all have been the fault for wiping in an instance.

Well, i sortof agree with both of you. gear does matter, but you do have to know how to play your character. hopefully at 70 you'd know how to play.

Why do you hate shadow priests? Not only do they do pretty decent damage (especially post-60), but have you noticed:

    - the amount of healing they contribute to the party due to their vampiric abilities (e.g. I have seen shadow priests showing 20-30% of the healing for an instance without leaving shadow form)

    - the way they boost the mana regen of other team members

    - their crowd control abilities through skills such as silence and mind control.

    - the way they can pop out of shadow form and off-heal for particular encounters if it is necessary

Playing my current BM hunter I regularly group with a shadow priest. Her vampiric healing helps my pet recover from the occasional knock it takes and her mana regen is very good for me.  Meanwhile my ferocious inspiration buffs her damage and I help out on crowd control. Both of us end up with excellent DPS. Nice synergies - especially if we can get a resto shaman to heal (totems buff her spell damage and both of our mana regen).

Maybe you have been playing with poor shadow priests, who spam mindblast and pull aggro non-stop. If SP's have been causing wipes for your groups, blame the players, not the wipes or the spec.

That's nice and all, but all I want a priest to do is heal. Im sure they can heal ok, Im sure they can cc, and Im sure they can do some dps, and Im sure they can boost mana regeneration and stuff. Sounds wonderful. Ofcourse, a mage can increase your intellect, and cc, and cause extreme dps. Why suffer your healing (which is what people want priests for. Blizzard didn't make them the main healing class for nothing.) for things other classes can do? I'd much rather have a good ole holy priest, and a tank to keep it safe so we don't need an off-healer. Either that or a holy paladin. I like them to.

Of course every group needs a healer. But why blame this particular class/spec and not druids/shamen/paladins who have specced for anything other than healing? Or warriors who have chosen not to go prot spec. Or rogues/mages who have gimped their damage by choosing to use a pvp spec? And if you want a healer so much then you could always re-roll!

By chosing to play shadow, a priest puts themselves in exactly the same DPS pool as a large number of other players and undoubtedly finds it harder to get places in instances compared to holy priests. But that's their choice not yours, and it seems a little churlish for someone else who has also chosen to play a DPS class to criticisize them (as I suspect is your position).

Feel free to role one then.....  but me, I'll play my Shadow Priest (and Pally & Druid) the way I damn well feel like.... I don't tell you how to DPS now, do I?

Crap, forgot to stay on topic....  I say Shadow Priest over Mage just because I like em.....

I haven't played WoW in a while, so things may have changed, but from what I've seen when I played WoW, Arcane Mages blow, and Shadow Priests own most of the classes. A Shadow Priest can dominate Fire Mages, Frost Mages, and Elemental Mages if the gear difference isn't too high.

If you're asking this question to choose which class to pick, it all depends... Mages are more convenient. Priests are hard to level because they are just a boring class early game. I'd go with priest because of end game, but its your choice...

shadow priest would win, assuming the two players are of equal skill.

With shadow word:pain, silence, fear, shadow fiend, shield... etc etc,  come on!

not to mention that they could pop out of shadow instantly and use Desperate Prayer if they really needed to...

Currently Playing : WAR, UO, RL :p

I seen many Shadow Priests in raiding guilds.  Mage is ok, Nice damage, free food and water.  But having leveled a shadow priest, I would go with the Shadow Priest, then again I am biased.
