Hello all, I'm new to the mmorpgs of today and am wondering what one would be best for me. Going back about 4 or 5 years i played UO and loved it. Nothing beat the thrill of being chased down by a PKer then hiding near a tree for fifteen minutes. More twords the end of my UO experiance i started RPing and it was very fun. Then something bad happend to brittania. They added in newbie land.
Nothing sucked worse than newbie land. Didnt have to worry about pks, theives, looters, it was so boring. And the rp went down because of no PvP. What i'm looking for is a new mmorpg that has the thrills and excietment of the old UO. I wanna die and lose all the stuff i had on me and rush to the bank for my back ups. I wanna have to watch my back for thieves. I wanna be able to rp duels.
The two games i'm currently thinking about is WoW and EQII. WoW, from what i've read is going to be like newbie land UO. You dont have to worry about your things when you die, no one can loot them. EQII on the other hand I havent seen anything about the death system they'll be using.
If anyone knows what game would be best for me please post, you'll be helping me out alot. Thank you.

EQ2 is purely a PvE game, and as such you won't be seeing anybody running around fighting/killing each other except for duels. There will also be no looting/stealing from other players so it's probably not going to appeal to you.
However, I am not going to suggest any games that you should play because I don't know what you would find enjoyable - and besides I don't want anyone flaming me for suggesting a game they didn't like.

Try Lineage II. Sure, the level grind is mind boggling and all that other crap flamers say on the board, but if things are still the way they were in beta, You'll be getting PK'ed left and right. Enjoy!

I Thought I would just throw in here to assist the discussion, all the information that I have concerning death in EQ2. Stop reading here if you already know what EQ2s death system holds, dont care, or dont like reading lots of words. I apologise for any inaccuracies, but I believe all of this information was taken from posts and discussions from the EQ2 devs and therefore should be accurate, at least for the time being.

There are of course options to partake in limited PvP - but it's not like you can run around killing anyone you want. There may however be a server or two set up with PvP enabled with certain rules, like race vs. race, or free for all PvP, but still I don't think it's possible to loot other players so....
Like was mentioned earlier though, Lineage 2 just might be up your alley... but then again, who knows?

"Dark and Light" due Jan 2005 or "Darkfall" or "Mourning" later in 2005. Right now either Shadowbane or Lineage II.
Dark and Light has two opposing sides built into the game and rogue characters can pickpocket the opposing side but since opposing characters are "kill on site" the rogues will have a hard time sneaking up on someone. The others have multiple sides but unless a group finds itself in some defensable valley the server in multiple sided PvP games ends up with 2 large alliances anyway.
Looting a dead body in Dark and Light is limited to money and perhaps natural resources but no items (although you do get experience points for player killing).
I would steer away from Lineage 2, because the lvling is really boring and the farming. And a lot of ppl are selling items and account online.
I was one of the higher lvl when i played, but the grind was too hard. The boss hunts were fun tho, but u need to be in a good clan to do those and high lvl.
I went from Mir2 to Lineage 2 hoping it be better. In some way they are very similar. But i like mir better because when u play u feel like u are affecting the game ( Dont know how to descibe it) but in most other mmorpg u are just another player. Only known between ur clan and friends.
Mir 3 is coming out soon so if u wana start a new game I would pick any game that is in open beta or about to. Unless u dont care if ur behind other ppl.
Dragon Empires looks to have an interesting PvP system (if the game makes it gold, never know these days).
no matter where u come from... no matter where u are now... no matter where ur going... its all about the EXP

In Star Wars Galaxies, when you become a Jedi, you can only die a certain numbedr of times... then you can't do anything.
You get to walk around like Obe Wan did in the movies when he was dead. . .
So yes, in SWG, there's perma death.
"All those FPS children ruin good role-playing because they're bred to be griefers. Then the role-players are bogging down fast-paced FPS games like PlanetSide with their pedantic whining about motivation and content."
I'm 24 years old, does that make me a child? I highly enjoy FPS, RPG, RTS, etc... I enjoy the best of both worlds... when I'm sick of my level 25 character trying to get to the next skill, I pop in Battlefield: Vietnam and "mindlessly" shot other "children".
What will he do next?
As Crazytn said , Mir3 looks like your best bet. It may be more linear than other games but as said before , you actually feel part of the community. In Mir everyone knows everyone else and the community just feels so much better than in other games.PvP is great and if you go to the unofficial mir link , just watch the video of the castle siege and druel
The only bad thing about a smaller community is that sometimes they won't accept new players... I noticed this while playing Pristontale. If you didn't play for 3 years or if you weren't from Asia, then no one wanted to talk to you...
Everyone ran around "Do you speak this lanuage or that?" PT got very annoying very fast.
What will he do next?
Not being biased but i would say mir2 is worth a try , its got the best pvp. If u prefer 3d gams then lineage2 is the other game that comes to mind tho ppl dont like the other aspects of the game( eg few ppl taking over certain parts of maps for themselves)
mir2 currently tho is suffering from lag and very poor customer support thats why i,m waiting for mir3, tho some of the pvp has been toned down for mir3 ( check out TOTAL FORMAT website for more info)u will still be able to pk. Try out mir2 ( trial up to lvl 20) and if u like it join up for mir3 beta.
Eq2 is the game for you!
I dont know, I guess the real question i was asking is if eq2 is up to my standards, and now i think it is. I was thinking it would be impossable to have pvp. Which in my oppinion is lame. But if you can have duels and minor battles, that beats full pvp in my eyes. My most recent online experiance was NwN in a persistant world. I played a dwarf and lived in a land where only dwarfs were allowed. The rp and pvp mix was alot of fun for me. The eq system sounds really good if its the way i'm thinking. I wont be just getting ganked by random l33t d3wds on the road, but if i want to i can partake in battles and duels. Maybe that will be the game for me...
