to anyone thinking of coming back to AC

do it.  if for no other reason than to show turbine that people still care about their baby.  so many people want a revamped AC or AC3, but a good first step would be to get as much out of AC1 as possible.  and if bots/macroing killed the game for you, don't use them.  i've found that the AC experience is much more interesting if you play like the shortcuts aren't available.

AC should have taken the same road as Anarchy Online, make the base game free to play, and if you want the Throne of Destiny expansion, or player housing, etc. then you have to subscribe.

There is no way this game is worth $12.95 a month by today's standards. I agree that in its heyday, it was the best out there. Heck I played it for almost 3 years myself. But with the newer competition, it can't stick to its same pricing model and expect to truly compete. The people still playing are the truly loyal. I don't reckon they get much new, and I mean brand new, players.

I was an avid AC (1) player who still reminisces about my experiences to my DAoC guildmates now and then.  I played it until AC2 came out, then went and split my time between Shadowbane and DAoC(still play --great games). AC2 seemed a radical departure from what I thought a near perfect game, and never figured out why the company departed from such a good formula for success.

Is AC worth coming back to? I really did enjoy the game, but are the servers empty?  What can a returning player--who really needs to relearn everything after a long time away, expect ?

    Thanks for any replies./

The servers aren't empy, I just tried AC for a month and Leafcull had about 200-250 during primetime, and there is global chat so it doesn't feel so empty.  That said, I just couldn't get myself to play for more than a month.  It was fun seeing everything again and you can level extremely fast now (level 80 in two days in game) but it is a complete grindfest and combat (not mages) is extremely slow and dull by todays standard.  I don't even know that I want a revamped AC, I would rather see Turbine work on a completely original IP, I played AC for 4+ years, and I cherish them as it was my first MMO, but any kind of reincarnation of AC would not work, as evidenced by AC2 (which was a good game by the time it was shut down, it was just too late.) Thats my two cents, its fun for a month, but you probably won't stay past then, because the standard for MMO's has gone up so much since then.

I disagree, I think returning to AC has better gameplay then any current game out. Every other game is the same thing, AC you can do so many things and the population is picking back up. Servers dead you say? Ours had over 500 on last night, thats certainly nowhere dead for a game thats over 7yrs old. At least AC updates content every month with new stuff, and like I said you can do so much.

Todays players are pampared and spoiled from playing WOW and other current newer MMORPG's, these people expect easy things and do not care for game lore or gameplay to much. AC has the best LORE and gameplay. I don't care if the graphics are outdated, to me the way the game plays is the best out on the market still.

If they brought back AC as a total upgrade to original AC with all upgraded graphics using the latest graphical interface then I think if done right and all data and everything stayed the same then the game would be bigger then what WOW was when it was in it's first year of play. Imagine Dereth and every piece of hundreds of different armor models and colors and appearances and weapons galore in stunning graphics with particle affects like maybe EQ2, that game would be the most successful MMORPG of all time.

I would even fund the money to the project if I was a millionaire, but reality isn't so kind lol. Anyway I think a 100% copy redone of AC with brillant graphics like EQ2 done the same or better would make the game so beautiful. Every new update each month would have the best looking new armor and weapons. I hope that they plan to redo a AC 100% redo in new graphics. I am drooling just thinking of the possibilities.

Edit: And yes I said graphics didn't mean anything to me, which is what I mean by playing AC because of it's age you can't have good graphics but the gameplay rocks! Also if AC redone 100% like old AC then the new graphics for a game like this would be awesome because the game has so many cool and desirable looking armors and weapons. What other game has thousands of different armors and weapons?

I prefer content to graphix anyday.  I still play Shadowbane and until recently AO. If anyone can stand those graphics they can stand anything.

I guess I can try it again. I do beleive, as some have said, it should be a free game now.  It's not like Turbine needs the money.  Im stiull trying to get over spending 50 bucks on Vanguard.  Maybe playing a oldy but goody might wash that nasty taste out.

So Leafcull or Frost?  I think I played on Leafcull before.  Any players want a new vassal?

Yup I agree there, content over graphics, but it sure would be sweet to see this games current armor and hundreds of  armor and weapon models in a graphical setting like EQ2 style or better.

And if your comming back that would be awesome man, you can try the 14 day trial at first and then just pay monthly and that will get you the TOD expansion also.

You can come play on Frostfell with me and my brother, send me tell in game on my new sword guy hes nearly 35 now and my other mains over 100.  Name is Barbeque Swordsauce on Frostfell. Cya in game.

Thanks. School is out for me , between summer semesters, next week so I'll prob download it then and jump in.  Thanks for the invite.

  • I keep thinking of coming back for a while, especially since LOTRO turned out to be such overhyped boredom.

I had a level 109 Archer way back when, but been so long I don't even recall her name or what server, so would be starting over.

I still sub to EQ2, but don't play much - great game, but afer 3 years hard to find much new to do, so marking time until this Fall when the new EQ2 expansion comes out, or one of the (overhyped) new games actually does not suck.

For those who say the servers are not empty must not come from Verdantine. The server has around 50-60 people online at a time and in a game thats about the size of Rhode Island, thats a pretty empty server.

VT was a mistake of Turbines. If they would have released it a year or so Earlier they would of had success with it.  Don't Goto VT. Goto MT or SC or DT, from what I understand they have the largest populations.  MT has atleast 100 to 400 in the daytime(dependign on day and hour) sometimes you can go int oa dungeon on a week day at 1 pm and not see a single sole, other days eveyr dungeon is full camped out some have mroe htan one fellow lol.  At night I'd say no less than 300. I'm not including Bots, I'm simply estimating since I see over 100 people i na day, and theres more on General Chat, and I don't always goto the most populated areas, usually dont goto to Marketplace, but when your at marketplace theres an average of 25 to 50 people there that aren't bots.
