I have $500ish to spend on 1gig of RAM + Vid. Card...Help me run Vanguard

I've boned up on Vanguards progress and I also followed it for its last year before release. I was excited to play this game, but was saddened when I heard about all of the performance problems. I was told that I would need to upgrade from 1gig of RAM to 2 and from a Nvidia Geforce 7300 LE to something better. Well, 6 months later and I have the extra cash laying around to upgrade my computer.

So, if you are a computer geek and think that you know what you are talking about, please recommed me a Video Card and 1gig of RAM that will fit in my budget. This is what I am using now for memory:

Since the 8800 series has problems with vanguard your best choice for a graphics card is either a 7900 series nvidia, 1950 or 2900 series radeon. A 2900 is probably the best bet for the future, but a x1950xt or x1950 pro are the best buys in terms of value.

Please do not listen to Elcold, he is about one month late in news.

The 8800 works great with Vanguard and since release Nivida has released to updates for the card that have increased game play in VG and many other games that were not supporting it.

Right now I play with a 8800 640mb GTS which cost about 300 bucks.

And from my understanding I.E. Asking the community about 80% play with the 8800 and love it no problems.

Please note to run Vanguard at Full specs you will need something like so.

    8800 640mb GTS or GTX with 2gb DDR800 or 4gb  DR400

To run normal/high you can run on 2gb ddr400 with 640 8800 gts and amd 3000+ aka Intel 2.8-4.0ghz

Get back to me what server you picked it may be the one I play on :)

what Tdub said, a friend of mine is running the 8800 640mb and he has no problems at all.

I'm still running a x850xt, he's getting about 30 more fps than me in the wild and about 10 fps more in towns... and doesnt have problems crashing etc.. and hes running Vista.

Currently any time you have a lot of npc's on screen the game has issues... its gonna do that no matter what, they need to add more character lod options or something.

Well, I just order my new video and memory cards. I bought the following:

    EVGA 8800GTS 640MB

2 x 1024 MB of memory as described below

    Memory Size:  2 x 1024MB
        Memory Speed:  800MHz PC6400
        Memory CAS Latency:  4-4-4-12
        Memory Type:  Dual Channel DDR2
        Pins:  240

    Good choice?

I see that the 8800 GTS issue has been corrected, my mistake. That pretty much leaves the 8800 GTS and 2900 XT, the 320mb 8800 GTS is the best value of the bunch, with only minimal gains to be gleaned by going to the 640mb 8800 GTS and 2900 XT. The choice between the 2900 XT and 8800 GTS depends on whether you have a high res monitor (1600x1200 and up), the 8800 GTS is better for higher resolutions, but gets creamed by 2900 at lower resolutions. Only thing is that both cards are rather large and you should make sure they will fit in your case and that your power supply will be able to handle them.

Good choice there JK-Kanosi  but please make sure you have a power supply that can support that video if not  you will not be able to run anything at all so make sure you have a desent power supply to run it, also your cpu might bottleneck the video card depeding on what you have but so far it looks good wish I could get the evga 8800gts :) good luck .

You have made some good choices there. Those are one of the best video cards. I can put together the best computer imaginable for 700 euro max, dual core 8800 gts 2 gig geil ram, the pc really owns, wish I had the money.

I'd be sure that your motherboard can handle ddr2 memory, as you had ddr in it before. Also do not mix ram of different speeds.

  • PigflyPigfly Member Posts: 21

I'll will help you out but why vanguard? you will be dissapoint. Anyway I'd go for as above post state DDR2 (667MHZ+) with at least 2GB memory WITH 10,000 RPM HD which is very important with a good GPU due to transfer smoothness in which Vanguard suck thank to Unreal crappy chunky C++ codes.

    Whats your mainboard and CPU?

  • PigflyPigfly Member Posts: 21

  • JudgemanxJudgemanx Member Posts: 32

You should of checked to see what the max speed ram your motherboard could of handled. If you buy ram thats faster then your motherboard can handle it will drop down to the max speed than can be handled by your motherboard which means you just bought expensive high speed ram for nothing. As the others have said you might want to check your PSU aswell. If your PSU is to weak you will notice system failures and blue screens if your lucky. Worst case  you get major system failure and your motherboard becomes nothing more then a frisbee.

    Type : Intel Pentium D

    Internal Specification : Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz

Manufacturer : Dell Inc. (Dell)      This is my motherboard

    Product : 0FJ030

I don't know what kind of PSU I have. What would it be called?

If I cannot run what I have bought, please tell me ASAP, because I think I can still cancel it and buy what my computer can run. It would also be nice if you know that my computer can't run it, to show me what I can run. Before I bought anything, I did ensure what memory I can run as in DDR or DDR2 and my current memory is DDR2. I currently have a PCIe card, so I made sure my new card fits in a PCIe.

To the poster asking "why this game,"

The upgrade is really for AoC, however, I wouldn't even be looking at AoC if Vanguard didn't bomb the way it did. I was hyped up about playing Vanguard, because the way the developer talked, Vanguard is the game I've been waiting for. I never did try it, because of the horror stories concerning the performance. With these new hardware components, I plan to give Vanguard a shot. It will have until AoC comes out to capture me.

I've been on the phone with Dell, who I bought my computer from and he says that my motherboard will support up to 667Mhz for my RAM. So this means I am wasting my money on the bigger cards, however, they were actually the same price due to rebates as the 667mhz cards. Will these cards cause my computer problems or will the computer just slow them down like you said they would?

As for my power supply, it is 375w. The guy initially said that it will support the 8800GTS, but I am having him check with the technical support guy to be sure.

    Thanks

The 8800 GTS has a minimum requirement of a 400w power supply.

  • the_troutthe_trout Member Posts: 84

The faster RAM won't hurt your Mobo, you just won't get the full benefit of it.

Your power supply is a bit on the lean side for that card but might be ok.

    Good luck.

  • JK-KanosiJK-Kanosi Member Posts: 1,357

The Dell technical support guy said that I need a 600w PSU to run a 8800GTS video card. My XPS 400 only supports up to a 375w PSU, which in turn can run up to a Geforce 7950GT and my motherboard can support up to 667mhz of memory (up to 4 gigs). So honestly, even after maxing out my computer, I'm still not sure i will have the rig to run Vanguard.

also you dont need said graphics as above, thats for high to medium grahpics. you can easily run on Extreme performance or high performance no problem.

    I run a 8800GTS 640mb with a 470W psu. No troubles at all. /shrug

This is such a bummer, I was so excited too. I just cancelled the order, which was already shipped. So, I have to refuse the package when it gets here and wait for it to be returned and my account credited for what I paid for. Then I will be able to place another order with the memory and graphics cards my computer can support. I suppose in another 2 years I will just buy a maxxed out gaming rig to play the latest games.

So how will Vanguard run on a:

    Intel Pent. D. 3.0ghz

2gigs of 667ghz RAM (what about 4gigs of 667ghz RAM. I still have the option to get 4gigs)

256mb Geforce 7950GT video card (I have the guy checking if a 512mb 7950GT exists and if compatible with 375w PSU)

It will run on that, the speed drop off in ram isn't that big and it wont have a huge effect on performance. That system is basically the tech that they designed vanguard to run on, so it should run pretty well.

  • JK-KanosiJK-Kanosi Member Posts: 1,357

I am just going to get 3 sticks of that RAM for a total of 3gigs to be safe.  I guess the bright side is that my computer limits are saving me $200 I would have otherwised spent.
