Conveyor belt MMORPGs

EraserheadEraserhead Member UncommonPosts: 343

It's only recently, after a good while of wondering why I can't find a MMORPG to make me enjoy playing MMORPGs again that I had the small realization that I'm bored of being dumped on the beginning of a moving conveyer belt where I'm expected over x period of time to perform x number of tasks and earn x number of gold to then roll off at the far end like I had no part in the process other than to be there and press the expected keys when those keys required pressing. Everybody achieves the same magnificent goals from performing exactly the same perfunctory and compulsory motions and is left processed and packed with a sticker on their forehead saying "you played and enjoyed, OK?".

So which MMORPGs place significance on your choices and how you play the game when deciding your reward?

RL. Its an ok MMO. Its got Perma Death, unlimited classes, great graphics, PvP and PvE.

And its free! Well, mostly. If you want to eat you have to get a job witch realy sucks. They should take that out.

Have you tried Ryzom?  Give the trial a shot (but don't expect the tutorial quest line to continue once you leave for the mainland.. ie when you leave the trial... there are no quests as such there, or weren't when I played...  There's a few missions to get faction, but no typical handholding quests)

That's a good way of putting it, Eraserhead. I think of it like a kindeguarden class, where they hold your hand and take you on field trips, in single file, and give you creyons and paper at other times.

    Once upon a time....

Conveyor belt...pretty good analogy.  Also known as linear games.  A.k.a. level based.  A.k.a. loot grinds.

And the latest crop of them are coming to a store near you soon.

Try some of the sandbox MMOs out there. They are more entertaining IMO than whats being put out these days. Either case i fell ya, i know exactly what you mean. Perhaps thats why even when i leave EvE for a couple of weeks i always come back. At least there i feel like im in charge of my own destiny lol.

Try Ryzom or EvE...im sure some other players can tell you about others.

I completely agree.  Ive said this many times before. Traditional pencil and paper RPGs have been looked down upon but still remain superior to the video game formats. With good imagination and a fair GM, your experience can be vastly more enjoyable. Do you play single player video game RPGs?

Hmm. I have the same thing. I'm going to give you a small list, and my personal experiences, but everyone is differnt.

1.RYL, It's a pretty good game, nice graphics for a free game. The leveling i found easy, me and my friend we're playing on two differnt computers, at my house, and we got to lvl 45, in about 3 hours. It's fun, and entergetic. It's really easy to make money. The really did a good job on the drop system. Once you hit around 15-20. Monsters stop dropping items worth 1.5 million to 3 million. It's really fun, the community is great. Sad thing is, the game has been ruined by massive private servers. www.ryl.net

2.Rappelz. Meh, grinding, but it can be fun, if you meet some friends.rappelz.gpotato.com

3.Rakion. A really fun game, pvp based, you level while killing other players, really fun, i've been playing it since CB, so it's alot of fun.

Well, i'll edit it later, ill add more.

At least that trend  is fading away as time passes on. I'm sure Eve Online is the closest to a dynamic mmo. After hearing about CCP, I got turned away. Nevertheless, there is still hope.

level based doesn't kill your game.  level based and expansions does... theres only two ways to expand content force people to reroll/rerezz/remort and increase the power cap(and the grind to get to max power).

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Not really, those are just two of the most common and so far reliable ways to make more content. If a system is created for player-created content (not just pvp), then that same system will expand content and increase the lifespan of a game.
