I like playing a caster and I'm looking for an MMO that isn't about pushing the same puttons over and over and over. An MMO that allows casters a large variety of spells to put into unique combination so that all players aren't playing their classes the same. An MMO that requires thought and strategy in combat, not the you've done one instance and the strategy is the same in the next. Any ideas? Does this MMO exist?

there are some (mostly Asian style MMO's that have a tonne of spells but again are mostly button mashing games). my problem is lack of spells and lack of spells i like. my all time favourite caster class was the Mage in WoW because of the fire talent tree. hurling massive fireballs at mobs was fun. have you tried DAOC? i hear that is very indepth
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Hi, thanks for the response. I have a lock in WoW but never played a mage. It's getting harder to log in and I'm just tired of the repetiveness I guess. Level 63 and 64 quests are the same as the one's at level 2 and 3 it seems. The mob killing is the same regardless of the mob. I never have to worry about taking a different approach. I simply use the same routine over and over so I guess I'm looking for something new. how are the EQ2 casters? Is the game emmersive or the same garbage mobs walking the same 3 point path? Is the game believable or do bears, wolves and humans all wander around together never eating eachother? Are the characters emmersive? Lot's of options with spells/skills to keep tall the players from being the same? I would try DAOC but I think their graphice may be a bit dated making it hard to adjust to after playing more current MMO's,
You might enjoy Guild Wars. There is a total of over 1100 skills in the game split between 10 classes, and your character is composed of (up to) 2 classes. You can only equip 8 skills at any given time, so it's not as simple as spamming Fire Ball, Greater Fire Ball, Fire Ball 2, repeat.
You can look here if you want to browse the skills and get an idea of how they work (The elementalist is the basic "mage", while the necromancer, monk, ritualist, and mesmer are all spellcasters). The idea is that you make a synergic build with skills that work well together. This is often accomplished by mixing skills from different classes, which gives you an infinite amount of combinations.
EQ2 has unique caster classes, but they're still repetitive in nature, meaning you'll still use the same spells on each average pull. However, you'll find that you use significantly more spells than WoW. On my enchanter by lv20 I was using short cut keys 1-5, ctrl + 1-5, and alt + 1-5 just so I could have quick access to all the spells I use frequently.
Generally, MMORPG combat is boring, and almost turn-based in nature. Age of Conan will change that when it comes out with it's real-time combat system. I believe spells in AoC will still be similar to a traditional MMO, although you will have to aim all of them and they've introduced "spellweaving", which sounds interesting, but not revolutionary. Not much information is out on spellweaving, unfortunately, which, to me, implies that it's not nearly as interesting as the melee system that they're so proud of (and they should be, from the looks of it).
Yes Guild Wars you have freedom to pick any skill in 2 class mixes of your choice.
Guild wars is a great skill system. You can also change the skills at anytime (out of combat) to remix and perfect situational templets.
Out of the fantasy element I also suggest EVE as a great complicated tactical MMO. Total freedom to mix anything. Definatly not a button masher.
City of Heroes/Villians is also pretty good in the freedom to customize your toons powerset. Two of the same class toons can be totally different, and usually are.
Of course in every MMO there will be some element of FOTM (flavor of the month). I strongly suggest not following the herd as it becomes predictable.
SHOHADAKU
Its called Granado Espada.
I would say EQ2 mage combat is better than WoW but still very much the same thing so not a big difference. This is with one exception, the coercer who can charm mobs but also risk them breaking the charm and attacking you. Besides charm, you have mez and stun abilities as well as mana/power regen.
The coercer is a blast to play, never a dull moment...
Still I too think you should take a look at DAoC, I think they have a really good leveling system which gives you the ability to choose how to mold your character (however that game might be in steep decline from what I hear).
What you describe sounds like something that Age of Conan will be.
It is not out yet, but the game is very focused on combat with a new combat system to go along with it.
Yea you bash the same 6 buttons all the time in combat
"Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god."

No you dont, there are different combos, its real time fighting, and different combos have different effects like for ranged and spell weaving, so i take you , and throw two right back at you............and lets throw in a smiley

ITs already been reviewed by the magazine PC Gamer and the 6 button combo sytem was quoted as confusing and too complicated. ill add and raise

In every game you will push buttons o,o
The same buttons at that. 100% of games require you to push the same buttons. It's not what button you push, it's what you can do with the buttons you push that matter.
In the other MMO's I've had the pleasure of playing you pushed buttons 1-0, though mostly only about 1-3. Heck, if you play AoC with a controller you won't even be pushing buttons for combat, analog stick will be great.
I was a mage in WoW and there was nothing remotely exciting about it dealing with combat.
Though I never really understood what people mean by a 'buttonmasher' game. Is not every game a game where you mash buttons on some form of input device? Except for maybe, the Wii...I'd hope you push buttons because I am not going to play a game using voice command.

They clearly had a monnkey playing it they feel that six buttons is too complicated, especially since gmaes have people utilized more than 6 buttons usually, and like in EQ1 a bard would be twisting 4 songs while fighting, so thats 4 songs coupled with melee attacks, ill throw in a and a , your move
Age Of Conan is probably the game your waiting for. Spell caster will use the SpellWeaving system that will allow the blending and combining of various magics. You might also want to know that magic in AOC carries with it's use certain dangers and consequences. The magic system is not the same as the combat system.
The DDO caster does take a lot more strategy than say conjuring water and polymorphing the odd mob here or there, especially when you do the dungeons for the first time. Also, most of your spells are instant cast, I hate this having to cast for 3 seconds or longer...........but then the combat is a lot more fast paced than most.
You must not leave until you free Arlos and have gathered your party safely in this hallway.
DnD online was fun for the first 2 weeks then ther constant dungeoneering in the middle of the same city got to me

I love nuking and having it look powerful... That said, my favorite mage was in RagnarokOnline... Why? Because there was more to it than just clicking your target and pressing the skill, which gets repetitive... I love the way that there were spells that are based on position and/or cast on the ground. Position and surroundings mattered when I used "ice wall" to cage an enemy. Or casting fire wall on the ground (eventhough the npcs' AI were stupid, but it was fun when they ran into it), etc.. BTW, that's why I'm glad Hero's Journey and some other games are doing that, eventhough the animations doesn't look powerful from the videos of HJ that I see...
Final fantasy 11 has something like that where you do a weapon skill and another character follows in 3-5 seconds and it makes a bonus damage effect element called a skillchain which can be followed up by magic which does insane bonus damage...
Though I heard LOTRO has something like that but I've never played it

WTF? why u're spaming this "Granado Espada" in all forums?
Try a Rune, Enchanter or Sorceror in RYL.
fpr combat, and throw spells in different combinations or hack away with your scythe or staff.

WTF? why u're spaming this "Granado Espada" in all forums?
Because I put it in my signature (Why are you spamming Laguna?). But it fits here because it has strategic elements, probably more then your standard mmo.
Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and consciencious stupidity.
As you may already be able to tell, unfortunately the short answer is no. Guild Wars may qualify in some sense but if you're looking for the MM in MMORPG then mindless button mashing is all you got...
DAoC is not any better than anywhere else. The PvP system just happens to be fairly worthwhile unlike most games and since people are smarter than AI it's more challenging but there's little strategy. You pick out the best combination of moves then rinse, lather, repeat.
^agree.
i guess you can `call` it strategy.....
buts its not
its just rock , paper, scissors. and from time to time, everyone, no matter what class you pick, will be the rock , paper and/or scissors losing or winning against other rock, paper and scissors.
its more like..you are playing a pawn in a very cruel RTS game of attrition where the dev's are actually controlling you. hehe
strategy? nawww. your attrition fodder in most morpgs.
