I am very active on the MMORPG.COM -SWG- Forum and I see Vanguard title keep popping here and there. Most of the Veterans of SWG dont agree with me being a VET of SWG as well, but just call me the odd one.

So here it goes.. As well all know, SOE has a nice Station Pass system in which you can play several of their mmorpgs. Now Vanguard is pretty new to the market and I used to be a hardcore Everquest player. I hear bad things and good things about this game. Now I am very active in the SWG mmorpg right now, but was thinking of dabbling in this game, to see it for myself.

I know we got some Blockbuster MMO's coming out shortly, but I would like to give Vanguard a shot, to see it for myself. I played the BETA, but only for about 1 week. Could I get a honest opinion about this game from Players, that played the older MMO's (EQ, Asherons Call, DAoC, well you get what I am saying). Its not that I dont trust anyone thats plays WoW in any means, but I come from a old school of mmo's (when mmos were mmos and not fps) and just want to know, what you like and dislike about the game and is it worth even trying it out. I knew we get alot of messages like this saying.. Is it good, or does it suck, but I am pretty close in picking this game up.

This would be the best advice I could give you. I had a less than pleasant VG experience, but I left the game at the end of the first month, have an older computer that doesn't run the game well, and sort of grew bored of Fantasy MMORPG games altogether.   So my views really should have no bearing on your decision, and maybe no one's really should.

I would wait until the server merges are over....about the only thing I'd recommend at this point....

I played EQ, AC, and DAoC.  This game is nowhere near as good as EQ or DAoC and feels nothing like either of them.

But now that you mention AC, it occurs to me that I hate VG for the same reasons I hated AC -- terrible world construction, astoundingly vapid attempts at writing game lore, too much soloing, poorly written quests, wooden character animations, complete lack of special effects.

If you already have a Station Pass and want to try it, maybe you can pick up the box for cheap -- or can you get a free download now?  I would NOT pay actual money even to try the game out, however.

There is a free trial in the works.

Save your money and wait for that.

It's not really anything like EQ although it was hyped to be the spiritual successor to it. The best thing to do would probably be to wait until they put in the free trial and then try it. That way, you won't have wasted any money if it turns out that you don't like it.

I have a lot of fun in VG but there seems to be more people that hate it than play it. So wait on the trial (should be coming in the next 1-2 months) then give it a shot.

Honestly, if you can stomach SWG in it's current form then Vanguard will be right up your alley.

It's probably worth trying. I played it for about 3 months before getting sick of it. I don't consider myself to have been "ripped off."

It's not a great game... And that is the reason for all the vitriol here. They hype of the Brad-type peoples at Sigil got the fans stoked, and everyone expected a miracle game. So when what came out was, not only not a miracle, but not even what one would call "quite good", but merely "OK", people felt betrayed.

However, if you're not looking at it from that perspective -- and I was not, having not followed the development of Vanguard much at all -- and go into it with a blank slate (as much as one can these days), and if you just take it on its own merit (or lack thereof), then I think "fair" about sums it up. It's a fair game. Not great, but not as sucktastic as some of the more vehement people would have you believe.

It's also not something I could stomach for long months of time, but that's me.. personal taste and all that.

the best advice would be to wait for the free trial friend.

my opinion of the game is, first of i am a eq vet of 7 years. this game had a few aspects of old eq but on the whole is really a different game. the style of combat is a bit more fast paced the quests are short with not much substance. there are a few quests that are quite enjoyably but on the most i find them lacking a bit.

the gameplay in general is fun. easy to solo but challenging enough when you try to take on more difficult mobs.hte combat can be real fun when in a small group as you can use each others skills and implement each other.the graphics are good if you can run them high enough. being an old eq player you might like the world as it does have many open area's which serve nothing more than travel really, but this can add to a more real feeling world. but some people find this a waste of space and think that every area should be action packed adventure. so that really depends on your preference.

tradeskills are very involving and can be a grind but also rewarding later on. so not everyone will be a top crafter making the tediousness of it rewarding. diplomacy i can't really comment as i found it quite boring.

performace has improved but still needs a lot more optimisation to make it not a problem. the game has improved much in this aspect but still can be frustrating for a lot of people, myself included.

all in all you really need to try the game to see for yourself. i dont think it is anywhere near as bad as some say. but it could be a lot better too. SOE deserve credit for what they have done here, lets hope they keep going n the same direction.

Oh please, mourn somewhere else since I am so sick of Sony logo's that even my Sony DvD, Monitor and TV had been sold long ago because I had enough and dont accept immitation.

And those who dont know SOE that well, I wish you all a wonderful success.

still dont get what your trying to say? the OP was asking an honest opinion on the game and what you said just does not seem to say anything? it might be me just being stupid but are you saying you dont like the game or something? because i really can't work out what it is you are trying to say!

an honest opinion on the game vanguard. he is asking what we think about the game in this thread. he is asking what you like and dislike about the game. not SOE or sigil. so if you really want to answer the OP then answer him.

Personally, I love Vanguard.  I like the game play, the openess, the solo-friendliness.  It fits my style of play, which is small segments of time in any given play session.  I've also been lucky with performance, I have a 3-year Alienware that has been very stable with the game.

However, as others have stated, you can't loss with patience.  The free trial is around the corner and server merges are coming soon.  My only concern with a free trial is that if it's a 10-day gig or something of short duration, it's really hard to get a feel for the game in the early levels.  Probably no difference from another other game.  Regardless, the 'hook' in this game was not in the first 10 levels, it was really in the 20s.

If you try it, I hope you enjoy.

My honest opinion: Vanguard isn't worthy of a subscription in its current state, and is a sad example of really disgusting management and serves as perfect example of how NOT to launch an MMO. I'm sure in 2-3 years time it will be a much better game, but by then other MMOs would have taken away people's interest. Yeah a few patches here in there lately, but not much progress on the horizen future of VG look pretty grim. I think its a game that doesn't belong in this market either, glorifies EQ1 too much, a style of gameplay that today only appeals to a minority. I know they made the game's mechanics a less harsh then EQ1, but its trying to appeal to EQ1 and WoW players at the same time which is a really bad idea imo. I hope they prove me wrong though and the game really suprises us all down the track, but no biggie if it doesn't there are other MMOs.

Thank you all again and thanks Shukes33

I decided to wait till the free trial comes out, by reading the forums over at VSoH, there is still alot of mixed emotions. I do have patience and I am not one to give up on a game after 1 week. I usually play out the entire month of my sub then make a decision.

I still find this game interesting since I am a big fan of the older style mmorpgs out there. EQ got me into this world of mmorpg and believe me, it took me a month just to figure out what the heck I was doing.

When I made my first batwing crunchy and quested for my newbie gear, I became a addict.. LOL

I may not PL to level capp, but thats me, I am in no rush. Anyways thanks again for the wonderful responses.

I will be dabbling in EQ2 for now till then...
