PvP is of the 'Realm vs. Realm model.   There are 13 kingdoms in the world, but only 5 of those are presently in the game.   The other 8 were never available, and it is questionable when, (if ever), they will be unlocked.  Still, those 5 alone make Ganareth a very vast place; easily 3-4 times the size of Telon in Vanguard.

There are two factions; Dark and Light.  Each controls one of the 5 kingdoms.  There is another neutral kingdom, and there are two other 'contested'  kingdoms; much like the 'frontiers' of DAoC--only on a huge scale.

PvP is conducted on several levels.  First there are encounters between individuals or groups who encounter each other while out hunting.  Second, there are sieges which take place around player built forts, and finally, there are GM events, (which may happen anywhere from 1-4 times a month--depending)

There is only one server, so all players are eligible to participate.  The PvP is mostly free-form PvP with no level limits between combatants, although there are some commonly accepted player conventions which prevent a level 100, say, from ganking a level 20.

The largest problem with PvP is that there is a very small player base.  It has been increasing since 'free-to-play', but is still only around 100 players or so at peak hours.  With that few players spread out over that vast a playing area, the likelihood of a 'chance' PvP encounter is negligible.

Still, PvP does take place, primarily on a guild level.  Those players who have 'stuck it out' over the last year are now at or near the level cap.  They know each other, and often arrange, informally, to conduct a PvP event between two guilds.  Most of the newer players are still in their 20s and 30s and many are still unguilded.  This leads to a 'generation gap' of sorts, but it is not really an issue.

What  IS an issue, however, is the basic instability of the game system.  Crashes to desktop are not uncommon, and FPS levels and lag has been a problem since day one.  While annoying when by yourself out in the 'Great Wide Open', it can be unbearable, (and fatal), whith large groups of players present.

There are a few performance improving settings and adjustments which can be made, but overall they only improve the situation a bit.

The game was set up to be a primarily player-generated content game.  With performance issues and low player population inhibiting that, there is not all that much non-PvP content.

There are a large number of quests in the starting area that give very good experience and useful rewards, but once a player levels out of that area, (around level 24 or so), the quests in the rest of the world are very few and not very rewarding.

The grind is long and slow.  There are sufficient MOBs of sufficient levels in practically every area, but the amount of experience recieved seems painfully low at times.  In that respect, all MOBs are not created equal.  A level 20 'Epona of Life' ,(horse), does not give the same amount of experience as a level 20 Half-Orc.  So trial and error is needed to accurately assess a MOBs potential strength and potential reward.  Other players can, (and will), help with advice, but often you are alone in an area and will have to depend on yourself .

If you are patient, and go into the game with your eyes open, then I think you will be pleased.  Just be aware that this game is still very raw, and it will not run like a finished, front-line MMORPG.  For free though, all you really risk is a level of frustration and some time.

I recommend you give it a look and play for 3-4 weeks.  By that time you will know if you want to stay or leave.

Here is what I'm wondering. How can the developers afford to let people play for free? How can they keep the game up making no money? Or is it just for box sales? Seems like at this rate these guys will be making like 40 bucks a month lol.

Some free games have like an item mall system where you spend real money to buy things to make your character stronger in game. I havent tried this one since it became free though so I dont know what they've got going. I imagine they made it free to help ease the pain of the dissapointment that so many had when this released and to try and keep people interested while they try and improve. Was an ok game in my opinion back when I played, just wasnt worth 14.99 a month to me. Might give it another try now that it's free.

    From the official DnL website:

Dark and Light is currently being improved and heavily reorganized.

As a direct consequence of this decision, Dark and Light is now totally free, without any kind of restriction, until a more satisfying solution can be set up in the forthcoming months. This is applicable to all accounts that were already created, whatever may be their current subscription type - Master, Freedom, or Discovery.

Due to the termination of this service, any billing or invoicing is of course stopped, including accounts that were already opened.

A new system of account creation will be set up in the forthcoming days to allow newcomers to also access Dark And Light for free.

    The Dark and Light Team.

They have no real choice but to let it be free. They are poison to any billing company, as Farlan will continually charge your card, and then swear it's the billing companies fault. They did it with every billing company they had.

Also, they are being sued over the fact that the engine D&L is running on is not theirs. Once that's taken care of (and they will lose), then they'll have to contend with Snailgames, since they partnered with Snailgames under false pretenses (i.e. that they owned everything), and Snailgames will be hit with a loss the same as Farlan. I'm sure they'll be looking to recoup that out of Farlan's hide.

Also, Farlan/NPcube is under investigation by Federal investigators due to all the people they ripped off. And I'm sure a few international law agencies, as well.

All of this stuff is found throughout the D&L forums here, so knock yourselves out.

So, if you're gonna play it, better do it now, 'cause it won't be around for much longer.

I think I might give it a try, simply out of curiosity.

Rather positive, worse things came to mind after I played it.

I have been wondering about this free-to-play trend with not only Dark and Light, but also with other games as well.

I have heard that Asian games such as Lineage use this a lot, and that the way they get their profit is by having players buy items or spells for real money in an in-game exchange of some sort; (not having played any of these type games, I can't say for sure, but I *think* it works along those lines).

I have heard that this is a common, (and preferred), method of play in Asia, and that if Snail Games proceeds with Dark and Light it will most likely proceed along that model.

I see a lot of other  (non-Asian)  games also advertising free-to-play as well (note the banner for 'Sword of the New World' at the top of the page).  These are promo specials that have limits on the duration of the free account and (often) limits on the characters operating under a free-to-play system.

Dark and Light is not in either category.  It is free to play because the game itself is too unfinished to permit a pay-to-play subscription.  I understand why they might do this over a short term basis in order to try to build a player base that enjoys the game enough that they might at some future point be willing to pay-to-play.

But surely, such financial hemorrhaging can't go on indefinately!  Granted, the level of support is at minimal levels, but I would think it still has to cost the company something to keep the server going.  I would assume they still have to pay Alchemic Dream to run the Community.  I don't understand how they can afford to do this (it's been going on now for at least 3-4 months now.)

I bought the game and so did several others. But I got a refund. One of the best things I ever did...

Played Wow, D and L, AOC, GW, Eve, Rift and many more insignificant games.
