Very Usefull Website for MMO's

FensusFensus Member Posts: 211

Heres a website i feel is going to be very usefull in the future, as they add more games and more people post their builds.

www.Ratemybuild.com

you can post your own builds and people can rate them on how they like them, currentyl its for CoH/CoV and LoTR online only but should be adding more games later. You'll find it usefull if you're like me and can be very confused with which builds you shouldnt make and which you should ( i know any build can work but some make gameplay alot more difficult for new players)

"The internet's #1 source for build information for every MMORPGs across the board."

You then get to choose between:

    • City of Heroes
    • City of Villains
    • Lords of the Rings Online

    Impressive...

I'm not sure I really see the point of this. Why would I care what other people think of my build? It's my build, not theirs... And why should they care what I think of their build?

I'm always interested in why people build their characters the way they do, especially with CoX.  I get some really interesting ideas and good pointers.  It's also very nice when someone else works out the math for me.

    Signe mostly sums it up...

In a game like COH/COV you have to make a power choice usually every other level. If you make the wrong power choice  you could get stuck with a crappy power. If you are high enough level the amount of time between levels is pretty long so you could end up gimped. The various hero planner apps help with this problem but you still don't know a power until you take it.. I personally like to plan out my builds and get an idea of what is generally successful. That's where RMB comes in.

Lotro doesn't work as well as COH/COV since you can pretty much get every skill by paying for it. No biggie though...

Our plan is to try to pick games that make sense for the site. If planning a build isn't that useful in a game we may not support it...

Becuase I dont play MMO's for the e-peen factor, I quite enjoy discovering builds without assistance.

I am all for a site that gives good solid build help. I don't quite see how "rating builds" though, is going to do that. You aren't advising people on whether a single power will fit into their own build, but on how awesome (or not) the builds of other players already are. And how is anyone going to know how good a build is unless they've tried that particular build?

If you know COH well you may understand this example, which is just off the top of my head: I was told for a long time back in the old "perma-Elude" days that I was "wasting power choices" by taking the other 6 defense powers in SR, and particularly the 3 toggles... because in those days Elude could be made permanent with perma-hasten, and had better defense than the toggles + passives combined. It seemed like every other SR scrapper in the world at that point just had perma-haste/perma-elude. I was actually told that I "could not possibly play successfully" without perma-elude.

This was news to me, as from levels 33 to about 37, I don't think I died a single time. That's right... not one death in 4 levels. It occurred to me to wonder how leveling 4 times without dying could be though of as not being a successful build. And yet, had your site existed and had I posted there back then, I'm quite sure all the narrow minded "you must do it my way or you suck" people would have rated it poorly. (Not that I would have posted, nor cared, back then... that is my point.)

Again, they were in the position of not having actually played with my build, so how could they know it was any good? You can't always just "look" at a build and know it will work. I had a friend one time who had a kinetics defender that had almost none of her regular powers, but mostly pool powers, including a bunch of the melee pool powers like Jump Kick and Flurry that most "uberleets" in COH totally shun. I am sure looking at her build they'd rate it a 0. And I will admit when she told me her build you would have seen some question marks floating over my head, were I in a cartoon. It is an odd build. However, when I saw it in action, I questioned no more -- it played fine. It did not play like a normal kinetics defender, but it didn't need to -- as long as she was having fun. Certainly, nobody died or anything because she had this strange build.

One issue I have always had with the COH community in particular is the "build snobbery" that exists there. It's perfectly fine to have a site where people can get build help (though I think they can get plenty of that on the official forums of COH -- I see posts like that all the time there), but a place where people can just vote props to each other for good builds really won't help the average gamer pick his next power... unless he follows your build exactly, which I would not advise anyone to ever do... Builds are a personal thing, and what I find fun to do may not be something you find fun to do.

As for trying it out, there is always the test center. I have friends who, every time they level into a new power, copy to test and try out that power on test.

I don't play games for the e-peen factor, either.  One of my favourite characters in CoX was a gravity controller.  It wasn't a very good character but it was really fun to play.  It doesn't mean I'm going to make a character exactly like theirs but it's nice to know.  I like seeing their costumes and reading their bios, too.  It's interesting to see what powers people choose and why.

I totally understand where you're coming from...

The idea of the site isn't really to determine which build is the most uber. I'm hoping it's more of a place to share your builds and find ideas on characters you may want to play..

There are lots of different kinds of players out there.. People who don't have a lot of time, people who like to min/max, people who don't want to think about their character, people who want to try something challenging.. Hopefully the site provides a nice middle ground for everyone..

It is definitely true that the forums have a ton of builds on them and serve a similar purpose.. In my experience the forums are a pain in the a** to search through. This site is pure builds.. It should be easy to search and browse..

In general.. If people find the site helpful then I'm happy! It is what it is...

Quick question for those who don't play CoH/CoV and Lotro...Do any of you play a game that does make sense for our site?

I was thinking Guild Wars.. Thoughts?

I was thinking about starting up playing Guild Wars again after Eye of the North comes out and I finish reading Harry Potter.   If you asked that question six months ago, I might have said DDO, but I got bored of that game pretty quickly.   I'm really looking for something new from an MMO, though CoH is still a great game and I'm glad to see you're supporting it even though its pretty old.

I think this is an admirable goal. Here is why I take issue with it: the ratings. With those, you are asking for build snobbery, in my opinion. I would get rid of the ratings, and just have a site with build suggestions.

To me, a good "advice" guide would look something like this. It explains the logic of the build and how it works, and lets the reader decide if this sounds like something he or she wants to try. Also by explaining the build logic, it helps the reader figure out the general idea of how you go about making a build.

Now, I'm not saying ALL your guides should look exactly like that (I would say, let each author write it his own way). And if you want to let people rate the quality of the GUIDE (as a GUIDE), that's fine. But I think having them rate the BUILD, is a bad idea, and leaves you too open, especially in COH, to build snobbery and uber-leetness.

Yeah.. I can see where you're coming from with the ratings..

In general, what does a "highly rated" build even mean? Is it the best at killing stuff, quickest to 50, most fun to play.. My point is that it's impossible to compare builds since they are generally subjective... I think the point of the rating system is to bring the builds with the most care put into them to the top of the list. I would hope the best min/max and fun to play build would both get 10s.

definitely agree with the concept of a "guide" vs. a "build". If people want to put in a whole guide into the site then I wuld SUPER happy. In fact  I'd probably give you a 10 I wouldn't be so concerned with the name "build".. If you want to write more of a guide then go for it.

I'm not trying to blow anyone off. Please give suggestions.. I'm happy to consider pretty much anything..

I think it would be more useful also, if the people posting their builds would talk a bit about why they've set their character up the way they have.  You can comment and it would be great if people used the forums to discuss the different builds.
