Ive been asking this question for about 6 months now. I am a huge fan of WoW Ive been playing since its been released and still do. Ive enjoyed the wonders of the game and everything about it from instances to pvp to random people yelling random things out. But now WoW has been out for a year and half now, I am utterly bored with the game and have tried many other mmorpgs (LOTRO - City of Villians/Heroes - Anarchy Online - Lineage 2 - GW - etc) and none of them offer the amount of enjoyment I used to have on WoW. Does anyone know if any possible game coming out in the near future that will finally put an end to this blizzard crazyness? because it needs to stop! All my friends at school or online are crazed about this game and do not want to play anything else, everyones so used to blizzard with there WoW that they dont even wanna try any other games and even if they do they say "oh its just like WoW" because it basically is....and this kind of attitude from lots of people could possibly destroy very good MMORPGs that are coming out in the near futrue.
but the point is - Is there ever going to be a game that will finally put an end to blizzard?

I'm sure at some point World of Warcrafts subscriber base will decrease significantly over time because of age, but I don't think there will be a "WoW killer". I do expect other games to take away a chunk of subscribers. I expect Lineage 3 to take away a big chunk from WoW's korean and chinese subscriber base.
Wow is nothng, in the gamers comunity, is only a comercial game used to farm money. Only 8,5 milion accounts, and less then 2 milion peoples that play now. I played wow for 2 years, last year more coz wanted to try TBC, I quited after first TBC month.
Gamers comunity is over 10% of world population so is about 500 milions peoples.
Most played game, most popular is and will be MU for a long time, is estimated at over 130 milions accounts world wide, on oficial and private servers.
Second is Scions of fate with over 70. milions accounts.
Lineage 2 is very high also, in 2006 they registred 14 milions accounts.
Wow is only a cartoonish masquerade, thats why some wow veterans sayd :Your lvl up in age will be when you leave wow.
Ots true, wow dont have nothng more to offer, will be always a beta game, with bugs that never solved. Even if the game is full with violence, developer dont care, the game is open for all peoples over 12 years age, by comercial reason, no damn restriction.
Why teenagers play wow, because is the only game where they can feal equal with the matur peoples, dosent matter if they like wow or not, is cool to play wow, these is the fashion today.
Wow is a plaque in the worst sense of the word. Wow show the way that you must not falow in your life.
Well, I might give a reasonable response if you could make up your mind on weather you enjoy the game or not.
no WoW will never die. will it become less popular of course. will they eventually need to add a different direction for their endgame content yes.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Put an end to WoW? No.
Be more popular than WoW was at its peak? Absolutely, yes.
Why? Because they painted themselves into a corner. They made an easy no-brainer game that the non-mmo playing masses could jump into with little fuss, and also made the entire game level and loot centric. How many more expansions do you think they're going to slough off on players that add the only two things of value in WoW, levels and more loot which makes all previous loot worthless, before people start saying "C-ya!".
Not to mention the mmo gamers who started with WoW, and then see that there are other games with more challenge, better graphics, more things to do, etc., and they too say "C-ya!".
So basically, we're hating on Blizzard because they make quality games now?
Sweet !!!
To answer OP though, no, nothing will stop the "madness" that is Bliz. Why? Because they make decent, reasonably finished, well developed, FUN games in a time when most production houses barely have qualified QA teams in house let alone talented game designers.
No I don't want every single game out there to turn into Blizzard cookie cutters but do I fault a development company that actually puts work and effort into quality games they release? Hells no!

No hate on Blizzard from me, just my view of the limitations they placed on WoW. I have no doubt they will make another game that is wildly appealing to a large audience once again. But I don't think they'll do it by using the WoW formula again, at least not the "level and loot" concept by itself again.
Personally, I was disappointed they didn't go the mmorpg route with Starcraft 2, instead of just remaking the same game.
By the way, nice to see ya again.
World of Warcraft has already done damage to other MMO's before their releases. For some reason or another people who have played WoW seem to think that every game has to live up to it now and that every company is directly competetive with Blizzard. Just the other day I was reading posts on MTGO's forums and even their players seem to think that an online TCG should be competing with WoW just because it's mutiplayer online, saying "if WotC ever hopes to see large sub numbers, like WoW, then they should move to a flat monthly fee instead of charging per card pack. World of Warcraft is the only MMO that Blizzard has it's hands in atm, whereas other companies have their hands in plenty of MMO's and other things. These other companies haven't even been scratched as for profit by Blizzard so why would they even care about competing with WoW? As for the MMO's yet to be released they target a niche audience, meaning yes they want to make a profit, but no they're not going to spend more than it's worth to say "yeah, we killed the WoW monster! They will hope for a good release, good sub numbers, and of course to cut a profit.

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that World of Warcraft®: The Burning Crusade™ sold through approximately 3.5 million copies within one month following its mid-January launch in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.* This includes more than 1.9 million sold in regions that play on North American realms, including more than 100,000 copies in Australasia, and nearly 1.6 million in Europe. World of Warcraft's worldwide subscriber base now numbers more than 8.5 million and is continuing to grow as new and returning players join existing players in the game.
World of Warcraft®'s Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.
Ok now on topic, no nothing will beat WoW, WAR has a chance as the transition from WoW to WAR will be easy as the visuals and game play will be very similar... only time will tell
Most games have already beaten wow in origonaity and inovation. But they have yetto beat Wow in pure numbers.

I'm quite disappointed the road they took with WoW also but I certainly understand it and even respect it to a degree.
I would have liked to see them go the MMO route with Starcraft 2 also but meh, I like the fact that Blizzard knew full well they could have thrown a Starcraft Skin on WoW and made a boat load of money but they decided to make a game they wanted to, that earns some positive karma in my book.
Oh, and always around but the new job has me running circles... always watching though .

WoW will be "beaten". Probably not by any game coming out soon.
But no one thought anyone could beat UO, no one thought anyone would be EQ. Now, no one thinks anyone will beat WoW.
It'll happen, just probably not soon.
Man, you can cut the WoW/Blizzard fanboi-ism in here with a knife its so thick...
Everquest - 2000 - '02
Anarchy Online - '01-'02
Earth and Beyond - '02-'04
Star Wars Galaxies - '03-'06('07)
World of Warcraft - '04-'07
Age of Conan - '08 - shelved.
-Waiting on-
Star Trek Online
SW: The Old Republic
it depends what you classify beat... if u mean get more subscribers than WoW. then probably not. but if you base the quality on that alone then you're lost. lostttt for everrrr.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
you and a million other people want to know the same thing.
the only thing that will beat wow is TIME. it is inevitable. who knows when that will be. dont worry about it and move on.
i wont say wow will be crushed but some major compition in the form of warhammer may in fact give wow a run for its subscribers, they have a smart plan they looked at what blizzard had and saw its cons and basically it resovles them, at least thats what the podcast seem to depect. wow will always have there loyalist and fanboys that simply refuse to give up wow. its a decent game easy to pick up and learn and chances are if your friend is a gamer hes playing it. warhammer seesm to be more grown up than wow so it will attract the mor emature gamers (18-32) for sure. i dont think it'll crush wow but it could make a dent.
Blizzard does make quality games, MMOs that's another story. You need to remember not to mix the two, plus that Blizzard is new in this race.
To say no one can take down the massive force of Blizzard is utter ignorance. Innovation is coming to our MMO genre this year with many new gen MMO titles. This innovation will only continue, how will WoW look then?
I'll tell ya old and withered. Sure it's fun to sit down there and play that NES once in a while but wouldn't want to play the 360 or PS3 more? I rest my case.
There's no need to beat WoW. It apeals to a different audience that is not the MMO hardcore players. What we need is done, a lot of games are better than WoW, and more are coming. The WoW players will be in their own 'total success' niche game and that's all.
It is a question of fangs.

WoW highest rate MMO ever, I think for blizz first shot at MMO (although Diablo is MMO'ish) they aint done to bad.

WoW will evolve and expand, its not set in stone and blizzard ain't stupid.

PS3.. what a load of crap IMHO, give me my Amiga1200 any day
I'm sure World of Warcraft has plenty of hardcore players, more then any other game. the difference is that WoW has both hardcore and casual gamers. in fact, if we look at subscribtions, the more popular WoW became, the more other MMO's started losing subscribers.
WoW is definately not the best MMO. Wait until more games come out. WoW will be brought down just like david brought down goliath.
i think about 2 to 3 years more and wow is going to be dead since all the gameplay may change in that time period and there would be a upgrade in graphic wise that is how i look at it, a game will beat wow but not now

I very much appreciate all the comments made in this topic so far, my question has been answered in the fullest form necessary. Ill continue to read on if anyone else wants to reply thank you
Three questions in the opening post:
For the topic question - "Will anything ever beat WoW?" - the answer is "yes, of course". Why? Because "ever" is a helluva long time, and nothing stays on top (or even alive) forever.
For the second question - "Does anyone know if any possible game coming out in the near future that will finally put an end to this blizzard crazyness?" - this is a matter of opinion. Personally I doubt any game currently in development will kill WoW. Look at EQ - that former king of the hill isn't dead yet.
For the closing question in the first post - "Is there ever going to be a game that will finally put an end to blizzard?" - I can't give an answer, but I think you confuse WoW with Blizzard. Even after WoW closes its doors, Blizzard can stick around for a long time. It's not like they're a one game company who has gambled its very existence on WoW.
I have a question myself: why this wide obsession with killing MMOGs? I kind of compares to people expecting the winning Superbowl / Champions' League team to not win a single game the following season.
