Unbelievable

in Everquest II

So I get patched and get loaded in and such. I am not playing on Befallen since it isn't a PvP server. I head over to Nagafen to make a toon, (since that seems to be the place to be ), well to my surprise, my name is taken. This just drives me through the roof, that people are that damned stupid, and can't make up their own name. I have had this name for 5+ years, and have used it in every game I have ever played without any problem. And yes I say my name, because it is just that, MINE. I made it up years ago for a short story I wrote that was published, (only in a local circle, nothing well known or anything), and liked it so much, I have used it in every game I have gone too since. Now the day has come where someone has stolen it. Is nothing sacred anymore?

    you do realize there are billions of people on earth?  chances are, the name was created by someone else before your spermling was even manufactured in a scrotum ;) LOL. 

     

    trust me, i feel your pain though, i've created alot of names off the top of my head, only to find them taken.. i mean who else names a wizard Nalaar?

    Jesus christ. He got the same idea for a name that you did some years ago - Heck, he might've even made up the name before you.

     

    If you make up a name it doesn't formally become "your" name.

    I have the same problem...i have been using this name for many years.When EQII came out, i brought it and when i wanted to make my toon, the name was taken...now i have a new char with a different name..i dont like it but thats not the end ;>

    I get the name thing since the name I use in games is made up and is based on my last name. However, I once found out that a guy who was in my Lineage 2 clan (years ago) had moved to WoW and used it there because he thought it was so cool. Don't know if he plays anymore or not but that is not the point.

    So yes, I can feel the pain "slightly" because I understand the idea of having made something that is uniquely yours and having someone else use it. however, the other way to look at it is that they thought it was a great name. In some ways you might be flattered. Also, perhaps they got hold of your short story and they really liked it.

    In any case, in the end, it is what it is. either make up a new name (and continually see if they ever delete the character with that name) or move to another server.

     

    In the end you have to put it in perspective.

    Well I guess I've been very fortunate to get my name more often than not. I also have a couple other names I use, but that is usually due to a bad case of Altitis

    Charisi was used in the title of a book publised back in 1845.

    What makes you think noone could have also thought of that name...or any name for that matter BEFORE you did?

    Your statement is kinda selfish. Just because you (and others) made up that name long ago doesn't mean it is yours or theirs. Its a persona and thats all it is.  And it canr be "stolen" since "noone" actually owns those personas.

     

    Just deal with it and move on.

    Wow, this is just about the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.  I guess I should tell me brother, who got our grandfather's middle name, that his middle name, Charisi, is copyrighted to someone 5+ years ago!  Of course, he's almost 30 years old, so I guess we should sue you for illegally using HIS name, since he predated you.

    Word to the un-wise:  even a 5-year can pull up www.google.com and find literary references going back two centuries for the name as well.  Claiming that your 5+ year old literary creation makes the name yours is ludicrous, when you're doing nothing but using a name that was already used over and over again...

    Sheesh.

    Things like this happnes all the time,  Got an odd one though a player in a mmo thought my characters name was cool and managed to name the guld he started after me. Not sure if i should be flattered or not. But i guess if you have a good name even though you are the first person to use it it, others  will use it one way or another, just look at all the people taking character names from books movies etc should the author of the book be upset about that? (thinking back on the Legolas,legolass,leegolas (one of them a gnome) etc etc in wow hmm maybe)

    Almost any name that has 7 letters or less will most likely be used by another person in the world of gaming, heck go to wow homepage and see if you can combine any 6 letters that is pronouncible and not finding anyone using it.

    The human race is an adaptable race i suggest you act as a human in this.

    I have 4 or 5 names that I rotate around depending on what's available at the time. Most of them were random name generated or a variation on a random generated name, but yet, there's usually multiples of all of them lol!
