I've been out of the MMORPG world ever since I threw up my hands at SWG over 3 years ago. Now, I am being enticed by some old friends to get back into the game and we're trying to decide between EQ2 and WoW. My buddies have played both and are indeifferent to which one I choose so here are the things I value most in a MMORPG:
I enjoy leveling quickly so that I can take lower lvl groups on hunts, which means I'll need to be able to solo a lot. However, I do not want to get into a situation where groups don't want/need me because of my one-dimensional character. I really like having pets to tank for/with me, but only if there is some skill involved with attaining that pet. (I had more fun taming rare babies in SWG for new pets than almost anything else). Because of my fighting nature, I want to be able to fight hand-to-hand while being able to tank. I want something that has a high DPS, but am able to take a punch as well.
As far as the game and community go, I couldn't care less about stunning graphics or PvP. I've never been big into PvP because I build my character for hunting and party leading. I can't stand being around a bunch of children who would rather camp a re-spawn than get in the fight. I am more interested in building the most unique character possible than the most powerful "soup du'jour". I enjoy questing equally as much as I do roaming for wandering monsters, but I love discovering new things. Perhaps my most favorite thing though is attaining rare artifacts. Weapons, armor, decorations... anything that is rare and difficult to get. I also like having a house to decorate and call my own. Oh, and money is something I cannot do without. I enjoy crafting if there is a purpose other than just making a few bucks.
So, WoW or EQ2...Can you help me decide??? I appreciate your help!

Sounds like you'd prefer Everquest 2. Pets aren't hard to get - they're summonable with just a spell, but everything else fits the bill. Crafted goods are useful - my 38 Monk is decked out entirely in crafted armor, wielding crafted weapons. Housing is instanced, so you can't decorate the exterior, but you can place tons of different decorative items, furniture, and so forth inside, as well as change the wall, ceiling, and floor coverings. The house placeables are mostly crafted goods, and serve a purpose other than looking pretty - they reduce the amount of status you pay in rent.
Thanks for the response. So the pets are summoned? I was hoping to go out into the wilderness and find dangerous mommas with babies that I can lure away and tame. That was my favorite part of SWG. Teaching them tricks and training them with command words... Plus, there was always the danger that it's momma would smell you and attack.
What race/class would you recommend then in EQ2?
i my self , giving the description you gave me i would also go EQ2 , i'v played WoW's rp servers (2 of them at least) and i must say they dont compare to EQ2's
for class , in EQ2 i am not realy sure my self i am a 28 warden (sub class of the druids)
i haven't RPed in quite some time tho and i know EQ 2 till fit your bill

Wow, it's rp is something you'd see on a saturday morning cartoon and generally the rp is the same. It's usually horrid, and this is comming from a guy who spent 100 hours finding a good rp server in that game. Not good at all, though rarely you will find an engaging story line.
EQ2, While better than WoW's EQ2's general rp is mainly enticed by cyber love, Antonia Bayle anyone? If you think I am bsing ask any of us Bayle vets, it's become sad.
Rp is nearly a dead art and in exchange we have people generally rp'ing for love affairs.
Now something nobody mentioned for good RP, LOTRO-Landroval server. Good stuff thus far but in my opinion the game can be rather bland.
Character race doesn't play a large role. It just gives a few minor bonuses that are insignificant at higher levels. If you really like tanking and dishing out damage, I'd suggest a Berserker or Shadow Knight. I also like my Monk - not as brutal as my Berserker, but he has some handy tricks like feign death and invisibility that make him great for soloing.
All excellent responses folks. Thank you.
It appears that EQ2 may be my calling, as I expected. Now, what are the best/most established servers to play on?
Antonia Bayle, like I said it can be a who's dating who type of thing but it's the most established.
I'll toss in my thoughts. I've been an RPer for a few years now and I've tried both EQ2 and WoW.
WoW did have a lot of the more goofy RP, and a lot of it was bad, but I found the same proportionate amount of bad RP in EQ2. The only difference being that because EQ2 had the smaller community you quickly figured out who had the bad RP and could steer clear of them. In WoW there's so many people that you never know what kind of RP you'll find.
I think the key in both games is to find a strong RP guild to be a part of. WoW seems to lend itself towards more lighthearted and short term RP, EQ2 seems to go towards more serious tones and long term stories. Both are great, and I've met a lot of great RPers (and terrible ones) in both games. It all depends on your persona play style. I will say this though, you have to seek out the RP in WoW. I've never seen so many non RPers on an RP server as in WoW. Once you find a solid guild though it feels less invasive.
In both games to get the new items once you reach max level you have to start looking at the endgame raiding. Of the two games I enjoy the WoW endgame over the EQ2 endgame. Mainly because I think EQ2 armor looks very plain, boring and often times very very ugly. I remember walking through the main city in EQ2 and seeing one of the heavy raiders in their raiding gear to show it off. I knew right then I would never raid because I wouldn't be caught dead in what he was wearing. To contrast that, WoW has some very creative and unique looking armor sets that I actually aim for simply because of how they look. As far as the fun of raiding.. I think EQ2 might have an edge up on WoW in the variety department, but the burning crusade was a step in the right direction for WoW.
So, to sum it up. I think both games have some good RP, and they both have some positives and some negatives. Both games have a free trial. I'd really recommend surfing the forums and finding out what the RP guilds are, then rolling up a free trial and chatting with some of the people there before you make a choice.
Thats why RP is dying though, Clicks tend to band together and stagnate stories or self center stories, nothing wrong with that at all, just don't expect rp to survive close quarters.
Very good insight, Invinci Gal, and maybe the title of this thread has steered the talk into a direction I didn't intend to. While I do enjoy the "RP" aspect of online gaming, it's not my primary goal. I do want to join a guild and be surrounded with more mature gamers who are less likely to act foolish or selfish. I am really into developing a unique character. Whether through skill sets, appearance, accolades, or infamy within the server. I have heard that WoW character builds are somewhat shallow and that you run into "one of yourself" all the time. But, I have also heard that with the outlandish armor sets and weapons, it's easy to set yourself apart from the rest in WoW. Which of these are true?
While I fully intend on taking advantage of the free trials, I don't believe I'll be able to grasp the content of a game in just 1 week.
The only reason I'm asking so many questions regarding which game I should choose is, well aside from being a control freak who needs to research everything to the max, I don't want to get involved with a game that is unsatisfying and miss out on something really great in another game. I know that no single game is perfect, and maybe the sheer numbers of subscribers actually does tell a lot about the game, but I am not always like the general public. I tend to like things that the majority dislike/ignore.
Thanks again for all your help!
i could never stand RPers...in wow BG's every rppvp server had horrible members in it..i guess they just wanna have fun with their "hello sir [insert goofy name here] but meh to each his own i gues
I think both are true for WoW. There's a few favorite face/hair combos that a lot of people choose, and if you go with one of those you'll probably see someone who looks almost if not exactly like yourself now and again. I wouldn't say constantly though. On the other hand, unless you are in a full set of a certain type of gear the odds of seeing someone who is identical is pretty low. So, you might see someone who has the same hair, it will probably be a different color, or they might be a different class which lends to an entirely different look. I guess, in WoW gear defines you more than your character.
In EQ2 I found a lot more customization in my character, however I was very very VERY frustrated (from an RP standpoint) with the fact that there are two sets of models in EQ2. You have no idea how you appear to another player. So, you almost have to play two identities, and some players keep the alternate models on for some races, others don't. It gets confusing and if you're attached to how your character looks then it may bother you knowing at least half the population isn't seeing that. Also, like I said before, a lot of armor in EQ2 is just downright ugly.
As for gameplay.. WoW is very fast paced and action heavy, every class has their role and any class can choose their spec, which can vastly change the function of that class. For example, a priest can go holy to heal, or shadow to do DPS (on par with a lot of other classes too.) In EQ2 I found the class functions to be a little blurred and things to move at a much much slower pace. There really wasn't as much of a specific makup to a group and if you had a free spot a lot of options would work.
In WoW there are a ton of people.. be that good or bad. If you like heavy populations.
I ended up having more fun in WoW. I've always been a fan of fast paced action games, and an avid RPer. The two meshed pretty well and I can usually find something to entertain me no matter what mood I'm in. I won't lie though, WAR is looking really appealing and WoW does have it's faults. It's entirely possible I could change my tune when WAR hits open beta
Healthful and vibrant roleplay community of Antonia Bayle server in Everquest 2.
I did not know many people roleplayed in WoW.
Boycott EA Games. RIP Sim City.
If you're a roleplayer do yourself a favor.. keep away from WoW.
Everquest 2 on Antonia Bayle has an AWESOME roleplay community. You'll really like it. Very mature and very active.

I've decided to play the WoW free trial first, as it seems to be the easiest to grasp. Now, regarding the 2 factions... am I fair game as soon as I step into the game or are there certain PvP zones I have to go to in order to PvP? Also, are there open PvP servers where every zone is PvP? If so, I want to stay away from those...
On the comment of Rp'ers being crappy in battlegrounds? Pfft, Shadow Council at one time had some of the top Pvp'ers for both AB and AV. (Thats an rp server).
Rp'ers aren't bad at pvp, the majority of players PERIOD are bad at pvp.
