I do not know the server populations for either game lately, i have been out of EQ's for some time.
although.....after SoE took away the ability, in EQ1, to see Server Populaces on the login screen area some websites have popped up giving lists of the servers and the present number of player on each.
I do not know these websites URL's...but im sure someone here does.

that site simply counts characters in the database of both active and inactive accounts, same as EQII players. Just as a sidenote there have been 1, 455, 530 characters created on all EQII servers, assuming EQII players is accurate. Back to topic Antonia Bayle has always had the most subs in my opinion. A good community also. I have not played since last fall but at that time AB still had a decent population, I would not call it packed but there were enough players for it to be fun.
I left eq2 for a considerable amount of time (June '05 - december '06). Coming back, despite a much lower player base in the sub-60 levels, the amount of solo quests in the game throughout the three expansions made leveling and getting the AA experience very simple and linear. I was able to find groups when I wanted, and if I wanted to jsut play 2 hours or so and finish off quests there were usually locations with a number of quests that gather items and credit in the same location. By the time you lvl up, you'll have likely met many of the upper end characters on your server playing alts and shouldn't have a problem working your way into a guild that fits your playstyle.
Antonia Bayle is by far the most populated server.
As to buying the expacs, you don't have to, you can play for quite some time with just the original game, but you will be missing out on some of the best parts of EQII. Also you will find it harder to find groups because most often groups are heading into dungeouns in one of the expacs.

you can get a new cd which is on sale for eq1...includes all xpaks , 20 bucks.
yes it is still running, but may not be easy to settle into a guild and or find people playing in the numbers one would or may expect.
eq2 is goin well...seems alot of people play it with enough frequency that grouping may not be a hardship to do, as with many other mmorpgs.
just a matter of picking a more, or the most populated server .

ok thanks
The most populated server is Antonia Bayle, which is a roleplay server. The other most populated is Nagafen, which is a PvP server.
Boycott EA Games. RIP Sim City.

Lucan DLere, Vox, and Mistmoore have a lot of players as well as the others mentioned above.
As for the expansion - I'd recommend it. The Echoes of Faydwer box you can buy in stores includes all previous expansions so it's a great value, or you can get it online here: http://www.direct2drive.com/6/4362/product/Buy-EverQuest-II:-All-In-One-Compilation-Download
Not to mention all the newer zones in the expansion look amazing.
