The journey.....the excitment of exploring wide open lands. Wondering if the next turn off the beaten path leads to certain death. Or the chance you may succeed the oncoming attack to find that rare loot.
It's a mix of a lot of stuff that makes MMO's really worth playing. To me, it's the interaction with other players. The aholes, nice people, people who can't speak English and groups such as clans all running around the world makes it diverse and enjoyable to me.
Way too many mmorpgs have ready made paths for player characters, done by developers. It's like developers is telling, this is what You gonna do. It's like single line quest journey what development team did design for You. That how ever isn't the mmorpgs what I like.
I want freedom build my house to somewhere and select some profession care for my character. I don't want to do same quest what everyone else is doing. I want virtual world simulation what allows me to express my self the way I want, not how developers wants. I want more realistic and logical game world simulations, not some level griding mmorpgs.
Other here too. Freedom to do what You want in everything.

well i should have just quoted this instead of posting above
I think it is interesting to note that player interaction, whether socially or through combat, is the primary interest of MMO gamers in that poll. Interaction with NPCs and Questing is at the bottom. Yet many of the new MMOs coming out focus on NPC storylines and repetitive Questing. It's frustrating to be an old-school MMO gamer right now...

Exactly... It's like you get no "goals" of your own. You're just lead in one direction... And the quests are so, so, so, so generic (which doesn't give the players any feel of purpose...additionally, everyone else does those quests too...) Oh, and these days the quests give experience for completing them too, to the point where just plain hunting (aka "grinding" to some of you) isn't viable to advance anymore...
Edit: I used to pick pvp before, but now, I realize I enjoy exploration alot, so I chose that... However, to be honest, I need the variety of things. It's essential for the experience, especially since many categories give pluses to other categories...

I would say that MMO would suck if it was the most exciting feature to me haha!

He just described AOC's main selling point.

You left out character development. So I chose other.
I like to build up my character and tweak him hoping I do it just right.

I sadly know people who only buy/play mmos if the clothing is revealing. Pretty pathetic, tbh.

"Other": discovering the game system and design, new ideas and twists, and seeing what reactions players have to them.
