Hmmm, what do you guys think?

Technically I guess it is a Fruit, but it just seems so much like a vegatable.

    It's a fruit.

It has almost no qualities shared by other vegetables. It does, however, share qualities with its' fruit counterparts.

it doesn't matter how it's actually classified, the tomato will always be a vegetable in my eyes.

The US Supream Court says it's a Vegetable

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nix_v._Hedden

Apparently the context is importantly.  It's a fruit in botanical terms but a vegetable in culinary terms.

Wow, lol I can't believe they actually had a court over this. But seriously its the government court, and if it was a vegetable they get taxes paid on it and get more money, so obviously they'll rule it a vegetable.

    It s a vegetable.

    It's not sweet ffs.

Would you put strawberries sauce on spaghetti?

    Or cramberries on a pizza?

Fruit is really sweet and it goes on cakes, on Ice cream or in a milkshake, not on savoury food.

Tomato is quite sour and although you can eat it like a fruit, because is quite juicy unlike other vegetables which are quite hard, it is not a fruit.

Who actually think Tomato is a fruit?

I wasn't aware there was even any doubt about it, not that it actually matters................

It's a fruit in scientific terms, but in all other usages it's considered a vegetable.

It's a fruit that tastes like a vegetable.

I hope some day we can all put aside our racisms and prejudices and just laugh at people

Would you put pineapple on gammon?

    Or apple sauce on pork?

    mmm, anyone hungry now?

Weirdly, botanically speaking, the tomato counts as a berry.

Fruit. Botanically, a tomato fruit is a berry consisting of seeds within a fleshy pericarp developed from an ovary. Fruits of L. esculentum have two to several carpels. There is extreme variability of fruit characters such as size, shape, exterior color of mature and immature fruit, and interior flesh color. http://www.uga.edu/vegetable/tomato.html

Actually a tomato is sweet.  A striped tomato is very sweet.

What's the dif. between a grape and a cherry tomato?

Also, sugar is a common ingredient to add to speghetti sauce.

Cranberries, def. not sweet.  Very bitter fruit.  Cranberry juice is the best things since sliced bread to.

Lemon?  Nothing sweet about them, but the rines are really good.

Off the top of my head, I think that the tomato is classified as a fruit because of it's seeds,  or perhaps because they're acidic.

Ever had apple pie made out of squash?  My grandmother tricked me once by giving me a slice of "apple pie".  Couldn't tell the dif. and I hate squash.

Pumpkins?  Is this a fruit or a vegetable.  Look an awfull lot like a mellon to me, and isn't a mellon a fruit?  Cantelope and wattermellon are fruits, but squash and zukini (sp?) isn't?

    Cheese cake?

    Carrot cake?

    Wish Darkfall would release.

    Cooking yes, always for cooking.

Problem with corn is it strips the damn soil and ends up reducing potency.. Of cooking.

I think It's a vegie. And that means that it is, for my word is law.... yes... If it's a fruit then the cucumber is a fruit as well. And if the cucumber is fruit, then my entire existance lost it's meanining.

THE TOMATO IS NOT A FRUIT, DAMN IT!!!

Hmm, I think the cucumber is a sqash.

    Your meaning is still validated.

It's a fruit. Science says that if it has a seed in it, it's a fruit. If it doesn't, it's a Vege.

  • AstropuyoAstropuyo Member RarePosts: 2,178

Interesting, though I have heard that, what about pumpkins etc.

Also odd note: Does that mean that seedless cherries aren't fruits?

    UH OH.

    Exactly

    That's what I meant.

Tomato technically might be a fruit, but is not considered a fruit in the kitchen.

    It is a vegetable.

Cucumber technically is a fruit, but people always considered them as a Veg.

Take the veg salad and the fruit salad as example.

Would you mix Tomatos with strawberries, peaches and pears in a fruit salad?

And would you put peaches with cucumbers, tomatoes and potatoes for a veg salad?

That's how you normally associate fruit or vegetables.

If you like to eat Tomatoes and Peaches it's up to you, it won't kill you, but certainly it won't make it pleasant to your tastebuds.

    It is all about definitions.

If you wwanna stick with the dictionary definition, that's fair enough, scientifically tomatoes are fruit.

But in the popular culture tomatoes are associated with other vegetables because are not sweet enough to be considered fruit, and they are mainly NOT used for the same dishes that other fruit are used for, like cakes, Ice creams and milkshakes.

You might have the odd tomato used in Ice creams but is more of an exotic thing than the norm.

Generally Tomato don't blend well with the rest of the fruit.

    Therefore tomatoes are vegetables

    Ugh, I hate this argument.

Tomatoes should be wiped off earth.
