... those MMORPG's that had been launched and open for all in Alpha stage, then on to beta -> Character Wipe, New update -> Character Wipe, Beta 2 -> Character wipe and so on...
The endless beta game... The great game, the game that where you really felt you made a better character each time.
It was like playing a great game with a bunch of people, then all of the sudden everything is wiped out, you have to start all over, with the same peopple... But this time you are smarter than last time, and you can see the world is changing, and you become better...
I think this is one of my best MMORPG experience to date. The game was Helbreath, and i loved it, and i still do... But i dont think i will ever play it again, simply because it doesnt live up to the standards all the new MMORPG's does, yet i still think it is better.
And i think the reason for that is the experience... I saw a world and a community come alive. That's maybe what a MMORPG is to me...
What is a MMORPG to you?

An mmo to me, is what Eq1 was in its prime.
I understand your thrills from character wipes though, keeps the game going to some degree. Personally I think they should design an mmo with perma death, should you die, your dead for good, roll a new toon and try again.
But no light shall ever shine upon this imagined masterpiece more than likely. /cry
Uh, I can't think of one MMO I've played since the late '90's that wiped everyones characters
Currently waiting for - Perfect World English, Age of Conan
How to play Perfect World in english
Currently messing with - Requiem Online
For a game to implement perma death, it needs to be focused on things other than character. If in wow, you lvl 70 tier 5 equiped char gets deleted, would you still play? No, because the character is everything. That's all the game is, making your char stronger and stronger through gear.
Obviously, with perma death you would most likely die long before getting to max lvl. So, in order to make it into somethign other than an endless grind to max lvl which you'll never see, game must offer somethign else. Like dynamic world which you can change. Thus, even if your char dies, the things you did in the world would still be there. So you wouldn't feel like all the time spent playing that char was wasted.
PS: shadowpool.com too bad it has been on hold for about a year after devs ran out of money. But it has some nice concepts so might be worth checking out for those who want an mmo with perma death.
ahh to look back on the days where MMO didnt mean a combat grinding race to max level
when games were actually worlds
if only if only
Ultima Online
UO, definitelly. And then, SWG.
my first MMO was Realm Online.. it was a cool game back in the day its like 12 years old or older.
ohh SWG and the fun we once had
I'm one of those unheard of UO beta testers!
I still have my disks. It pissed me off when they took backpacks out, added em in and took em out again.
I liked seeing my pack on my back.
Oi' played that thing too long.
I never had any character wipes in any game what i have played.
On my opinion Ultima Online is most interesting mmorpgs, because it's one of the oldest and still it have more subscribers than many newer game what has had more subscriber than Ultima Online. I think it has still over 100 000 subscriber after 10 years, what is better than many other mmorpgs. All this with 2D isometric graphics in today. Maybe it's because it's more like a sandbox game with skill system?
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
Without a doubt my best mmorpg experience was old UO.
Mine was 'The Myth Of Soma' I loved that game with a passion and then I quit, come back and the community had dropped because Game Network sold there game to another company or something like that. It is still going but last I knew it was pretty much dead.
Unless you explain in more detail, this makes absolutely no sense. You are saying "It isn't not better than the new MMORPG's, but it is better than the new MMORPG's"
So you won't ever play it again because it is better than the new MMORPG's?? Instead, I'm assuming you will be playing the new MMORPG's, because they are worse? This makes absolutely no sense.
The reason why you don't play it anymore is obviously not the reason you said. Explain in more detail or we'll just think you're crazy.
The original Neverwinter Nights on America Online.
That's an Old School MMORPG

First thing, I don't really think NWN is considered an MMO. Isn't it like a max of 8 players? Anyway, I used to play Asheron's Call back in the day. Mostly on Leafcull, but I was known to play on Darktide as well. From there, I went on to play a little EQ, but wasn't very impressed with the game. I think it was Shadowbane after that and from there, who knows?
Ah, what makes a good mmo for me...
My first mmo, FFXI was, at the time i got it, just about awesome, it was 1: Final Fantasy (them days i felt you couldn't go wrong with good ole FF) 2: A lot of players playing together, again awesome 3: It supported a joypad, a feature i'd been wishing a lot for back then as i didn't like to strain my wrists 4: It just had the feeling of a big universe with a grand storyline.
I became tired of FFXI though, i realised that i was just too much of a soloer to ever make it far in that game and thus i quit. (Several years later i found the good old spark in me, a lust to play FFXI though at the time i had discarded the paper on which i wrote my ID, so end of story sadly)
The best mmo i have participated in (To my liking of course) was the old SWG, it just had that huge sense of freedom and a tightknit community, i had a good time playing this right from The Combat upgrade days up until The NGE era, NGE just took all that freedom, crammed it inside a box, shook said box and took a tiny bit out to integrate with their new vision, SWG as a FPS, that vision struck very hard with me and a lot of the other players, i think they used to call it the great exodeus.
Anyway, SWG in the golden age with a few tweaks to make it "Modern" would be my ideal mmo, unlimited freedom and a player handled economy, sadly EVE doesn't go well with me, i just find the gameplay boring and too much of a "Stock market" game to really tickle my fancy.
