Thinking about starting GW....where to start???

testament1testament1 Member Posts: 36

So my wife and I are currently droning in the World of Warcraft. We want something new. We played Guild Wars before, but at the time we only had one PC, so we never got into it. Now that we have two, we were thinking about getting back into Guild Wars.

We really don't like to PvE too much, but PvP is something that we really enjoy. So my main question is....which expansion should I get first? I have the original Guild Wars game, but only one copy. So whichever expansion we get, we will get x2 of. And is there a point in getting all of the expansions, including the original game itself?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also, if we were to each get both Nightfall AND Factions, could one of us play an Assassin, but go through the PvE content of Nightfall? Can I mix and match the classes and go through the PvE content of all the Guild Wars expansion I own?

Factions is the best for PvP

Secrom feels like be the Sticky Thread Sign Pointer today while I am being the talkative one...  While he is right our little sticky tread covers a lot of topics, I will throw out some answers.

For increased PvP options, as mentioned above get Factions.  The reason this is said, is this is the only campaign that gives you access to Alliance Battles (AB).  There are 4 v 4 v 4 (basically 12 v 12)  battles that move a territory line back and forth allowing some peoples Guild Alliances to own towns.  All of the games including Factions have access to the rest of PvP and interconnect in the Battle Isles.

To get the most out of PvP, I would recommend getting all three campaigns because you will have more skill choice options and therefore a chance at a stronger build.  It is totally possible to have success using only one campaigns skills, but as mentioned, you will be limited.

As for your characters, yes, as long as you link your accounts (per computer, not you and your wifes)...you can take your characters through all of the content of each game.  Like my main character has completed all the missions and secondaries....now is about to finish all the mapping of all three games.

Have fun with the game and I highly suggest once you get settled in GW find a PvP centered guild and get immersed in it.  You might get frustrated by a guild that is PvE centered and only does some PvP being that that seems to be your main focus.

Agreed it would be in your best interest to purchase both factions and nightfall, so you won't be limited in skills when going up against other teams in PvP. If you are to get one then factions would be the next logical choice since the PvP content in the 2nd expansion is by far the better of the 3 in PvP combat. Also between the 2 newer expansions the assassin is the best expansion class in my opinion, and will offer better pure or hybrid opportunities for your PvP enjoyment. The primary classes from the original game are the dominant PvP classes, but again they are dominant  due to the additional skills that have been introduced from factions and Nightfall.

  • Factions has the faction battles for PvP.  Nightfall has the Hero battles for PvP.

Class wise faction has the Assassin and Ritualist while Nightfall has Dervish and Paragon.

Its pretty close if you had to chose one.  I would say the Nightfall classes slightly edge out the Factions classes for PvP, but meh that all depends really.  I like the Nightfall skills slightly better but that is really really gonna depend on build so its almost pointless to say.

You might want to look into the PvP unlock deals instead of the PvE campaigns.  Personally I really like the Nightfall PvE campaign, its the only one I have actually finished all the way through.

I would also say only buy the PvP packs if you are not planning on playing any PvE...I mean why "waste" money on that if you end up buying the whole game which depending on where you go will be cheaper than buying the PvP packs on the online store.

like said earlier get the pvp packs but try to get into a decent  guild that pvps thats willing to help people starting out. So they can show u the ropes and  help u guys become decent pvp players. Also, once u start pvping look at observer mode to see what other people are running  will help u think of builds.
