NO. Any version of Vista It's bad for gaming. Some games don't even run in Vista... others have a loss of performance compared with XP.
Stick with XP. Bypass Vista.
Vista will be an option may be in 2009 when all the games arround were based on DirectX10... but today it's a very bad choice for a gaming ring... with XP you will get better performance with the same hardware, as long as you keep 4GB of RAM or less.
In short: Vista sucks for gaming in 2007 & surely also in 2008.
If you don't need 4 GB of RAM, you should stay away from Vista.
1. Political reasons. Read the EULA. You accept that MS is contacted and data are transferred without even asking you!
If you are a fan of the further destruction of the private sphere and total control of all citizens, then go for Vista and accept the EULA.
If you want to make them pay for that, do not accept the EULA and send it back.
2. Technical reasons. Vista is slow and hungry. It's incredible how shameless M$ wastes ressources.
The compatibility probelms were mentioned already.
No one needs Vista and everyone with some knowledge about computers, will try to avoid and not touch it.
Dont listen to the Anti-Vista garble. These are the same people that cried when XP came out and didnt want to let go of Windows 2000.
It will be fine with Business, espically if youre getting it for free. Why waste $100+ on XP when you can get Vista for free? Come on, be realistic here.

All of my games work fine with Vista...with the lone exception of NeverWinter Nights, which I knew going into and even then it worked for some people. I am just too lazy to DL patch while I am playing other things.
Stick with the free Vista...it will be fine.

I can get XP for less than £60

If your getting Vista for free, then go for it. I have no problems playing games on Vista. Recent games im playing are F.E.A.R, Stalker, Neverwinter Nights 2, Lotro, EQ2, Vanguard, Prey.
Majority of those people that tell you to stay away from it have never even tried Vista out.
on school test computers I was mildly impressed by vista's addons, was kinda easy to do since I was expecting utterly pointless features. it's areo(and all the stuff you can add to it) and rapid search, at first we couldn't figure out how to get the command prompt up(to be pleasantly surprised that just by using cmd in the rapid search brought it up), internet explorer 7 worked on vista, it had drivers/emulators included in it that weren't included in XP, vista loaded up a bit faster than XP, and I noticed no slow down at all for general user stuff(games are not general user stuff).
I personally think vista would be great for media users. but that it'd be bad for bussiness(more distractions), and gaming(it is very true that it uses more resources than XP from memory it was about 2 times as much)
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
or run both like im doing..........
do a dual boot in bios.
some things work better in xp as of now and most of that is downloads you dont pay for, such as open office..............
