The NCsoft legend believes that the genre is stagnant and that all the games currently on the market are either Ultima Online or EverQuest with better graphics

Tbh they're all EQ clones cause if there was a UO with better graphics i'd be playing it lol.
I would have to disagree with that!
First of all there is Anarchy Online which is nothing like EQ or UO and then there is EVE Online which is nothing like AO, UO, or EQ!
Eve is a terrible game, though.
I think what he is saying is that people want a new and advanced fantasy game, not a clone.
Well Tabula Rasa is just everquest in a scifi world with guns instead of swords. It does nothing new. Same old boring pve quests. Its just a gimmik for those who are tired of the fantasy setting.

210,000 people have been wrong before. Seriously. But if they enjoy it so be it. But that doesn't make it a good MMORPG. The 'game' , whatever it is a good implementation of, is apparently desired by some.
You are a fool if you claim it is a bad game.
WoW I don't like but it is a good game.
it definitely feels like a single person FPS. very twitch. gotta love vital targetting.
what I dont like about it, is that Garriots name is tagged to it and its nothing like any of the open RPGs or sandbox MMO that hes assisted in.
in all honesty, the only thing Garriot was really successful in was Ultima 7 and Ultima Online. Ultima 4 "may" warrant some acknowledgement, but this day and age theres been many a developer that has far exceeded anything he ever did single player.

If a game is making a profit, it's arguably a "good" game.
I suspect RG hasn't really kept up with the niche titles, like Eve or ATiTD, or the new-UI games like Neocron and whatnot. That's fine. There's only so much keeping-up you can do when you're, like, building games for a living and whatnot. How aware can he really be beyond the games that have more than 500k subscribers? From that point of view, everything's a ripoff of DikuMUD. And with the NGE, the only "like UO" there was is no longer.
And articles like that are generally for people who aren't playing these games anyway, so wouldn't know a Warhammer from a Warcraft. The people who make business decisions about these things may start with an article like this. But they've surrounded themselves with people who'll be damned sure they know what's up.
So, basically, he's right and wrong. Right for the audience, wrong for the facts.
Oh really??

At first glance Tabula Rasa doesn't really have a lot of appeal to me. I'll look into a bit more, but just from what I've seen it doesn't look that promising.

new fantasy mmos are pointless. wow has that whole market sewn up for years to come. besides it's played out. enough. no more fantasy crap devs!
If a game is making a profit, it's arguably a "good" game.
that wasn't what he meant though.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I really wish there were a UO clone, I would play it. Instead, with a few notable exceptions, we have had a ton of Everquest clones with WoW clones now starting to appear. Richard Garriott is part of the problem releasing his WoW clone with guns.
World Builder GM
Hero's Journey
Tho I'll agree its part of the problem.. as Auto Assault is um .. well ya.
Part of the problem would be that RG wasn't as involved with UO.. compared to the single player ultimas.
If you look at UO ---> SWG... well um ya.. because Designer Dragon aka Raph Koster was on both of those.
A skill based game with free style character development (SWG was more restrictive than UO and I don't want to talk about bugs etc because all games have/had those). Modern graphics engine that runs better than Vanguard and a non clunky UI... ya I'd be there.
I didn't leave UO or SWG because I was bored (more like I was driven out). Every other MMO I've played has bored me to tears before the first 30 days were up.
I was still playing UO in 2002 when I finally quit and well I don't think I need to say when I quit SWG because there is no more need to talk about that.
They keep following the same model.. and keep having games with little to no success or long term population anyway. (when games that are 4 to 5 years old have less population than a game that is 10 years old or 8/9 years old.. there is a problem).
Oh well I have babbled enough... last thing I have to say is.. from a design stand point.. imho... the class/level system is a core design flaw when put into the MMO concept. That is just imho tho.. and it would take to long to explain why I feel that way in this post.
Tabula Rasa is a great game. Great.
Revolutionary though? Hell no. There is not one feature in that game that is 'amazing' in any way. Nor 'revolutionary'. The game is great fun, and greatly buggy. It's definitely a nice atmosphere, and setting... yet he speaks of respawns for no apparent reason... TR has that. He speaks of 'good AI'... I laugh uncontrollably at that one. TR's AI is no better than that of WoW, outside the instances.
It's just funny, because everything he speaks of, he speaks of like it's "The whole game should work like this, not like it does now" except his game works just like WoW. Things don't respawn in WoW for no reason... in an instance. Hey wait, neither does yours. It's like... hmm... could Richard Garriot be lying? Nah, lol.
Great game, but if he's going to say all this, at least make it true, before you spurt it all out Richard.
ya you pretty much hit it. he does speak as if TR is some sort of mold breaking MMO which its not.. not at all.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
UO was a world
not a combat grind
Just like Auto Assault, TR doesn't know who their target audience is. Is it traditional MMO players or FPS/3rd person Action crowd? What exactly is it?
And why is the main focus PvE? Isn't the genre already full of those? So where exactly is the innovation?

Yeah
Hmm lets see Ultima online was my first mmo and oh my god it was the best experience in a mmo ive every had. Now Ive burned out on the fantasy genre. And now that he is a part of this game Tabula Rasa I cant wait. Its the game Ive been looking for more fast paced than other mmos and better yet its Sci-Fi!!! This is great this is what ive been looking for. Only thing im wishin it will have is houseing of some sort (even if its instanced). I honestly think its better that way anyway so anyone can have a house. I played on the great lakes server and I had to pay out of the whooo haa to get a small house. which sucked. Even if he didnt make this game I would still play it because its everything ive been waiting for! Its just im so freaking tired of gnomes and elves and crap ahh!
Many time people say something is bad game, because they don't like it. Just because they don't like it, others can like it. So it's more like personal taste and opinion.
If we talk about Ultima Online, what does make it different then? Some may say, it's because it doesn't have levels, but that's not the only different. UO is more like sandbox game, where players have a lot more freedom to do what they like. There is not set classes, You can build houses almost anywhere You like and so on.
Todays mmorpgs are more like grid for stories, where You starts playing the game in this beautiful looking world, but You travel path has be design by developers. You have to do sertain quest to advanve in You linear path or grid for levels. The goal is about play the story or grid for levels. Basicly sayed, todays mmorpgs are more simple than before.
Don't get wrong there is inventive mmorpgs what tries to be different, but develoers still follow this EQ path and are just making it even worst what EQ was. Because in orginal EQ there was more choises than todays mmorpgs. Players call them EQ clones because those games are all about griding levels, games goal is about levels nothing more.
MMORPG.COM has worst forum editor ever exists
I really think that RG has some very interesting things to say about MMO's but I agree that he is talking out his butt lately. He is painting TR to be some sort of MMO renaissance when it not. In fact the psuedo FPS element really is just SWG: NGE in a nutshell. If memory serves, that idea was pretty soundly rejected by the MMO community and about killed the game (among other reasons included in the changes) SWG is enjoying a slight resurgence NOt because NGE has gotten better / improved but because they have changed alot of the mechanics BACK to the old way.
IMHO, TR is heading for trouble, not Auto Assault scale trouble or technical disaster scale trouble like Vanguard but acceptance trouble as they are promising something the game is not.
The problem in part as I see it with MMO's is this:
The SAME guys (and I wrote this before a few years ago) who started the genre are still making and controlling the developement of it. MMO development has not changed because the same people are making the same games with improved graphics. Where is all the fresh new talent? Where is the new next generation of designers? The old guard is still calling all the shots and that is one of the core issues with the genre. The same people are basically still controlling Turbine, SOE, NCSoft, Mythic. There is no influx of fresh new ideas.
Dinosaurs still rule our world.
