Which MMORPG would suit me?

The first MMORPG I ever played was SWG back in 2004/2005. I really loved that game. I wasn't into the PVP at all. In fact I used to just play as a master image designer and taylor with a few pistol skills on the side. I really enjoyed the populated servers and just hanging out in the image design tents. I stopped playing because I was playing on my dad's pc and I moved house. Anyway from the forums I'm getting the impression that SWG has changed alot since when I used to play it - I really want to come back to it but have been put off by manay negative comments I read on the internet. Particularly that you are not fixed to a particular class and can't multi skill anymore :( Should I give it another try?

I tried World of Warcraft and I really got bored quickly as there wasn't any community and the lack of player housing etc. was a bit depressing. Then I tried Lineage 2 and that was no good to me either because the economy was hyper inflated and it felt like such a grind and there was no real atmosphere or role playing element that I could find. Finally I tried Vanguard which looked really promising but unfortunately the population is so low that it just feels like such a lonely game :'(

Basicly I just wondered if there are any MMORPGs out there with a grown up community spirit and which don't place all the emphasis on PVP. I've been playing second life as well but that doesn't have any back story or feeling of peril etc. I really miss the old SWG but I'm frightened that if I go back now I would be really disappointed.

Should I give Everquest 2 a try of DoAC? What are the populations like? I heard Saga of Ryzom is quite good.... Any suggestions for me?

You could try EQ2, Lotro or Ryzom. EQ2 is like nice in all, Lotro is more about lore and Ryzom has good community, but it's little PvP heavy for PvE player.

I tried them all and like EQ 2 the best.  A lot of people, tens of thousands, are joining EQ 2.  A really good expansion, based on a lot of fascinating themes from EQ 1, called Rise of Kunark is due to release this November.

SWG is considerably different from when you last played. However, it is still very playable. Your Image Designer no longer exists as it did, being rolled up into a new class. But it is worth checking out if you loved the game previously. Just expect everything to be different

I would further the recommendation on EQ2, though I don't play it anymore. It's a good environment with a good breadth of options if you're looking to do more than just fight all the time. The most recent expansion (featuring the Fae) also features a very nice new graphical style that sets this content apart from the rather bland stuff that launched. It's a worthy game overall that gets ignored because it got steamrolled by WoW launching weeks later.

Another one to consider would be LoTRO, which right now has a lot of semblance to EQ2, but which will be growing in a different direction in time. It's also a lot easier on aging computers than EQ2 is, and maintains it's graphical and aural beauty well. And on DX10-ready machines it just looks awesome (without DX10 even, steer clear while you can) :)

Further, for even more creation/customization/community, you might want to check out Second Life. This place is not for everyone of course, but if you liked ID in SWG, you may fit right in. There's no strict gameplay though. You basically build everything yourself and/or buy/rent it from others. It's great for the CAD designer in all of us ;)

Finally, for old skool customization fun, Ultima Online, one of the grand daddy's of the genre. This game has changed more than any other MMO out there, but still maintains a strong community.

Everquest II does seem to look extremely promising. One thing about LOTR that concerned me is that it doesn't seem to let you play as evil..... I may well be wrong though.

How about DoAC? Any views on this one? Looks like quite an interesting concept. ^_^

I personaly don't like LOTR but yea EQ2 is good

Lotro Wow or EQ2. A lot of people get confused about the concept of community. But in my opinion the community that a game should be judged by is the community that you make/find for yourself. If you log onto any public game and expect maturity, fun, and all that other good stuff on the public chats yer just giving humanity too much credit.

    Sad but so very true.

I would try EvE online or Ryzom. Everquest 2 is a good game also, but if you didn't like WoW there isn't much of a difference.

DAoC's strong point is PvP to be honest, but on the other hand it does have a lot of PvE to offer as well.

Right now, the classic servers have plenty of people playing them if you decide to start up there.

You might like DAoC's PvP though, at least the battlegrounds which are quite populated on classic.

Image Designer who doesn't like PvP and you say EvE?

Uhh anyways, I'll have to root for EQ2 and Lotro too

Lotro has a really neat music system which you might enjoy. However as far as I know the community isn't really huge.

EQ2 has a huge community though and probably a decent amount of people for roleplaying,
and you get to furnish your own home which is really neat.

Sadly t here aren't many games like old SWG,
and surely not when it comes to Social Professions...
I wish there were more and I hope there will be more soon enough.

Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
    It all sucked.

Agreed, community is the friends you make , but it also helps when your enemies arent borderline retarded also :)

    Try Ryzom. Avoid EQ2.

What are the pros or Ryzom and reasons for avoiding EQ 2? I'm trying to gage all sides of opinion really. I've made mistakes in the past with Vanguard and Lineage 2.

In Lineage and Vanguard there didn't seem much opportunity to network mainly due to the fact that whenever I played either it just wasnt too populated....and Lineage was just a grind-fest though visually it was stunning.

I've whittled it down to 2 really Ryzom and EQ2 I think.

i havent tried eq2 yet but i plan to try the free trial later today, but ive heard it seems to have come a long way since its release. im afriad you wont be able to find a mature comunnity cause kids play in all mmo's nowadays. but i would also recommend ffxi. for a mmo the quest and story line is really good. cutscenes are a plus. although it can be a bit frustrating waiting for a party at times  but there are tons of other things you can be doing while waiting

EQ2 is little easyer to solo and is more in PvE spirit.

Ryzoms PvE side is little more affect by PvP.

It's hard to say much, because they are both good games. It's more about what taste player has. I have played both, but don't play them anymore . Reasons why I don't are different. First I'm pure PvE player. When I played EQ 2 I did find it beutiful game and well done. My only problem was that it was too linear and not so much character  customations. EQ 2 has nice game atmosphere and npcs even talk You. Craftign is also good. I played also Ryzom and it has nice mature community what helps a lot. Enemies are very hard to defeat but You gonna join to guild anyway. So there is gonna be a lot of things to do. Half the game is about crafting, it has very strong hold there, because it's very needed. Combat with enemies is hard, but little booring in later. I left the game because PvP outposts. They are consent content in the game, but when You belong to big guild what owns outpost, thing become little harder for PvE player. Like because I don't PvP and others did, I was alone many times. What I'm saying if You play Ryzom, it's better if You like both PvE and PvP side. That way You enjoy the hole content of the game.

How is the lowbie population in Ryzom these days?  Back when I played there was everyone doing the (new at the time) newbie island, everyone doing the high end content.. and no one in between.. (or at least thats how it appeared)

Has there been any change in that regard?

DAOC has been my favorite MMO iv ever played, but to be honist  its not a game you would like, it puts 80 or 90% on pvp/rvr and as you said before thats not what u want.

the pve is mostly just mindless killing, you get a group that wants to xp with u and then u kill 100000000000000000 of the same mobs until you level out of that area then you do it again.  when you get to 50 there are dragon raids which are fun, player held raids that normaly have 80-300 people of any level and go out to kill a extremly hard mob, although with a properly set up group its possible to kill it with 1 group.

TOA could be fun for you,  artifacts are some of the best items in the game which look unique, you need 3 scrolls that drop randomly off of specific mobs and then you need to kill a boss mob that will give you credit for killing the mob.  Masterlevels also might be fun for you because they take a raid to do it that ranges in numbers like a dragon raid and you kill a few boss mobs and then you get new abilitys for doing it.

Like i said before daoc is by far, no game has even came close for me, the best mmorpg made today but its definitly not for everyone

DaoC RvR is similar to its pve. You get a good group and farm smaller or less experienced groups for realm points :P

I would say go with EQ2.. i do really like the sound of DAOC but i did trial it back last year and could not get into it..

tho i advise to trial it yourself as well you might like it...

But EQ2 is really strong and has to be one fo the best games out there at the moment..
