at the comic-con and i gotta say it is really well done and polished. Although the ship combat was kinda slow, and when i boarded the enemy ship, it only gives you like 8 people out of the dozens of crewmen on your ship. Avatar combat is pretty good. You gotta concentrate on it the whole time considering there is no auto attack. From what i saw it was o.k. Although i only scratched the surface of the game.

Ship combat in this era was indeed painfully slow, and close combat with the personal weapons of the day does require total concentration. I would say the OP's comments show that the designers have accurately represented their subject matter.
Agreed with the OP, its unique somewhat but a bit slow paced in naval combat for me personally..avatar combat does take more than just a spam every skill strategy thankfully, still fights can go on for awhile if you cant get your opponent off balance. =/
Some people might not like it, but I didnt mind.
Slow combat!
Finally
As I see new trend in MMOs is fast actionlike combat , which makes no sense to me - as RPG gamer i am interested in tactics over action.
So slower combat with much more focus on tactics - sounds like dream to me
And as for avatar combat - I am glad to hear its good !
Yes finnaly they stop this wow action playing shit, i hate that fast combat where you just hitting 1 key and special move key 3 without any thourths, im looking forward to the final open beta Slow paced thinking mmo´s ftw!
It is hard to tell if a man is telling the truth when you know you would lie if you were in his place
I suspect that you'll find that once you know what you're doing, are in a ship you're familiar with, and have a broad selection of skills, ship combat isn't really slow at all. In fact, I usually don't have enough time to play as optimally as I could. In recent PvP testing we were doing in the office, I was playing a level 50 naval officer, and swapping my skills around to wring a little bit more damage out of each broadside was almost more than I could keep up with. And that's just the easy-to-use skills; there were easily a half-dozen skills that I should have been using, but couldn't keep up with.
Which is not to say that ship battles don't take a while; they do. Against a smart, skilled PvP opponent, in high-end ships, and evenly matched, you'll probably be fighting for 30 minutes (at least). And major fleet actions like port battles could take more than an hour.
Thankfully it sounds like they got naval warfare correct then and got away from the 'fast' combat systems, you can't really compare this to some of the other PvP games since trying to sink a several ton solid warship with cannonballs is much different than some huge guy with an axe chasing some guy in a dress around.
All I've heard is good things about this one and since I've heard about PotBS I've been onboard with this, now if only I could get my Beta invite...............

Agreed, I feel that they're (the mass MMO developers) going the wrong way with combat as well. Tactical combat is great in my opinion, mindless spamming the "Win" skills is not.
The game sounds awsome and i am really looking forward to it, Just the economy side of it sounds very interresting. Slow paced ship combat ! bring it! Beta´s kinda ruin things for me when release comes, i know you guys proberly will do a better job testing it anyway, I´ll wait for the full package on release day
I saw it at Comic Con too, but I was underwhelmed.
The animations are kind of dull, and the world has an extremely sterile feel to it, especially for what should be a rough-edged pirate-y experience. I will admit that atmosphere is subjective, and hard to achieve in any case, but what I saw really did not do it for me.
I didn't actually play, so I won't comment on gameplay itself, but the graphics, interface, and animations did not make me want to explore further. If you are really into pirates, I'm sure you'll be happy with PotBS, but if you're not, I don't think this game will draw you in.
This is not a troll post or a flame of anyone, just my honest opinion based on what I saw.
One thing though.
RELEASE IT ALREADY!
That's all.
Wish Darkfall would release.

Agreed. will be a nice change with hopefully some real tactics... at least much better then the fastforward phoney utter rubbish that is SWG combat
May as well change title to lets breach the NDA thread apart from the OP.
I like that its slow combat always a good thing. Not everyone finds 1 shot kills fun.
Well the only one who you could say breached the NDA even remotely would be Isildur, and if you notice, he's the lead designer of the game. So I think we can let him slide.
On topic, I too like the sound of a slower paced combat. In most of the games I've played that have PvP, one of the biggest complaints I usually hear from the PvP'ers is that battles are over too quick and really take no thought or strategy. All in all, I've got high hopes for this game.
Someone please let me in the beta!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait for this game...honestly.
my family is anticipating it.
Was there any crew interaction with the ship itself while under-way? such as repairing or the like? I dont know how anything works...if you have your ship running out of ammo...can a schooner, or another vessel, come alongside and refill you out of enemy sight on opposite side of your ship?
is it possible to ram the other ship with a crappy ship to bait someone into a fight..and then flank them with another?
is it wide open ocean fighting...or is it when you approach another vessel you both come down to tactical speed(s) and enter a bubble(instanced)??

your crew goes about their duties, they climb the riggings and swab decks and things. not sure on the rest of it, except the last bit. when not in combat you're in the "open sea" which is a scaled down version of the Caribbean. When you attack someone ( or are attacked) you enter a high detail instance for the battle. When you board someone's ship during combat, it creates a second instance that takes place on the deck of the ship you boarded.
nice...

Hmmm...but what happens if I am attacked and I want one of my friends to assist me?...can they come along in 5 minutes and join in? since its instanced?
Also does that mean that I wont see ships fighting unless I'm part of the fight initially?......or can I wait till a fight is underway then plow in and start attacking both of the ships when they start to become damaged and weaker?
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Depends on the situation. in PvE, you can send up a flare asking for help, which opens the instance to others. In PvP, anyone on either of the initial two sides can join for a minute after the battle. I think members of your group can always join you. But you can't "lurk and gank" because you can't see into a battle unless you're in the instance, and then they can see you. You also can't end up with three sided battles at the moment. Only the initial two factions can join later.Rick Saada - FLS Dev & EPFBM

In my opinion here is the difference between PvP and RvR. In the heat of the battle suddenly realm A makes a pact with B to fight the superior realm C.
Would be nice, if something like this is implemented in game.
While interesting, it could break the gameplay mechanics quite substantially as all it would take is a pact between a couple large guilds to substantially alter server-wide mechanics so it is understandable why it isn't in the game.

It all sounds great, but I have never liked instances, they make the worlds seem empty, and if theres a battle going on next to you. But I still can't wait for the game.
I thought it would only be as instanced as Voyage Century, but its actually way more instanced than that. It's just a boring instanced mission grind, with nothing much to look forward to, aside from the PvP, which probably won't even be a big deal. I'm sorry to say, this game will disappoint lots of people. I predict a major flop, that is, if they ever manage to get it off the ground
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I don't know how people keep coming up with these ideas that the instances are bad or good as the game hasn't even been published yet. Instancing really only affects player to player interaction and the performance of the game. Can the game just run in an instance mode all the time? I suppose so, but the hardware is probably what makes it difficult. In order to sustain hundreds or even thousands of users in a single world would cause them to have to cut down the graphics and game mechanics. The polygons on the ships, for instance.
On the other hand, you have the player interaction. Without know what it will be like to ACTUALLY play the game with hundreds or thousands of people, how do you know it will be boring? The fact that the battles are instanced adds to the realism of the game since it has been noted that pvp battles can be quite long. You simply are not going to have ships traveling by in the much faster world map and be able to participate in your battle (exceptions here would likely be if you are grouped with them or within a certain distance when the fighting starts).
This isn't WoW or some other fantasy game where people can just duke it out in the middle of nowhere and possibly receive help from a friendly player walking along.
As to instancing all the time? This isn't like eve where you simply "jump" from one gate to the next. There is no warp. There aren't any afterburners.... The fact that the Caribbean in the world map can be transversed in 30 minutes doesn't really mean that it would be that simple. If you go onto the POTBS website and look in the devlogs under port contention, there is a map showing you how big the contention spaces are. Considering there will be up to 12 points of contention across the map, it's possible you won't be able to make a straight shot from one part of the Caribbean to another and avoid battle. Having Key West in contention supposedly make the entire Straits of Florida a PVP zone, blocking off easy access through there and forcing people to have to go all the way around Cuba (easily adding 20 minutes onto your navigation if you are planning on going from the Bahamas to Havana).
Go to the burningsea.com website and look under Developer Logs, then look at "PVP and Conquest Systems" for more information.
Finally, is it going to be like Guild Wars? Isolated instances between travel? No. I think that POTBS is aiming for a happy medium. I really think open beta is going to answer most of the questions that keep coming up and until then, focusing on something that you haven't experienced in the way it is meant to be experienced is fairly pointless, even if you played the demo at some Con.
Hundreds of thousands? Don't think so...
